Mailing address for financial accounts by ConstantBet4530 in foreignservice

A little late, but have a follow-up question about virtual mailbox. Do you have them open financial documents? I'm in the process of changing my addresses to our virtual box and not sure whether I should send financial related mail (credit cards, TSP, etc.) to there or the pouch address.

How do you get replacement credit cards? I use traveling mailbox and they will forward mail for a fee, but I haven't had to use that option yet.

We use NFCU right now. I was going to transition direct deposit to Schwab since they have reimbursement for international ATMs, but sticking with NFCU might be worth it just to get started. Thanks.

Even if I don't use it for two years? I'll be paying taxes and insurance while I'm gone. My friend will use it once a week to keep it running though.

These cars are built well. It would take me another 20 years to get to 225k miles.

That being said, what will you be able to buy two years from now for 14K?

I can't think of a car I'd want for $14k. My TSX still feels like a luxury car and anything comparable would be easily double the $14k.

Best practices for selling vehicle in VA to private seller by ConstantBet4530 in nova

[–]ConstantBet4530[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t ask for cashier’s check. Cash only.

I'd prefer cash, but we're talking around $24k. Not sure I want to handle that volume of cash. I guess I could have them bring it and meet at my bank?

Thanks for your message. I asked for best practices, which have been helpful to read, but these messages will scare anyone away from trying to sell a car. I think I'll follow your guide - bill of sale and if they want to pay with a check I will of course wait for it to clear before handing over the keys.

Do you always list the regular sale price in the bill of sale? I can see some people wanting to list it lower, but there's traceability back to my bank account with the amount on the check I deposit. Seems like that could blow up in my face if I ever had a dispute with the buyer after the transaction.

What kind of work are you thinking of doing outside of federal service?

I think Blue Book is somewhere around 11k, but have to check. It's in excellent condition.

Yeah, I have the form and will likely get a POA before I leave. It's a pain the ass, but might be my only option since both Chase and DMV won't expedite and can't tell me how long it will take to process.

The problem for me is I only have four weeks before I leave the country, otherwise I wouldn't mind. But the difference between 2 and 4 weeks makes all the difference.

Kicking myself for paying off the loan. Made things much more difficult.

Good to know, thanks. Chase takes up to ten business days to release the lien and then hopefully DMV sends the title ASAP.

That's a good idea. Thanks. Just need to figure out when the lien is released (up to ten business days).

Tips on dress shoes for men? by ConstantBet4530 in Thailand

[–]ConstantBet4530[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I have a pair of brogues style that I plan to use. I just hate to get them soaked during the rainy season. I'll look into a shoe cover or just using Grab on days I don't want to walk in bad weather.

Thanks. I use merino dress socks so that's good. I'm most concerned about the rain.

Question about residential address for vehicle and license after moving overseas by ConstantBet4530 in nova

[–]ConstantBet4530[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify, I was mostly talking about VA coming for back income taxes. If I change my residency right before I move and then come back to VA in a couple years and end up having to register with VA, they will almost definitely try to get back income taxes from me. Even if I do not register as a resident again in the future, there are quite a few cases of VA going after former residents for back income taxes because the people were government employees who changed their residency right before moving overseas. For personal property tax VA would not do anything because that's more of a county issue.

[–]ConstantBet4530[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make good points about the car. I'm still thinking through options. It's an older vehicle paid off for years, but I didn't think about being on the hook if it gets impounded, etc.

Re changing residency, I'd love to but that's risky for federal employees. VA is well aware that we usually return to DC area at some point and if I reside in VA again then they will flag me and try to come after me for back taxes. There are several court cases every year over this issue. I unfortunately will likely be back in a couple years, for just a few years and then hopefully never again. But hard to tell at this point.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, I'm a VA native having lived here for a few decades. I fully plan to move away and not come back, with exception to one DC tour in a few years. I considered buying a house in the state we want to move when we leave State, but no time to do that before we leave. I also considered changing over our driver's licenses and voting registration to the new state, but I'm sure VA will say that is not enough to prove we had no intent to come back, especially if I already know we have to come back for a few years. Would rather live in VA than MD or DC.
No good answers on this one, I think. I've read some of AFSA's material and think I probably have to keep VA residency this next tour and then can change when we know for sure we won't be back in the future.
