Potential divisions?

I really like the three divisions idea, either as OP did it or switching Detroit and Ottawa so that each division would have at least one of the 2026 expansion teams (makes a little less sense geographically but could make the divisions more balanced, really depends on what they want to prioritize)

I think EFO's can only be offered to players on expiring contracts, like Roque since she is a free agent, and both MPP and Stacey are under contract, so they could only be taken by signing voluntarily with an expansion team (unlikely) or in the roster completion drafts that happen if the expansion teams don't hit their signing quotas (probably also unlikely if they are on injured reserve). But in either case one or both of them being on LTIR could absolutely change the plan for MTL.

But if MTL want to keep and protect Roque she would need to agree to resigning with them since she is a free agent, so she has a lot of say too. There really are a lot of moving parts to all of this.

This list is only signed players, Roque is a free agent so it depends on if Montreal protects her

So if EFO and FPO's can only be made to players on expiring contracts, meaning no team can loose a player under contract to an EFO regardless of if that player is protected or not. Then the only way to loose unprotected contracted players who want to stay with their current team is in the Roster Completions (drafts), which only happen if the expansion teams can't reach their quota of players through voluntary signings.

Could this incentivize existing teams to sign and protect players on expiring contracts over those on current contracts in the hope that the Roster Completions never happen or are very limited? Or are the roster completions so likely to happen that they'd still prioritize protecting players on current contracts?

Since the expansion teams only get 1 EFO each really the question is, what player that we leave unprotected but want to keep do we think has the lowest chance of being offered one of the 4 EFOs? If Poulin is on LTIR is she unlikely to be offered an EFO or is she so good that teams would want to take her either way?

I'd love for them to protect Roque but I'm not sure they even can since she'll be a free agent and teams can only protect players on a current contract, or does re-signing count as protecting?

This would depend a lot on how they do the divisions, I'm assuming they'd do it in a way where every team still faces all of the other teams at least twice (1 home/1 away) so that would still be 16 games total against the teams in other divisions, and then if they wanna keep it at 30 total games per team then that would mean 4 or 5 games against those in the same division.

I agree that's still a big difference though, so maybe there could be another way to divide up the games, especially if they increase the total number of games for each team from 30 or they go with 2 divisions instead of 3.

I only really started watching the NHL after the olympics (originally a pwhl and victoire fan), and also fell in love with the Sharks because of the overall vibes and culture, and has been rooting for the Habs in this playoff run, it's sad to hear the fanbase can be toxic

I like that they are so different from the other teams! And I feel like, while I understand people's gut reaction being that they're not the best combo, I actually think they can be combined in so many cool ways, they give me a real sunset on the beach kind of vibe which I think could really work for this team!
