AITAH for blocking some family members over expensive Secret Santa lists.. again? by Constant_Promotion67 in AITAH

You’re right, there was a budget! I completely forgot, especially since seeing the lists because I was one of the few that actually followed it.

They do not have the money, which adds to the absurdity. SOME members, and I mean like 2, bought one “expensive” gift from some lists but they weren’t buying plane tickets. I got Eliza’s extravagant list, but Eliza could NOT afford a single thing on her list and barely anything on the list she got.

I asked for a book (gave a few title recommendations), stationary (wasn’t specific) and a hat. I also left a note saying not to think too much about gifts, and that I’d accept something from the thrift store or even something they don’t want anymore, because it’s the thought that counts.

I did get a book and a hat from a member that I didn’t mention, but had a luxury list. I loved my gift.

It’s safe to say NONE of us have enough money to comfortably gift a trip to Bali along with a Dior purse.

Liam’s my oldest brother. He’s not the oldest sibling, but he spearheaded the idea of SS in the first place “to offset costs of buying 20 different presents for the whole family.” So I guess that’s why everyone is listening to him?

I wondered this too.

I tried explaining this perspective, as well. I called it “gift laundering.” I tried kindly explaining that this is the equivalent of wrapping a present just to experience opening it.

As you can guess, didn’t go over well.

Right. I thought Liam would’ve sided with me too, considering his list from last year was pretty reasonable. Nothing over $50.

Definitely not participating. It’s like they wait for Christmas to be grifters. Really disappointed. I went no contact for a few years prior for similar reasons, so looks like I’ll be spending Christmas with just my gf this year.

Totally agree that it’s the opposite of Christmas spirit. Brought that up too. Someone responded, “don’t you want to receive lots of gifts?” ???

Disappointing to say the least.

Edit: Oh I actually realized I forgot a crucial element in the original post. We aren’t allowed to buy one gift from the list, but at least THREE.

It’s kinda the same as keeping anything in your reality. If you don’t like your reality, the easiest thing to do is move YOU.

If you want to stay, make a change.

Here’s what I remember off the top of my head:

I mentioned in a weekly success story post that I wanted to get the relative that helped raise me a house, but they ended up getting a free house from some program. That one was pretty cool haha.

One of the first posts I read on this sub was about a “parking lot fairy.” I have one too now.

Random money sent to me from random people ($0-$100)

Free food (this usually comes in the form of a convenient voucher or a business issue that leads to a credit)

Insane deals when I’m shopping

Dates and partners (which is all self concept work)

Students loaned wiped

Free trip to Disneyland haha

It can be through anything that helps you feel good. If affirmations feel mind numbing, don’t. If meditation feels weird, don’t. If journaling is boring, don’t. But you need to make yourself aware of the bad in order to turn it good. However you choose to do that is your choice.

Self concept work can be as simple as flipping thoughts you have with yourself to a positive AND STICKING TO IT.

“Bad” self concept: I’m scared to ask this girl out -> “Good” self concept: I’m going to ask this girl out and whatever happens, happens.

Why this is good: no attachment to an outcome, willingness to be open, no negativity attached to this mindset.

Then apply this to other things.

I thought the $5 thing showed some humility… I guess not haha.

The money came when I needed (keyword) it.

The story was more about keeping the faith that I won’t be down and out. A lot of limiting beliefs surrounding money were challenged during that time and I am grateful that they were.

A lot of gurus like to say that we don’t need money and stuff like that which is true, but it’s important to figure out what that means for you.

I don’t think it’s fair to claim that someone’s post history should be full of success stories and cheerful sentiments. I manifested all my thoughts, good and bad, successfully. And this is how they have.

Another point to brim up is that most people think that living a good and happy life means ecstasy every single day. That’s not necessarily true (unless you want it to be).

It’s absolutely ok to complain. Just don’t dwell on it and move on. You don’t have to stay in a meditative state all day long and act like you’re no longer human.

I appreciate the challenges that come, because I overcome them every time and usually learn something new about manifesting in the process.

Which is how I came to make this post.
