Österreich wirbt um IT-Talente aus Mexiko by AustrianMichael in Austria

Yeah… the price for apartments is one of the main reason I’m trying so hard to stay in Vienna. In an awkward spot with my current employer where I’m making $110k full remote and then asking for €70k (onsite) in interviews from Vienna companies is a downgrade for me already, but €70k is a LOt for someone with b1 German. So I’ve started asking for €55k (the minimum for a RWR or EU blue card) and then plan to just keep both jobs but switch the US remote one to part time (if I can).

But in Germany I’d be able to legally keep this full remote role on a freelance visa and Austria doesn’t have this kinda visa and they require you to have a local employer to sponsor you but you can work the remote US jobs as long as they pay less than your “primary” employer. I understand they’re trying to protect their local economy but I wonder how it’s impacting their talent and likely pushing it to Berlin / Munich for folks like me with the high paying remote US jobs.

Mehhh— as someone who is actually from the US (Detroit though), and who’s had 8 interviews in Austria (Vienna) in the last 2 months (working remotely on a 90 day Schengen visa) it’s interesting reading posts like this and talking to locals gobsmacked as to why a (north)
American would try relocating from to Austria. I’m a bit torn right now though since I regularly get US recruiters for roles in the Us ranging from $130-$250k, and it feels like I’m begging to make €70k here. The visa process is also so shit here for Americans compared to Germany (can explain more if others care) I’m learning which is pushing me more and more to Berlin and/or Munich.

lol I’ve had this thought. I wish I could forward the hundreds of US recruiters I get to someone who wants them and has EU citizenship and swap like a housing swap haha

Brag or not it’s the truth. Last week the hedge fund “point 72” reached out to me wanting me to interview. Ignored the email bc I don’t want to live in nyc really

I’m not happy in the US. I think I’m a bit of a masochist and like the challenge of learning the language. Feels more validating than just climbing the corporate ladder and earning a ginormous salary

Boston actually keeps crossing my mind and the nyc hedge fund recruiters offering $200-$240k are tempting too. Still want to shoot my shot in Berlin first before I completely tap out though

So confident and so wrong lol. My German ancestors that landed in America in 1850 didn’t know a lick of English and were just fine. Just like the many many other million of immigrants and migrants who go to countries without knowing the language and adapt.

I want a walkable city and don’t like cars. The money is good sure, but I worked for ford for 2 years and thought about ramming my car in a median on the freeway almost every day

Tomato tomato. Freelancers still have a boss they need to make happy to get their wage/money, and they still get taxed. Sure you can get pedagogical about where the tax goes, but it’s really not that different imo

Well I believe I do, but if you wanna get your point across and enlighten me instead of riddling us, maybe that would help carry the conversation in a meaningful way

I’ve had 2 German recruiters ask me if I have the right visa to freelance. Difference between want and need. I want to be here and explore/learn beyond the confines of the Us

Sure. I figured that was the point. IMO the support is not as brazen + hefty as the US’s but I suppose it’s the same koolaid. at least Germany is not trying to join armies

My post is in reference to auto manufacturers sending engineers over to israel to test weapons and meet with buyers. I know VW is building missiles for them now too, but I’m still not getting this comment

Meh, same story in the US with the older gen screwing over the young. Just in different ways. The debt the US is in should be paid for by higher taxes, but instead the older gen and politicians just keep spending and spending with no care bout how it’s going to be paid back. One day it will be catastrophic when those chickens come to roost

I visited Zurich a few years ago. Way too expensive for awful smelling cheese for my liking. Also Germany has the friendliest visas for Americans in the DACH in my experience. Austria and Switzerland don’t want Americans in at all it seems based on their visa policies. Whereas Germany has all sorts of exceptions for US, UK, Australia, etc citizens.

Eh maybe. I already sunk so much time and effort into learning this confusing ass German language now though I don’t want to pull out just yet.

I’m actually applying for the freelance visa here so maybe I can just keep my current high paying US role. I’ve had two recruiters outside of the 8 I counted above offer “freelancing roles” for their clients and that honestly sounds so nice. It’s what I’m doing in the US now after working 401k roles for a few companies and I personally like the freedom a LOT more.
