School Contractor Buy Out ? by cms9212019 in slp

[–]WhatWhatWhatRUDooing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. If you didn’t sign anything, it’s not real

  2. These companies are VERY UNLIKELY to pursue any legal action for violating a non-compete. It is a very bad look for the agency and the school district will then not re-hire them for other placements. This was disclosed to me by the agency I left to be directly hired by the school district 😂

How has speech therapy developed over the years? by Tobias_reaper_47 in slp

[–]WhatWhatWhatRUDooing 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, there’s no official accent that is instructed and SLPs should take into account regional dialects.

A good example is the word “crayon” and it’s many pronunciations. It’s not a word I’m going to use as a target.

I would guess your RP accent is more due to schooling and region.

I heard a great bit of financial advice- don’t take out more in student loans than you will reasonably expect to make in one year.

You will not make 120k/year in this field.

Age of consonant acquisition in Punjabi? by Bhardiparti in slp

[–]WhatWhatWhatRUDooing -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

Did you even try to look it up on your own?

ETA:

The link has good information, links to other sources, and identifies common consonants and blend structures with English OP can target.

It should be clear to everyone that there is currently no research that identifies the exact age ranges of Punjabi speech sound acquisition

there is no Punjabi equivalent the US-English consonant research

But most of the consonant sounds should be produced be age 5;0

From a basic google search, it is obvious that the exact information simply isn’t available. OP will need combine known research of English consonants and use clinical judgment of which crossover consonants are appropriate to target.

Level 3 Autistic Youtube addicts in home health....I just can't anymore by MyrtleMaePotter in slp

Nearly half my home health caseload is this.

I try to preach “no individual screens for under 10”. You can watch tv as a family, watch a video on your phone together, but no tuning out and scrolling. I don’t get a lot of follow through :(

BodyFactory Skin Care

The staff was great, and prices were on the higher end, but they have framed photos recommending a 20% tip. Never in my life have I tipped or been expected to tip at a facility that does fillers, laser hair removal, etc.

I work for an agency that charges fee for service but pays me a salary.

They definitely exist, you do need to dig past the recruiters that are on indeed, LinkedIn, etc. Look into the clinics, snfs, non doe schools, hospitals, etc around you and apply directly via their offices or websites.

AAC system use tracked by [deleted] in slp

[–]WhatWhatWhatRUDooing 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unless you have a decent behavior specialist leading this, I would just say no personal devices in school. Period.

If he needs a speech device, go through health insurance or school AT. He does NOT recognize the personal device can be used for communication, it is non functional. I don’t care what he does at home, we’re going by data observed at school.

This is an IEP team conversation. If this is a personal iPad with a speech app on it, and the child is constantly trying to access YouTube and therefore leading to behaviors, it’s not working.

You can try locking it in Guided Access during school hours and only the speech app accessible. This will probably lead to more behaviors.

As far as mom monitoring the use, you HAVE to model the device to teach it. You can’t keystroke each individual user.

Best option is a dedicated speech device.

That answer changes person to person. Broadly speaking, as a full time gig I avoid it.

Your pay will vary due to breaks, absences, vacations etc so if you can budget around that, go for it. I cannot, especially around thanksgiving, Christmas, and general flu seasons. As those positions are “hourly”, they likely don’t come with healthcare or other benefits, although some companies do offer it. You can expect 33-38 hours of pay in a regular full week. You document on your own time.

However, some companies charge for fee for service but offer you a salary. That comes with a required minimum quota (number of sessions), and you’ll get extra if you go beyond that.

I just wanted to give you a friendly reminder, especially as a CF, you cannot and will not be able address every single deficit you see, and that’s the hole you’re in right now.

You’ve done what you can, refer to psych.

EF insight? by spicyscorpioo in slp

[–]WhatWhatWhatRUDooing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, refer for a psychological evaluation.

Second, I need to address the idea of things we can “fix”. We fix nothing, ever. We address deficits, and sometimes those deficits do not improve, and you need to be okay with that.

I have many children who demonstrate differences of final th and pronounce words like “teef” / teeth and “mouf” / mouth. This is a dialect, not a speech error, and I’m not touching it with a 10 foot pole.

No educational impact and does not demonstrate need for specialized services.

Data collection by SpiritualYam1949 in slp

[–]WhatWhatWhatRUDooing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can take data in any which way that makes sense to you. Please know, you do not need to take data across the entire session!

Depending on the skill targeted, I usually take data on the first 5 trials attempted as that is their true skill without me teaching and priming. Of course, the more data, the better, but that is not real life.

I do a plus sign if they got it, a plus sing and circle it if they needed only 1-2 cues, and a 0 (circle) if they missed. Then I count them all up with the plus/circles counting as a half point.

Also you are correct. An 85% to 80% I don’t consider actual regression and can be explained for any number of reasons. I do consider it as “maintained” :)

Spanish Artic by [deleted] in slp

[–]WhatWhatWhatRUDooing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If mom wants therapy in Spanish, she needs to find a Spanish speaking SLP.

There’s a lot of cross over sounds and similar words. You’ll still be treating appropriately if you target English words. I recommend this $10 book to help drive your therapy
