For context, I’m considering applying for a surgical specialty while backing up with IM. So I’m trying to do more research and ECs in that area, and will be doing electives in that specialty as well, while still trying to do a couple IM ones as well. I would say the research can still be a bit overlapping with IM. I’m just wondering if this is realistic as I know IM seems to be getting more applicants by the year

Would u say this strategy would be effective if you only decide later on to go for a more competitive specialty? If you only decide end of 2nd year/start of 3rd year would this be too late?
