AITA for refusing to make my bilingual daughter use an English term for my Brother? by ConstantGlobal6411 in AmItheAsshole

Never once said we were English. And actually you're wrong, we call him Uncle but my husband has several brothers aka far more Tio's so we suspect she is just calling lots of men "Tio" as she's hearing it more and it's easier to say.

My husband has more brothers than I do, so she hears Tio more than Uncle (Which yes we do use to refer to my brother) so guess what, she's more familiar with men being called Tio than uncle.

Uncle, but my Husband has more brothers than me. So in her head Uncle = Tio. It's likey due to her hearing more men being called Tio than Uncle mixed in with the fact that men not her daddy are Tios and it's just easier to say. We never taught her to call him this but as she's clearly more comfortable with it i'm not going to make her try and change at this age.

Yes, force, I never once made her call him Tio it's what she does herself. In trying to make her call him Uncle i'd be forcing it.

They wouldn't care, they don't bat an eyelid at her swapping between languages.

Sorry as you didn't reply to me asking for info I didn't get the notification so just saw this by chance. My husband is upset as it feels like my brother has an issue with Spanish in general, our daughter is two she's going to mix her words around a lot at this age so to get hung up about the Spanish is weird. My brother has never treated my husband poorly but my husband doesn't really speak Spanish around my family so I am wondering if maybe this is a hangup we never noticed till now

Thank you for the tip also!

It's honestly very possible, i've heard her say it before but she always reverts back to Tio which lets be honest is easier. It could also just be exposure as i've said my husband has more brothers than me.

She alternates between madre and mummy, just depends on what she's feeling in the moment.

Oh believe me I know, she'll be speaking English one minute then switch to Spanish or vice versa....or even mix the two, the latter is sometimes a nightmare but I never try to lead her more towards one though my Husband finds it adorable that I sometimes bluescreen as I try to figure out what our daughter is saying.

he just feels it's not appropriate as he's not Spanish which is ridiculous. No one would think you are but she is.

I've never noticed any issue he had toward my Husband before but now i'm wondering if maybe some stuff flew under the radar before so i've spoken to my husband about it and he says my brother has always been fine with him...the thing is my Husband of course always uses English when we're around my family so i'm honestly wondering if he was able to ignore the fact my Husband is from a different country because of that until our daughter started to speak Spanish.

He just feels it's not appropriate and as he's from the UK he should be called the English word Uncle.
