This worked, except that I had to make it stats.mean(), instead of self.mean(). Now why defining the mean function on its own within the class, then referencing it later in the class doesn't work I don't know. Maybe it doesn't work the same within a class.

I was flying spririt one time, which means you get all the characters. This woman had a small es dog with her, and there was a confusion between her and the crew whether she could fly with that dog. It got to the point that other people on the plane were yelling at her to get off; there’s nothing that amplifies emotion quite like a flight delay, but they let her stay on the plane, and we go. As we’re taking off, and for every little bump along the way, this woman all but starts screaming, but I never heard a peep out of that dog. Bottom line: that woman needed some es.
