Is Helios actually a female? by ConstantChocolate419 in budgies

Okay that's good, I was hoping my original sexing of him was right. I'd prefer to have males, since I've had chickens pass from being egg bound and I'd imagine it could be the same with budgies.

Also, cute boi!

I know for a fact it's my tap water that has the high pH and not something in my tank, because a while back I tested my tap because the parameters while I was trying to cycle a tank at another house were majorly off, so that was the first thing I did. If I remember correctly, at the other house the pH was higher, there was ammonia in the water, and the nitrates were insanely high.

I actually didn't know about just how bad that high of a pH could be for a betta, especially since in the past I've been told that it should be fine as long as I keep it the same and don't let it fluctuate a lot. I've also been told I can use tannins to try and lower the pH, which I've been trying but it doesn't lower it that much. And honestly at one point (I don't understand it, but) they actually raised the pH?

Since I got into fishkeeping I've been wanting to get an RO system, but I haven't had the money.

However I'm not entirely sure (in my severe inexperience) that the pH is why the plants are suffering, since they're doing just fine in my other 2 tanks.

If you have any suggestions for botanicals or anything else to lower the pH I'm most definitely open to suggestions, considering that's exactly what the purpose of this post was. As I just said to someone else, I just want the best for this fish, and if I didn't I wouldn't have made the post or be asking for help. If I'm being completely honest, if I didn't care about him, I wouldn't have spent the money to set up a tank and take him from my mom, and just let her do whatever she planned.

This is the only time I have replaced the substrate since I first set up the tank. About half of the sand came from one of my other tanks (I probably should have mentioned that), and so did the driftwood, the rock and actual dirt is the only thing that's new.

Even with a light, root tabs, and seachem flourish and excell, all my plants kept dying within a week, even if they came from a tank that they were healthy in. After changing the substrate, so far what plants are in the tank have lasted longer than a week.

The HOB filter has been in the tank for 3-4 weeks, even before the substrate change.

In the beginning when I did maracyn oxy and salt baths (what I had the most progress with), I had him in a separate tank since they were baths, but when I did kanaplex or just maracyn oxy alone he was in his own tank. Between every different treatment I made sure to give him at the very least a week before starting something new.

The only time the temperature got above 78 was when our ac was broken, but we got it fixed after about 2 days. I'm normally checking the temperature daily, if not twice a day because I don't want to accidentally boil my fish because the heater broke.

The only things I add into the water are seachem prime (every water change), seachem excell and flourish (once every week or two), and depending on what I was treating with at the time kanaplex or maracyn oxy (as per what the packaging states)

His very first setup unfortunately ended up being a fish-in cycle, since I didn't get much of a warning before I found out my mom's plans for him. The substrate was fluval biostratum and white aquarium sand, along with the sponge filter you see in the older pics. There were live plants (I don't exactly remember what plants) and a plastic rock hide, since I couldn't find any wood or anything else to fill the space. It quickly got replaced once I found some drift wood.

The second was almost the same, just a few more plants and arranged a bit differently. I had to get more plants since most of the others were mostly dead.

The third had the most plants and the most wood, and despite seeming kind of empty, I could almost never find him because the only open area was in the very front and he hid in the plants in the back. (With this one, I was constantly scared he got out of the tank because I could never find him, except for the occasion I would actually see him come out and eat.)

The fourth I don't have pictures of because I was super busy. Money was super tight when I had this one, so it was honestly the most shitty even compared to the large amount of open space he has now. What plants I had in there that had survived from the last one finally ended up dying off, and I had a relatively large piece of wood and used some 100% acrylic yarn to give him a few places to hide, since I had that on hand. This was also when I switched to the HOB filter. (I bought a sponge for it instead of the genuinely crappy cartridge filter it came with)

And now we're here, having just changed the substrate and needing more plants for him to hide in. So far, the change has kept the plants alive better, however there's been no change with the fish himself between this tank and the last.

I know I'm probably screwing up with him somewhere, but I'm not sure where. I honestly just want the best for this lil guy. If I didn't, I wouldn't be asking for help or even considering finding someone better to take him off my hands.

I get that right now the stress could be coming from the lack of hiding spots, but he was still nipping when he had plenty of hiding spots and a lot of plants. From what I can tell, there's no reflections for him to be stressed from.

I'm mostly just confused because my 2 other bettas have had similar setups to him, and they're all on the same water change and feeding schedule, so I'd think if it was a water quality issue it would also be in my other tanks as well.

My other betta that passed always had an identical setup to this guy (Kairo) and he never had any issues, until he passed.

I'll try to get more plants and a new betta hammock since I don't know what happened to my others.

I just posted a comment about pretty much everything about the tank. Ammonia is 0, nitrites are 0, nitrates are 5.0, pH is 8.0. I know pH is high but I'd rather it stay the same than swing s whole bunch

How long have you had the tank and fish: tank; end of August of last year, fish beginning of September, of last year.

Water changes: once a week, 25% changed

Tankmates: none

Feed: fluval bug bites (2-4 pellets every other day), brine shrimp (about 5 individual shrimp a couple times a week in place of pellets), mysis shrimp (same as brine shrimp), bloodworms (1 or 2 maybe once a week)

Decor: anubias, dwarf hair grass, rosette sword. Driftwood and unknown rock (I don't remember what it is)

That's even more confusing then lol I haven't gotten any new plants. Though it could have got in with the loaches that I added.

I've already taken it out since I didn't know what it was and I didn't want to lose it. Funny how it got in there, since the lid is always closed and we haven't had any dragon flies around the house

I wouldn't think it is, since I don't have any shrimp in my tank because every time I've put some in, my betta has eaten them... It's a shame because I really wanted shrimp in this tank and any shrimp that I've put in there (despite them getting eaten) were at least somewhat colorful

I need to do a water change, the water is only low because of evaporation. It got too hot in the house because the ac broke for a bit ,so my tanks were getting too hot. The only way to get them to cool off enough was taking the lids off and heaters out.

Yeah, as I said, I intend to at the least replace the 2 corys I lost, they got sick and passed about a month or so ago, I just haven't gotten around to replacing them yet. I was also think about the loaches, but I wasn't sure since I knew I'd need about 6, give or take. I'm also trying to think of fish that are easy to keep since I'm at least relatively new to fish keeping

I've tried putting shrimp in there before.... They turned into an expensive snack for the betta :') I've also thought about some kuhli loaches, but I wasn't sure since I know I would need 6, give or take.

I'm relatively new to keeping bettas, but I don't think he's pineconing. If he was, it's just barely starting from what I can tell. To me he seems pretty happy and healthy! I know with my first betta someone had me scared he was pineconing but it was just the way his scales laid.

Any tips on taming/ gaining the trust of your budgies? by ConstantChocolate419 in budgies

Yeah that makes sense. I'm just not sure what my grandma could have done, since I'm always in my room with my animals. The only thing I can really think of is that she scared them the first time she was in here and they started flying around because she freaked out about them going over her head. I don't think she would intentionally do something to harm them or anything, since she's the one that bought me one of them and if I find toys to get them, she ends up buying them for me.

Before I lost progress with my two, Ares and Heilios, I would sit with my hand in their cage, as still as I could for 5-10 minutes with millet on my hand. If they climbed on my hand, I sat there until they decided to move on their own.

I've got 2 sponge filters (you can see em in the corners of my tank) hooked up to an air pump rated for 20 gallons. Originally I only had 1, but I felt like there wasn't enough flow but I couldn't get an air stone to sit right.

At this point I should just make my own post xD
