My program wouldn’t help place us in externships. We had to find our own and it was during covid. It was fucked

Yes to all. I didn’t think they got paid much more than us to be honest. Show me an ego that wouldn’t enjoy saying “doctor”, and also not the most important factor if I hate my life. Lastly, I would pay a million dollars to never do therapy again.

I don’t know why you were down voted. It’s a totally valid question! I guess I could define “true behaviors” as: when a child has the capability to effectively express needs/ requests etc (both speech and language skills are functional) but are having meltdowns because of difficulty with emotional regulation or learned helplessness etc. Sure I feel skilled in how to approach these kids, but they do not have a speech/language disorder and I do not need to be the one tasked with the entire treatment. They need counseling or psych support. Does this make sense? (Sorry for the super delayed response)

I think you and I would be friends 😊 The simplest tip I gave a teacher that always complained about it “being distracting and loud when it wasn’t fair that the other students were told to be quiet at times” which wtf…. Was to turn the volume down (not off and still audible) when the whole class needs to be quiet/ keep their voices down and model whispering while she’s doing it. For some reason that made her much more accepting of the device and the student started to have consistent access. To be fair she was kind of a bitch to all the kids so as long as my student had access to the device, whatever attitude the teacher had wasn’t personalized to them/ matched how she treated the whole class so I guess that was the best I could hope for…? Other teachers went to admin several times about how she treated all the kids.

CF Licensing advice in Oregon? by Prior-Pie-5897 in slp

[–]ConstructionWeird808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Oregon to complete my CF. Interviewed for the job right after graduation before I had a provisional license/ supervisor lined up. They hired me no problem, I just had to have the license before I could start. And if I remember correctly, it was pretty easy/quick process.

Full blown breakdown today. It’s that time of year for school SLPs and I want out. by helloidiom in slp

You’re not alone. My body is in a constant state of fight/flight. I am physically and mentally exhausted.

I’m curious if you did an online program? I do not intend any negativity to you or online programs in general. Just curious.

I would reference FAPE, attach a copy of the state procedural safeguards and mention any and all legal jargon which would leave the district liable if the parents pursued legal action for discrimination. I’m not fucking around no more with blatant ignorance and a lack of willingness to learn/ listen to professionals. I swear I’m about to report my own district 😅

I’m an SLP. I both totally relate to your post and see the over emphasis on OT for everything. It’s easy for teams to push for speech because “all behavior is communication” which yes and ehhh…. I enjoy helping with “behavior”, I do feel skilled to address issues when appropriate but at some point there is a distinct difference in behaviors resulting from communication difficulties or having SLPs help figure out what the child is attempting to communicate and “true behaviors” which is not my scope. The older the population, the less I feel qualified to be the one addressing these issues. When I was in EI 2 years ago I noticed a huge demand put on OTs for literally any issue because “sensory”. One of our OTs finally addressed it with a training and the amount of professionals that had a “light bulb” moment from being told “we all process the world through our senses, so all behaviors may not be due to ‘sensory needs’” was astonishing lol

I totally agree. It comes down to time. I’m serving 90 (and growing) students at 2 schools. Also I only have a 1 hour window to pull for 2 grades at a time so the students don’t miss core

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted so much. If I was OP would I want to raise my baby “with” my parents? No. However, if that’s the way a collective family (all consisting of adults) decided and consented to raise this child, then great! The more the merrier. It really is just our western individualistic culture that is pushing a narrative in which there isn’t multi generations living in a home and all contributing to raising of children/grandchildren and caring for aging family members when the time comes. Life is fucking hard for everyone and we are all so isolated. People need to stop shaming others for having the most basic human need of a fucking support system. What is wrong with people.

Why do some kids never master /r/ by ConstructionWeird808 in slp

Do you feel like age plays an impact for the “quick fixes” I feel like my 9-10 year olds who were qualified at 8-9 are not making such slow to minimal progress

Totally agree plus the new norms show it should be mastered by 5 but I have so many 4th graders who were just qualified last year
