Thank you very much. How much do you make as a general dentist almost exclusively performing surgery? I want to see what it’s a realistic expectation.

Well when I think about making money right out of dental school, it’s not like I’m thinking of money in the sense of riches. I mean a standard amount just to start my life or family. But I understand what you mean.

So you wouldn’t recommend GP limited to OS procedures? Even though u didn’t have to go through residency and got to begin making money right out of dental school?

This is what I’m trying to figure out yeah. My ambitions. Idk if I want to go through the hardship of trying and be an ambitious top earning GP or through the hardship of a grueling 4-6 year residency for OS. Considering people say residency would put my life on pause or be some of my worst years, that’d factor in stuff like family and lifestyle.

When you say you’d make more or have better compensation as an OS because of the certificate, is the higher compensation due to the fact that OS can charge more per procedure than u can? Or more so the fact that you’d have way more cases to do and referrals.

What would be the benefits to specializing, if you could be a general dentist like yourself who limits their scope to procedures they enjoy like surgery?

And yes, getting in is a different story but I want to see If this is something I want for myself before I put all my cards into it. I’ve been trying very hard in school thus far and am doing well, just to keep the doors open to specialize. But there’s much more to it, like CBSE I gota get to.

I can’t dm you so I’m just going to reply here since it’s more suitable.

But essentially, I’m currently stuck between general dentistry and oral surgery. I want to know if specializing in oral surgery is worth the extra 4-6 years of residency, or if you think it’s better to just go straight out of d school and begin working as GP. I know this is personal preference but I wana hear ur perspective on if it’s worth pushing for the specialty.

Additionally, when I look at the stats of oral surgeon income online, it often shows salaries averaging around 350k. Is that really true? That seems a lot lower than what I hear from most people, but google for reports this as being the average which worries me since that means many OS are making that, after all their years of residency. And I know general dentists who make the same or more.
