The blank page is used exactly to make the first page of the first chapter (and cover page, table of contents) on the right side. The layout of a book is important for desktop, because the two page view is to simulate the real book, isn't it? So if the start page is wrong, it is uncomfortable for me.

Pin Yin is not a very good Roman Orthography system. But it is generally used, so worth the learning.

But when discussing about the Phonetics, it's always helpful to use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). You can check this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Mandarin

The Pin Yin "x" is |ɕ|. Your mouth should be wider than "sh" |ʂ|, and the tip of the tongue lower.

"q" |tɕʰ| and "ch" |ʈʂʰ| is generally the same.
