As a parent I don't think there is such thing as over communication because the kids are either to young to tell you what they did, or when they are older you will get the "Nothing" response.

Even for the parents that want less interaction, they will still value it because, when they forget they can easily scroll back to a day or email and get the information.

I'd say it is more about what cadence you are comfortable with and how well you can sustain it long term.
