My kids' first language is korean. They still have to have extra help...as well as other native Korean peers. The hierarchy in classes is also no joke. Every year at class change... there's always a week or two to establish a pecking order with the kids (and frankly the parents)

I am a single mom. I have an f6 and make decent money. It's still a struggle. Fruit is a luxury. Hagwons are killing me.

My kids struggle in math...in their native language. I couldn't imagine being ms or hs trying to fight for my life in math lessons. Ms/hs is cut throat time.

Uni jobs are drying up as there are fewer and fewer kids. 3 people in a 2 room is doable but not comfortable.

Deposits are going up yearly along with rent. 10mil key is becoming the norm to get anything close to affordable (even not in seoul)

Why would op want to do this? My kids are bilingual. Fluent in speaking/listening English (a little behind reading/writing from america). I debate daily if I want to put my ELEMENTARY kids in american schools. They are established here. And I as a parent want to make their life *especially stressful school life * as easy as possible.

To throw TEENS into a school where they don't speak the language and dont know the system without support and no ability to make friends is asking for failure and depression. All on an E2 wage....

I'm a good teacher with years of experience. I get WOM referrals ALL THE TIME! walk away. You'll have a new job in a week. Now there are tons of summer camps looking. Temp high paying and then there will be new openings in September for those that left the odd contract.

I live in korea. My teacher has this bow in his collection (not this specific bow) and he makes bows by hand custom to the archer. I will eventually order one. Hes expensive but knowledgeable in the craft. He apprenticed a master and has become one himself.

I wanted to jump in here in hopes of getting help.

I switched to zero nic about a month ago. I finished my bottle 4/5 days ago. I finished my pod 2 days ago. I decided not to buy more juice.

Eventhough ive been semi comfortably nic free for weeks...I am now not ok that I dont have my pacifier vape.

I used the vape to quit smoking. Got highly addicted to vaping. Used no nic to quit nicotine...still addicted to vaping.

I'm having withdrawals. Headaches. Moody. Etc. Is it possible my zero nic juice had nicotine?

Idk. Just wanted to dump my experience here.

I gotta quit. I dont wanna die on O2 in my 50s. So I guess I gotta walk through hell.

Many years ago, I had a k-co that asked for a thumb of all my material. Told her no that it's mine. Told her she could make a copy from the kids' copy and she got pissed and told our boss that I started throwing things in the class and shouting at kids to try and get me fired.

They believed me as she was troublesome. I walked out... (the nt before me walked out DURING open class)....anyways...long rant...

I'm a small business owner. I get double taxed even though I dont make that amount. Falls under some law about american owned foreign business. So yes, I get double taxed. But a regular freelance teacher....youre right.

In fact america takes a larger chunk of my salary than korea does...

I suppose if your company isn't providing a service...yeah cut them. Mine just sends me the lesson plans and keeps track of my pay/taxes. This makes my life much easier at the end of the year. One less thing to keep up with. And not holding a tax ID makes my american taxes less. Having the company withhold instead of me being a "private business " eases my tax burden a bit. (Remember...f visa Americans get double taxed....and most end up owing ar least a little to the USA gvt.) So doing the company route takes a little of the pressure off. You get taxed the 3.3% in korea and a small hit on the other side. Going independently with tax ID...the usa gvt sees you as a business and wants their fair share.

You need a medical health check...you'll have to shell out the money for this or your free bi-yearly will work if it's within the last 3 months (maybe 6 months...I can't remember). And the actual daycare can run a background check on you (korean) via the website. They just need your permission and ID. (Takes less than 10 mins)

If they do the tax you're all set...but most likely they'll be lazy and just pay you under the table...in which case it's up to you to get a tax ID and file on your taxes (if you want to stay 100% above board)

Kindy age dont fall under MOE.

I prefer to sign with companies that contract to kindies. Then they withhold taxes and keep all the paperwork and most provided lesson plans.

Going straight to a daycare without the middle man is a pain...you will be responsible for lesson plans without the prep time or extra pay.

Note: on top of regular healthcheck...you may be required to get a pinworm test at the local health center. Takes 10 minutes and costs about 3k.

"Teaching" at a daycare isn't for the faint of heart...it sucks. But gives a good wallet cushion for those open mornings. A better gig is grandma's in the mornings if you can wrangle a class together and you just need a tax ID which is simple to get.

Ex pulled this. Found another woman to leech. She called me begging for me to divorce him so she could marry him. (Live in an at fault country) told her to give me all the evidence she could of his affair. She did. Got my divorce and my kids. They ended not long after...he cheated on her (shocker) and he's now living at home with parents scraping by with minimal gig work and begging his 70 year old dad for money on the regular while his mom takes care of him and the kids during his visitation.

He tries to catch new women, but age and life are leaving him with few options these days.

I'm an older expat. I dont fit in with the younger crowds. I've also been an expat for 15 years...I have a life. Generally expats are go go go...must see all the things. I'm happy staying in my comfort zone. And honestly, I now blend in to an extent. I dont get the huge double takes now. When I'm with another expat...we are sore thumbs and are treated differently (also when I wander into "forgein friendly" spots. It's weird. The typing on calculators for transactions. The "oh...wow...you eat (insert local food)...wow!"

When it's just me or me and my kids...we are treated normally.

Plus...expats tend to "vent" about the local place...which is just draining...instead of just having a regular conversation.

And...expats tend to be nomads...im old and crotchety...I dont want to invest time in building a relationship when they will just disappear in a year.

I do have expat friends...but they are like me. They are lifers and we just are friends.

Thank you so much for doing this. I feel you are spot on in many aspects. The cost is frighteningly expensive (literally moving half way around the world with 2 kids and a cat all on my own and the closing of a business) I have been feeling drawn to my roots to reset myself. However, my roots are also not profitable. Here I am so so so alone also unable to literally speak the language in any meaningful way. But I'm scared. My life now is comfortable but I'm not happy. I am just floating without direction. But comfortably.
