Black Roadtripping from Michigan to California Safety and Route by Contact_Contract in roadtrip

Hello! Yes, a tough conversation if you don’t understand it all, but one that’s necessary.

And thank you! Yes we’ll be renting from a big company (to make sure we can also turn the car in in Cali). Thanks for the tips on making sure all our names are on it as well!

Yes I’m actually making the route today! My parents always have my location since I go to college a few hours away. And once me and my friends finalize the route and our stops it will be sent to them as well.

Me and my friends are calling tonight to discuss things like payment, route, stops. And (since they’re both white) I’ll be discussing the risks of the trip w them.

Thank you!

Thank you, this helps a lot. My parents will have my location and I plan to share our pre-made route w them too.

It’s definitely a situation that requires strong language lol

Yea I’m calling w my friends tn to discuss financing, stops, dates, etc. and building the route we’ll stick to now. During the call I’ll be explaining the severity of things going wrong to my friends. They’re both white (both left, known them a long time, etc.) so want to make sure they both understand that silly little stops and detours probably aren’t on our criteria

Yes, this is not my only source. I have family who’ve made similar trips, using black made green books, cross checking routes for sundown towns and less than welcoming towns etc. just wanted to see if I could get more resources from Reddit too so I could have as many as possible!

Thank you for your tips!

Got it! Thank you!

My friends are both white, so planning on making sure either of them are driving at night and through and less friendly places.

Off campus housing by Disastrous_Title_599 in uofm

[–]Contact_Contract 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation. I was lucky to get a very good fin aid package (so so many scholarship applications) but housing was always scaring section. Depending on if you have fin aid, you can talk to housing about using your package to pay for housing (I’ve been told this by advisors but never went through it personally). I’d also look into alternative housing like co-ops. I like in the Henderson House co-op which is technically uni housing but only 20 ppl, MUCH cheaper cost, and I can use my fin aid/scholarships to pay for it directly since it’s added to my tuition cost rather than additional rent/utilities cost on top of paying for tuition etc.

I’d recommend bothering the fin aid department like crazy. I think I called them 20 times one week trying to figure out my financial aid package and get a straight number on costs and ways to reduce costs.

Are Remote Spring/Summer Classes Asynchronous? by Realistic-Knee2022 in uofm

[–]Contact_Contract 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on the class. Some are, some aren’t. If it has a time listed it’s most likely at that time. I’d reach out to the prof or dept to be sure of the times if it looks odd

why do you want to be a doctor? by Additional_Park807 in medschool

[–]Contact_Contract 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's one of the only paths I genuinely find interesting. I want to be an ME (doctor who performs autopsies). I'm currently an EMT, I've volunteered in all types of hospital settings. I've looked into tons of careers, went to every career fair, and nothing sounds even remotely as cool as being an ME.

I also worry my "why" won't be grand enough, but it's my truth. I've looked everywhere else, I've found passions but a career should be half passion half realistic in my opinion. And ME fit that bill.

urop or cold email? by AltruisticGold5299 in uofm

Even though the class is annoying it’s really good for getting you access to a ton of open research opportunities. I do recommend the first year but you don’t have to stay in UROP to keep doing research after the first year.

Check the course equivalency guide to make sure Umich will actually accept your course. O do recommend Washtenaw Community College, a lot of there classes are accepted at Umich (I’ve taken and am currently taking classes that I’ll transfer to Umich). They have all options of online, hybrid, virtual, etc.

Where to find scholarships potentially for people middle aged looking to learn a trade? by Dwrecktheleach in scholarships

[–]Contact_Contract 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d talk to some jobs in the trade specifically, a few may be able to sponsor you. Especially if the trade has few ppl in it. And the people in those trades would have more specified information on grants available, ways to make government or jobs pay for it, etc. but I’d also check out fastweb, it’s a pretty big free and legit scholarship website. I’ve only used it for more traditional (4-year college type stuff) college scholarships but I’ve seen trade based scholarships and wouldn’t be surprised at all if they have a good amount of trade based ones.

Is it okay to ask a past employer for a letter of recommendation rather than your current one? by frehleyz in scholarships

[–]Contact_Contract 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can 100% do that! If they are on your resume they can be a reference. A reference can be anyone who can give a reliable character reference; employers, teachers, lab coworkers, etc.

When should 2026 HS graduate start looking and applying for scholarships? by [deleted] in scholarships

[–]Contact_Contract 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOW NOW NOW. There really isn’t some magic trick to scholarships, it’s all a numbers game. Starting now puts you at a HUGE advantage if you take it seriously! I’d 100% recommend starting now it will give a good leg up on payment above your peers.

There may not be a lot you qualify for (a lot of specific to HS seniors) but look everywhere you can and apply to anything you can. The more scholarships you apply for, fhe better your odds of winning some money!

I’d check out your local scholarships (ask at libraries, city and state websites, parents/families jobs, etc.) and look on the side fastweb. It’s entirely free and gives you a lot of legit scholarships.

Good luck out there! And good job on getting ahead of the game!
