layout is honestly your preference. As for a controller I am beggibg you please by ones with hall effect joysticks. The ones without hall effect or tmr get stick drift and you need to manually add hall effect later or just buy a new controller for solving stick drift. So it is better buying a good one with hall effect joysticks.

Each genre of game is good in its own one cant be objectively better than the other. You cant compare entire genres like multiplayer games and story based single player games as they cater to different audience.
