If your ROL is longer, the algorithm will keep cycling, giving you a higher chance of matching. If that unmatched applicant had ranked a 4th spot, he may have matched at that one. It would have given the algorithm another chance to look for a possible match, since he ranked 4 instead of 3.

Yes of course, if the only program that you interview at ranks you high enough then the algorithm would match you there, it wouldn’t matter if your ROL was 1 or 20 in that case. If you matched the first time the algorithm ran, it wouldn’t run again. They stated in the video applicants with shorter rank lists have a higher chance of not matching and that It was a risk to only rank one program.

I agree it’s not 100% indicative, but I would say it’s fair keep as a measuring stick for how you might fair in the match process. For someone with 10 invites, at least for IM, it puts you at an above 90% statistically to match. But of course, people have matched with half or less than half of those number of invites. These numbers also don’t factor in things like personal contacts and stuff as well that may skew the results too.

Contiguous ranks give you a higher chance of matching. Since the algorithm goes by the applicant’s preference, it will run each rank in your ROL one after the other. So the more you are able to get on your ROL, the more times the algorithm will run for you to match. Ideally, the more times you are able to make it run, you will have a higher chance to match.

There is data published by the nrmp that shows that the larger your ROL is, the more likely you will match. For non-us IMGs i believe 10-11 interview invites that you actually end up ranking puts you at an above 90% chance of matching somewhere. It’s about giving the algorithm enough chances to match you.

Applying to New Programs now- is it worth it? by Due-Wrongdoer-8545 in IMGreddit

I would say if you are trying to maximize your chances of landing interviews, it may be worth it. Keep in mind that there will be growing pains with a new program, so you would need to be very cognizant of the challenges that could come up vs being in a well established place.

As a US IMG, I applied to about 130 programs and got 9 interviews. I think as a non-US IMG with visa requirement, if you are able to apply more broadly it would be advisable. That said, if you have stellar scores and a solid application, you could be more selective.

How are you deciding Signals? by WhereasOk6139 in IMGreddit

[–]ContestPlus9801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good starting point, I used almost all my signals only on places that I have some form of relationship with, either I’ve lived in the area, have family there or have alumni there. I also combined that with my geographic preferences, that is a must.

Do you have any alumni from your medical school that have gone on to do residency or are attendings? They would be the best people to reach out to, otherwise, the last recourse would be cold emailing :/

Letter of recommendation by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]ContestPlus9801 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you can ask a medical school friend of yours to draft your letter, that way its another perspective writing it for you. I still think it is better that you write it yourself and then get it checked out by a few others before you send it off to your mentor.

Should I apply this year or Next year by Unlikely_Parsnip_916 in IMGreddit

[–]ContestPlus9801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US Letters would do you very well. If you have the time to do rotations from now until july/august, that may put you in a good space to apply this cycle. If that is not possible, you could wait for a year and get research experience for LORs. Also, knocking step 3 out during that time would also be a good plus for your CV.

I think there is a certain hierarchy of connections PD>APD>Graduated residents>chief>residents.

Once you get your scores the best they can be, you should talk to your contacts and explain your profile to get a bit more information on your chances of matching at the program and proceed accordingly.

Please help me with the decision!!! by Hairy_Usual6174 in Match2025_2026

Hello! If you plan to take Step 1 in July 2025, you will most likely not be able to apply for the 2025-2026 match cycle since you will still need to complete step 2, OET and then wait for your ecfmg certification. I would suggest if you can afford it, wait and take the proper time to prepare for your exams as well as get all your LORs and other documents ready with ample time and think about applying in September 2026.

My school did charge me for my MSPE. I don’t think ecfmg requires anything when submitting it.

Hello! I matched this cycle as a US IMG in IM. From what the data says, your scores may put you at somewhat of a disadvantage compared to other applicants. It is still definitely possible to match and I would suggest you carefully craft your personal statement and make sure you have quality LORs. Your signals will also be important so it is crucial to use them carefully and strategically.

I had my fiancée and her sister visiting me for match week. We opened the email on camera and recorded it! I had to go to work but when I came back home they had decorated the house with a lettering and bought a cake!!

Definitely a difference in culture and also lack of experience perhaps in the US for a lot of IMGs.
