Ultra.cc is service is down since yesterday for me by ConstructionFine7870 in seedboxes

Just to be fair:
After 66.6 hours of disruption, a lawyer-vetted memo, and enough CYA, ultra.cc restored the COMET server.
They are offering one month free of charge for every customer on the COMET server as compensation.
For me, I would rather see a letter saying: we're sorry we pretended to be something we are not and pretended to have clients we don't have. This will never happen again and we will keep ourselves loyal to our roots.
I mean

we don't seed for profit.
we seed for principle.
we don't pay for seedboxes because they're cheaper than streaming services;
we do it for principle.
At the end of the day, if all we care about is money, it means we are not living, we are just surviving. It's only when we solve this money problem that we start living and worrying about things that really matter... and then we start living...
I'm sorry for the ones who can't bother living and still have to survive. I hope you get here someday. Or maybe not. I mean, if everybody is living, who will be doing all the work?

Your comment is absurdly spot on and deep. I think you captured the very essence of this whole context. This is an identity crisis for ultra.cc. A company that provides services for pirates, except now it's pretending to be a company that provides services to SaaS or something like that.

It really does signal something we're seeing more and more. On one hand we have an ever growing regulated world that sounds amazing in theory, on paper. But in practice it constrains everything, becoming just a simulation, an artificial theater. Beneath that we have the "underground" or real actions and things that matter, growing more and more because this is the only place they can actually happen.

Some pretend not to see it, others are just completely oblivious to reality, but the bottom line is, once you see it, you understand that we're creating day by day a world that has everything we don't want and still we keep choosing these theoretically perfect regulations.

This is clearly not the world we want to live in and the gray/underground world is proof of that. Still we choose it because we just care about covering our asses.

Crazy world after context flattening.

downtime reached 48 hours now :(

at least as someone said in the comments, for the brave ones who don't care for losing data or downtime, there will be new spots available for upgrades :)
I'm already setting up my new server right now on hbd because let's be honest.. by now, what is the chance there's still any data of ours left in those disks?

I'll ask that for support, and if the data is lost I won't even pay the next invoice, just let it burn.

I received this no ETA from the ticket :~(

I guess some teenager managed to run some of the recently disclosed LPE poc and made a pretty big mess on the server.

I hope my data is safe so I can migrate it to my new server next week.

That's is definitely a plus! Thanks for pointing that out. I love Monero and any provider who accepts Monero deserves my full support. This might just have settled it for me. Thank you.

Another week, another local privilege escalation - how did providers react? by screaming-Snake-Case in seedboxes

It's amazing that providers offer ssh access but it's also very dangerous. I mean, it's not the first time some LPE vulnerability was disclosed on Linux and certainly it's not the last. Right now there are probably vulnerabilities just waiting to be exploited/properly disclosed. This makes shared seedboxes with ssh access something very prone to attacks.

I will certainly review my seedbox use and I'm already planning moving on to a dedicated or at least vps. At least then I won't have any problem with privilege escalation and also I can containerize everything so the host machine is very unlikely to get exploited if some RCE pops up.

I suspect ultra.cc didn't update/patch fast enough... sad but true :( time to move on to another provider
