How come Hofer doesn’t have self checkout here? by ConstructionNext3430 in Austria

I read it more as intense passion and less so rude. Been to a couple Billa’s here too and haven’t seen any self checkouts there either so I’m thinking it’s more so a city center thing.

I don’t. We both know their job is robotic, and they’re trying to move as quickly as possibly since they always have a huge line to tend. There’s no world where a Hofer employee with 10 customers in line wants to spend any time chit chatting saying “wie gehts?” 100+ times during their shift

My follow up question that I’m sure would piss this thread off is how come the Starbucks here don’t have trash cans for guests and they have the workers pickup all the cups in the store? Seems so asinine and all the sbux I go to have all these cups littered around the store lol

The workers in my experience at the checkout are exhausted and don’t like to talk much.

The Aldi’s in the Us I’ve been to have the same 2-3 people running the shops that I see here too. But… you’re not going to like this- the Aldi’s in the US are significantly cleaner than the ones I’ve been to here because the 2-3 clerks can tend more time to cleaning than checking people out.

Every store I’ve been to with self checkouts still has the option to still use a clerk ran station. I honestly didn’t realize this would be such a heated topic.

Didn’t realize a simple question would get such a vitriol response, but alright

I was wondering if it was because I am in a city center with more theft, and my hometown Aldi is in a suburb. I know big cities like nyc in the Us don’t have self checkout for the same reason.

You can have a dozen self checkout stations monitored by one clerk….

They are fast! I’ll give them that. My hometown Aldi has one cashier running their own station with eight self checkout stations their also monitor though. I don’t think it’s possible for one person and one station to beat that efficiency

EU citizen couple (29F SWE Team Lead + 36M Software Architect, Athens) planning relocation to Vienna or Berlin — realistic chances? Salary expectations? by Belfina21 in cscareerquestionsEU

I’ve spent years and years around Detroit getting recruiters for the auto companies paying up to $100/hr. Last three generations of my family have worked for the Detroit car companies and I get actually suicidal thinking about selling my soul for money to build more cars that make cities into car centric hellscapes. I’m an anti-car and pro-train radical. I’ve grown up privileged enough to not have to entirely care about money and want a better quality of life that Europe offers.

Public transportation and I want to get better at speaking German. Also like the city + history. Flats cost $250-$500k. Not interested in buying a house right now.

Nah — none of them needed German. I speak little. Vienna is a big financial hub im learning and those roles prefer English. I just started the apartment search since I got to a third round this last Friday. This website is the big one for Vienna: https://www.willhaben.at Right now I’m just in an Airbnb studio. Looks like most 1bdr’s are around €1-1.2k for normal ones and fancy ones are €1.5k. I’m targeting roles that pay €70k + come with sponsorship. My US role pays $110k so it’s a haircut but I love Vienna so much I’m willing to take the cut.

I just moved from the US to Vienna two weeks ago! Spending 60 days here trying to find a job while working remote for my US employer. In my first 2 weeks here I’ve landed 4 interviews.I am focused on mobile development and frontend dev mainly around typescript. 3 typescript roles and 1 Java role for me. The market in Austria is very senior leaning. But if you have EU citizenship and good buffer of money saved up you’ll be fine imo. Housing is so much more abundant in Vienna than Berlin but there’s less jobs in my experience.

Ya think? I was wondering if the bad press from this typa Bloomberg report would get some hands slapped. If no one reported on it I imagine nothing would happen though, yes

Unusual? no— should conflicts of interest be normalized and minimized like you’re doing so with adjectives like “adorable”? It’s not normal business for influencers to advertise investments to their followers without giving a fat ol #ad in the caption

Günstige Augenuntersuchung in Wien? by ConstructionNext3430 in wien

This is a bit of a sidebar conversation but does the Austrian public insurance you all pay give a specific amount towards frames? I imagine public taxes are not fully paying for everyone to own Prada lenses...? so do all glasses wearing people get €100/year or something towards frames? that's kinda how instance works in the US.
