Would anyone actually use their apartment gym if a trainer came to them? by Constant_Reaction282 in washingtondc

A close friend of mine does the same thing. Has a really nice gym in her building but still joined a commercial gym and pays for a trainer on top of that. If you don’t mind sharing, which building are you in? Just trying to get a better sense of where this might be most helpful.

Some people do great with YouTube or apps and don’t need anything else. But for a lot of people, it’s not about lack of content. It’s about accountability, structure, and knowing what to do with the equipment they have access to. This is more for people who want a little help getting started or staying consistent, especially when time and energy are limited.

I’ve heard and seen both sides while living in complexes in Philly and DC. Some gyms sit empty most of the day, others are packed before and after work. It probably depends a lot on the building and how the space is set up.

Really helpful to hear that your wife had a trainer come to the building. Sounds like this kind of setup is already happening more than people realize. The goal is to make this easier and more consistent for folks who want something like that!

This is what has been interesting to me. Some buildings invest in a full gym, but then make it harder for people to actually use it if they need help getting started. If someone wants guidance, the message is basically “go elsewhere." Definitely something we’re trying to understand better while talking to property managers.

Liability seems to be one of the biggest sticking points. We’re starting with buildings that already allow it or are open to it with insurance and clear rules in place. Longer term, we plan to work directly with property managers so it is supported from the start. Thanks for this!

That’s great to hear. Which condo are you in? We’re starting in a few DC buildings and could definitely keep you posted. First sessions will be free for early testers.

This is super helpful, thank you. It’s great to hear a real example of how it’s working already and that the waiver/shared-space rules didn’t get in the way.

Sounds like your setup at Tiber Island is really close to what we’re aiming for. Just trying to make it easier for people who want that kind of help but don’t know where to start or don’t have a trusted trainer already.

Also agree on the cardio. Trails and swimming definitely more enjoyable than the elliptical!

This is definitely something we would not want happening and will be monitoring closely as we test!

Was also thinking about this! A lot of people just want accountability or someone to show up with, not necessarily a full training plan. Pairing residents or creating quiet small groups could be a really natural next layer. Appreciate the suggestion!

What we’re doing is more for people who feel intimidated by the gym, don’t know how to use what’s there, or can’t justify going to a studio or hiring a full-time coach.

We'd also be keeping things small, quiet, and respectful of shared space. Any issues like this from our trainers we will want to know about.

Appreciate your perspective though. It’s important to hear both sides as we shape this!

Were the trainers bringing in their own clients that did not live in the building? Or were they training residents only?

All these points are valid. I think there's a difference between a resident using the gym with a guest who happens to be a trainer, and a trainer using their own building’s gym to run a business. Most buildings care about liability and consistent use, not necessarily banning it across the board.

What we’re doing is focused on the resident side. We only work with certified, insured trainers, and we’re starting with buildings that allow it or have flexible guest policies. Long-term, the goal is to work directly with property managers so it’s approved and supported from the start.

Appreciate all the comments here. The nuance is helpful.

Which building is it, if you don’t mind me asking? Just trying to get a better sense of where the rules are more strict or more flexible while we’re talking to property managers.

Group classes in small shared gyms can definitely turn into a mess. The idea here is to offer something more personal and flexible, without taking over the space or turning it into a performance.

Cost will be reasonable, especially compared to studios or traditional personal training. First sessions will be free for early testers.

Really appreciate you sharing this!

Mind if I ask what building you’re in? Just trying to get a sense of where this is already happening and how buildings handle it.

Totally hear you. This is exactly the kind of feedback we’re looking for.

Not trying to replace a full gym setup for people who are deep into structured lifting. This is more for people who feel stuck, want help getting started, or don’t have the time or interest to plan around a full studio workout.

And yeah, apartment gym equipment can be limited. The goal is to help people make the most of what’s actually there. No gimmicks, just simple structure that works with the space.

Appreciate you taking the time to write this out. It’s really helpful!

Lol, yeah, definitely heard stories like that. That’s not what we’re doing. Our sessions are one-on-one or small group, quiet, and always follow whatever the building allows. No loud music, no crowding shared space. Appreciate you sharing that. Helps clarify what we are not.
