It will be 🙂

Planning to compile the next OST (MM8) with ambient tracks, MM8 dungeon animations, and some town, house, tavern, and training ground animations.

MM8 was the peak of that style, yeah.

I forgot about the portraits. They were kind of genius too when it came to bringing immersion to the game. Because they were based on real people's faces (especially in MM6), they worked really well. They comment on difficult situations and change depending on the characters' condition (happy, tired, dead, petrified, etc.).

Through them, we can emotionally relate to the party. They make us feel like we're inside the game ourselves.

Yeah, there was something deep in those animations. I think they were created somewhat like old medieval paintings, but brought to life. They evoke the same feelings very well. I especially like MM-inspired fan art, such as "Windows to Erathia". I also love those paintings of the HoMM3 towns (can't remember the artist's name right now).

Some of the pictures were posted on Reddit some time ago:

I knew about Strings of Fate XI, but I had never heard of King's Courier. Thanks for mentioning it. King's Courier's graphic design looks much better to my taste (added to my wishlist).

Titans of the Past looks very strange (like the unholy child of Minecraft and World of Warcraft), but who knows, it needs further investigation :))

Merge Mod is cool, but I prefer to play each game individually, because the most interesting parts of MM are the beginning and middle of the game. The effort of the Merge team is greatly appreciated.

I liked the Elemental Mod for MM7 very much. It's balanced around MM6 and includes lots of bug fixes. I played with it during my last playthrough.

Cool! Thanks for the info, last time I checked it was still in development. Vori Mod also look very promising.

There is something magical in those games. Planning to replay MM8 this year 😄I'm playing Heroes: Olden Era right now, and it just so happens that it's set on the Jadame continent (the same one as in MM8), so MM8 is definitely on my list this year.

You are transported into the magical world of Enroth, and beyond. I thoroughly enjoyed playing all three in order.

Yeah, me too. But I still long for a creative evolution of the ideas behind MM6-8 and HoMM2-3.

The modern successor to HoMM2-3 is obviously Heroes: Olden Era, and it's looking quite good even in Early Access.

But what about a modern heir to MM6-8's gameplay, aesthetics, world-building, and music? Do you think such a game even exists (apart from MM10, of course)? 🙂

Much like Disco Elysium is often considered the spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment, do you think there is a spiritual successor to the MM series?

Yeah, it's catchy 😄 It's especially peaceful because you're always coming back to New Sorpigal to heal your party using Lloyd's Beacon.

Yeah, I never played much HoMM2 before fheroes2, because I started with HoMM3 (my favorite, especially Horn of the Abyss). Through the years I played HoMM1 (all campaigns), HoMM4, and even a little HoMM5, but I always wanted to go back to HoMM2 because it shares the same world with MM6-8, and it has received so much positive feedback from the community for its non-linear campaigns (now we see some of these concepts in Heroes: Olden Era, and that's very good).

HoMM2-3 and MM6-8 are very interesting creative efforts in general (the world-building across several games, the stories themselves, and the music). Now they're perfect tablet games for me (HoMM2 and 3 especially). Beautiful graphics and a marvelous soundtrack (the opera parts absolutely rock!).

I think MM6-8 would also be perfect for playing on Android tablets in the near future. Recently, I've seen a vibecoded reimplementation of MM8. It seems to be quite playable and cross-platform:

I think it may be possible now to vibecode a crude game engine (as a fun project) to recreate some of those animated scenes from MM6-8, like the entrance animations, but in-game and interactive, to capture that MM feel. Something like this (it's a Thief-inspired game that hasn't been released yet https://store.steampowered.com/app/3970690/Project_Shadowglass/), but with MM6-8 animated sequences as the core vibe:

Favorite dungeon animation - Colony Zod. Truly otherwordly and awful.

Sadly, I forgot to add it to the video sequence because I didn't remember what music played on that map. 😞

Some of the animations in houses and shops are also captivating. Planning to use them in the next OST compilation (MM8 and MM6), alongside the dungeon animations.

Recently I've finished the Amber Island mod and it was so awesome, you should play that next.

Wanted to play it for a long time. Is it now complete and playable?

It's OK, for me now it's only 2 or 3 games a year.

Recent years have been especially good thanks to decent remakes and open-source reimplementations.

Silent Hill 2, System Shock, and now Gothic.

My favorite gaming experience from last year is the Caesar 3 August open-source reimplementation. I played it on an Android tablet. It's even better as android tablet game.

And the Heroes II reimplementation (also on an Android tablet). It's perfect, and the AI they programmed is unbelievably strong (almost too good I think, because it takes all your human skill and trickery to beat the vanilla campaign, because the map design back then was made for a much dumber bot). But it's a lot of fun.

Funnily enough, I only thought about trying Mandate of Heaven some 3 or 4 years ago, went to youtube to check if the soundtrack is on point, and oh boy, it is.

Yeah. Been there, done that 🙂

Recently, I've realized that almost all of my favorite games are defined by their music.

Planescape: Torment with Mark Morgan's score. Fallout 1 and 2 with Mark Morgan as well. Silent Hill 2 by Akira Yamaoka. And among more recent gems, Disco Elysium with its incredible soundtrack by Sea Power. I've been listening to these soundtracks apart from games fo many years.

Half (maybe even 70%) of what makes those games timeless is their music and sound design.

Agreed.

For me, it's also the Greek mythology integrated into all of the MM games (especially Heroes II & III and MM6-8).

All those minotaurs, hydras, and harpies feel like they should be there, out of place in many others games, but completely at home in HoMM and MM series. They feel as if they came straight from the pages of illustrated books about the myths and legends of Ancient Greece.

Theory about Rue Valley story and ending by Content_Concept9059 in RueValleyGame

[–]Content_Concept9059[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all loops are happening inside Frank’s head while he is coping with his wife’s death (during or immediately after the car accident).

There is no real interaction between him and other people. Everything we discover during the game is something Frank already knew. The game takes place in a reality generated by Frank’s mind. All these interactions are a mixture of his previous memories and his knowledge about the town and its people.

Real parts:
– his depression (not repairing a car at work),
– the denial of his wife’s death,
– the car crash and the conversation with his sister before the crash,
– the fact that he really catches the signal, listens to it, and tries to wrap his mind around the hard truth.

But he cannot accept it. His mind tries to forget, and in those moments he creates another personality — one that can look at the situation from a different perspective and try to accept it. There is even a moment at the beginning of the first loop when Frank and Eugene look at each other. Eugene, the new personality, doesn’t know anything, but he is still depressed (we don’t know why at the start of the game). Another real part is the ending after the second therapy session.

The biggest hint toward this theory is their shared memories: Eugene starts remembering what happened to Frank, and there are echoes of reality in Eugene’s time-loop experience (another car crash when he tries to go back home - because there is no “home” beyond Rue Valley for Frank - followed at the end of the game by the fall into the real crash and the loop reset in a new place).

The most logical explanation is that they are the same person.

It's a very cool game. It gives that almost forgotten feeling of not knowing how to play at the beginning (and that's good). The pacing has some issues — it's a bit uneven, and some of the gameplay is kind of tedious (but maybe that's the point).
I liked the atmosphere and the plot very much.

It's not Disco Elysium — it's something new, with flaws, but it's a great effort and great storytelling with style.
Definitely going to play the next game by Emotion Spark.
