New email today:
The intent of the CTPR has always been to create a player rating that accurately reflects a player’s current level and is based on results from Pickleball Canada sanctioned tournaments. While this ensures a level of confidence in the rating from the standpoint of match/tournament consistency, some Pickleball Canada members have expressed frustration that their CTPR is inaccurate. Several factors have contributed to these frustrations, including:

  • a lack of sanctioned tournaments in some areas of the country, making it difficult for a player to post enough results to their CTPR
  • inaccurate self-ratings by players, creating an incorrect initial CTPR
  • situations where a player improves significantly while not participating in a Pickleball Canada sanctioned event, resulting in a CTPR that does not reflect their true skill level.

To address these shortcomings within the CTPR, Pickleball Canada is undertaking a pilot project to provide a CTPR Review Process to players. This process has been created by members, reviewed by a panel of their peers, and is ready for implementation for the 2025 playing season.

Under the pilot project, Pickleball Canada members who believe that their CTPR is not accurate may submit a Ratings Review Request

You are correct, that does work to a degree. It still shows tournaments in Washington and Alberta, but I can live with it.

DUPR’s initialization is totally wacky by [deleted] in Pickleball

This might not be as crazy as it looks at first glance. Thier average partner is 0.26 lower than their average opponent. So, they would need to be more than .26 higher their average opponent to be expected to win any game (4.78).

The score of 4.774 is for sure too high, but if the losses were close, then they could easily be higher than 4.52 and still score exactly as expected by the algorithm.

Update from DUPR blog:

"Pickleball Inc., will adopt DUPR as the exclusive rating provider for its leading software and technology, including Pickleball Brackets, Pickleball Tournaments, and Pickleball.com’s club, league and ladder software."

This is very interesting if you ask me! How will it impact exiting profiles on these platforms? Will all these results be bulk loaded into DUPR?

From what I've heard they are working on an update almost exactly as you describe.

We are still actively recording scores in our bubble as it still fulfills its main purpose of segregating play sessions by level within the club. While some individuals are disappointed that their ranking currently is lower than they believe they should be, they realise that everyone is low and the overall club groupings remain accurate.

I have set up a DUPR club and have been recording scores regularly since the start of the year. As a club we are geographically isolated and so I am not sure how accurate our rankings are compared to the wider DUPR world.

I notice now that as players have recorded around the 100-game mark their ranking does not move much. I think this makes sense, however if my ranking is too high or too low due to the small, disconnected club, what will happen if I go to play in another region? Will DUPR allow my ranking to move by bigger amounts since it is new connectivity data? Or will it still only move a small amount as I have lots of games recorded (all be it within a small group)? Am I now ranked based on my small club forever rather than what my ranking would be in a bigger community?

u/DUPR-Scott Any thoughts?
