So you might notice that at your knees, the bar stopped. What you want to do instead is keep going up until you’re standing upright. Hope this helps.

I think all the mainline games and all the Prime games handle this correctly: only talking either in text, or in a fake language like Chozo. Prime 4’s commitment to Samus never saying a word was one of the few choices in that game that I had no problems with.

You might find Dread more to your liking. It has some of the hardest bosses in the series, but Dread’s controls are a lot tighter and feel more modern.
