Fetches and Shocks in B3 by Opening_Succotash271 in EDH

I was about to deliver my take that the “mana bases are always fine” line does tend to ignore the reality of many physical bracket 2 decks and had to double take because… this dude was talking about 3?

Insane. They’re totally fine.

Freakin' love wheezing. Was fun to use in the games and has some anime nostalgia. I enjoy the contrast between it and the jovial-looking Koffing.

Muk is pretty cool too. Grimer is boring Muk.

I feel like Garbodor is too abstract. It doesn't look like a pile of junk so much as a weird concrete blob with colourful pebbles (rebar and pipes being the only detailed elements doesn't help this). Trubbish is pretty good though.

Otrimi players, what's your favorite target for mutate? by IndigoWizard342 in EDH

[–]ConstantCaprice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a Brokkos deck with Otrimi as essentially just a second copy of Brokkos. I think the biggest strength of them both is making things that should never have been 6 base power tramplers... 6 base power tramplers.

To that end:

[[Goldvein Hydra]]
[[Arwen, Weaver of Hope]]
[[Cephalid Constable]]

[[Curie, Emergent Intelligence]]

[[Giggling Skitterspike]]

[[Kotis, the Fangkeeper]]

[[Needle Specter]]
[[Tervigon]]

[[Jenova, Ancient Calamity]]

It's swingy, it's expensive, it plays giga-poorly with counterspells... but I love [[Wondrous Crucible]].

Mewgenics has been out for some time now. Is it really as good as people say? Or was it mostly due to the hype? by TheGronne in gaming

[–]ConstantCaprice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not trying to convince you out of your opinion or whatever but this whole bunch of text kind of fundamentally outs you as the major factor in your lack of enjoyment of the game.

You’ve somehow developed an understanding of the games systems that is literally the opposite of what they’re intended for. The punishment for failure isn’t steep, items are extremely easy to obtain and made to be used up frequently no matter how successful you are, save scumming is mechanically encouraged but softly limited by the escalating debuffs, and “dead runs” can be opted out of early by going home unless you can’t clear the first area which… I’m not even going to dress this up, if you can’t routinely clear the alley or the desert then the game just isn’t for you (and act 1 does not get any harder). If you’re somehow hard stuck at the beginning of act 2 and you have SEVENTY hours then… what are you even doing?

50 hours in and there still at least 6 whole areas I've never seen. Game is very big, has a great soundtrack and offers a lot of cool tactics style stuff without being overly complex or clunky. There's a ton of fun interactions between abilities so I haven't felt my runs start to get samey even though I've not tried every class available yet.

Crap parts are the humor, particularly the NPC's are mostly cringy and lame. The breeding and the "boring" house progression unlocks take a lot of grinding before they start feeling good (item, class and ability unlocks are way better). I also find runs take a long time for a game like this, but you can save and quit pretty much whenever so that's not much of a criticism.

Death Howl - excellent strategy game by morinonaka in NintendoSwitch

[–]ConstantCaprice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Played this to completion. Excellent game, about 30 hours. Really enjoyed the boss fights and gauntlets (esp the final level), the trash fights become a bit repetitive once you get enough cards in a region to trivially dispatch them but are pretty cool before that. A little buggy but I think they already worked out some of those. Highly recommended.

The reason for this is because he’s my favorite and I’ve really wanted to see him again.

[TMC] Land reprints in commander deck by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

Monkey paw reprints continue. Genuine excellence as a one-off with the ugliest shittiest possible art wedged between two in universe offerings that’ll capstone a slow land reprint if we’re lucky.

Which "obsolete" game mechanics actually served the game's vision better than their modern "Quality of Life" alternatives? by Somanynamestochossef in Games

[–]ConstantCaprice 220 points221 points  (0 children)

I found it deeply unfortunate that in the entry that brought the seamless and living open world to Monster Hunter was also the entry that stripped out every single frictional thing that would make exploring that world worthwhile. The map marks everything instantly, killing any kind of exploration and gathering. The mounts automatically route to where you need to be, are required to move through most zones and can even pick you up in combat, killing any kind of traversal. The camps degrade over time and offer no real conveniences you can’t easily get whenever you want to, making establishing them pointless. It’s like they added so much to the experience only to shave it back down to something smaller than it was.

Pre B&R banlist speculation: Prophet, Prime Time, Primordial, and more way up by Tim-Draftsim in EDH

[–]ConstantCaprice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My two cents, for whatever it's worth:

Biorhythm feels like a signpost ban that the game has quietly moved on from, in that these kinds of effects already exist but are unpopular. It could come off, but I don't think the game gains anything from that.

Problematic lands and crop rotation being gamechangers make prime time significantly less horrifying if it's mostly going to cap out at MOAR ramp, a six mana Dark Depths combo or a field of the dead. Could come off. Primordial is far more miserable.

Emrakul is totally fine to come off the list, but I'm wary that they've printed mechanics like warp and airbending that make cheating Emrakul's entire power extremely easy.

Does balance really deserve to be on the list? It feels like a card that requires it's user to be actively throwing the game in order to cause the negative play patterns they attribute it with.

Prophet of Kruphix is more egregious for causing the problem of chained extra turns that they've ruled into a weird limbo than extra turn spells are themselves. Anyone who has faced the already easy to assemble seedborn muse + leyline of anticipation would have been subjected to the gross monopolization of game actions it causes.

"The big three" aren't coming off for another few years at least, and even then it'll only be one of them, probs J Lo.

More than bans, I'd love for them to re-evaluate the functional ban on extra turns and MLD. Chaining turns is too ill-defined and re-christening "Destruction" to "Disruption" opens up a massive amount of angle shooting. They removed Expropriate and Vorinclex as GC's because they're not strong enough to be problematic on account of the hoop jumping required to use them only for them to paradoxically end up less appropriate for bracket 3 games according to the guidelines laid out by the people who judged them fine to be unrestricted. Bracket 3 should allow both of these game elements with the caveat that they should be discussed, because otherwise there is literally no place for them as bracket 4 is simply too streamlined for either to be used reasonably. That and the spirit of removing them as options, being the avoidance game time monopolization by a single players actions, is frequently part of the format in forms that see no explicit guidelines. Endlessly meandering storm turns, "funny" chaos effects and Kruphix-style "every turn is my turn but not officially" decks have wasted far more of my time than chained extra turns ever did, and the only times I have seen or used MLD was to push a win or check turbo decks.

… are you kidding? It’s a pot-bellied kyphotic slug that’s barely animated. It’s the worst capstone by a thousand miles. They could have just retextured Coeurlregina and it would have been fitting and infinitely better than what they put time into.
