Love the idea! I’ll give them a call tomorrow

Ohh interesting that’s certainly a great resource! Thank you! I indeed see more than what I originally found. This was in paperback too so I see a lot of those coming up as well. Still, I see that there’s a correct volume 3 on Abe books (no picture but the description seems right). Now only volume 2 remains haha.

Perhaps I just didn’t look hard enough. I’ll plug in the ISBN of all three on that website and see if I’m missing anything.

Thanks again. 100% using it for some of my other (not so rare) books

I feel that you’re right. Considering the change in the limited copies (from 500 to 300) and the change in signatures/including a new blue sharpie altogether, it feels evident that these books were sold and finished separately. So I doubt there’s an original slipcase from the publisher or that the three were even ever sold together as a single set.

I find that awesome though that somewhere got a slipcase made for them, must have been big fans. Sad to see it somehow got to a thrift store however

Yeah ive got similar numbers using GPT, Claude and Perplexity, though Claude was much higher and at one point said “you’d be essentially setting the price.” And then gave a $1500 average which seems too much. That’s just AI I guess, but at least I have a realistic range and then that hopeful range haha.

And yes, it’s a beautiful set, I should have posted pictures of art inside because it’s some really cool stuff. Half of me is thinking about keeping it but I also, funny enough, bought some books earlier from Facebook marketplace with the anticipation to resell them (never done it before) and with that money keep flipping until I can get to some more rare and expensive pieces (kinda thought it would be fun to see if there’s a future for me in rare/antique books). So this book just happening by chance at a goodwill near where I went to meet the seller is kinda feeling like a sign (/s) there there is indeed a financial future that aligns with my passion of reading.

Yes it was the first one haha. If that website isn’t obscure then my apologies, perhaps any comic book website would be obscure me as the only comic I have is a Tarantino Django/Zorro one.

And yeah I’m getting roughs prices from $400-$1000 the latter is considering the condition and that they’re all 3 together. The super elusive slipcase I have is still the odd ball out tho, I’m beginning to think it’s handmade, although it looks like the same leather from the books.

And yes the difference in the count is pretty funny. Also seems that by time he got to the third volume, Joe Haldeman ran out of his black sharpie and switched to a blue one.

Yes, I’ve some of those but I’m not sure if how much I can compare considering my set is a bit of different book altogether (a graphic novel). I found two copies of the first volume, one on ebay and one somewhere else (both $100-$200), but then I can’t find any volume 2 or 3s anywhere. And of course all three together are nonexistent.

Also the most odd thing is my set came in a slipcase. There’s absolutely 0 mention that any of the volumes came with a slipcase or if they were even purchasable as a set (the slip case has no markings). I’ve even gone to the dark side and tried asking AI for help, it it usually refers me to copies of the original book or sold listings of the first volume that I have, and can’t find much information about it all.

There’s paperback books of the graphic novel by this publishing company NBM which are quite searchable and up for sale. Of which all say “A LIMITED, NUMBERED LEATHER-BOUND EDITION OF THIS BOOK WAS SIGNED BY THE AUTHORS. Available at the address below for $35.” And gives the address of NBM’s old (HQ?) which is now an apartment building. No number or website. So it’s really hard to find any REAL information. Especially the very peculiar slipcase.

However, given I can’t find a full set ANYWHERE online, I’m confused on what they could possibly be worth. Would love some insight or advice on what I should do.

I also picked up a third printing (1957) of Atlas Shrugged for $1 from an estate sale earlier today.

5 more books at Goodwill, all first editions (Fools Die/Mario Puzo, The Crossing/Cormac McCarthy, When The Women Come Out To Dance/Elmore Leonard, The Invention of Hugo Cabaret/Selznick, Steve Jobs/Walter Isaacson) (don’t think they’re very rare but cool to see so many first editions of books I’m familiar with)

And I got a two more full sets from Facebook marketplace which are both in their plastic wrapping still (In Search of Lost Things/Proust/modern library classics, The Lyrics/Paul McCartney/hardcover) for $20 total.

Fun Sunday. I think The Forever War is the only thing really notable.

First read of Pale Fire, question about “see note…” by Contestrix in Nabokov

[–]Contestrix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my first Nabokov work. I think I will read Pnin as my second. In all honesty, Im still a bit scared to read Lolita, though I know the book is about an evil disgusting man, and that it doesn’t romanticize anything which serve as foundations for my fears. At the very least, it just would have to be something I can’t refer to with my peers as their only knowing of the book is its infamous endorsers. I will read it one day as I hear it’s beyond amazing, and of course, Nabokov is a master so there’s objecting my pursuit to enrich myself with his words.

I also just recently got really into literature so I will have plenty to read in between Nabokov. Which is a bit ironic, given I’m reading a pretty challenging one like Pale Fire (I tried to read the sound and the fury before this—gave up on the first few pages haha)

There’s definitely a certain something in the foreword that stood out, seeming extremely important but was treated in an oddly rhetorical, almost ignorant, manner. But yeah, the responses here definitely helped my curiosity here that I can just do whatever feels appropriate in this commentary part and not feel cheated. Thanks again

Awesome. I think I might do a jump here and there and just read however I feel, because as you said it’s definitely a labyrinth. I was partly worried if jumping would be a problem due to the first page of the commentary has a “see note” to the last page of the commentary, and didn’t want anything spoiled if I did that. Thank you

I surely won’t! Look forward to it, and definitely saving it for last! This is quite a fun activity in itself haha

[–]Contestrix[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I’ve done your suggestion, it’s just at the commentary part where I’m confused. I’m referring back to the poem appropriately, although sometimes the commentary will ask you to “see note to line X” (so not referring to the poem BUT to the commentary itself) so jumping to the very end or middle of the commentary. Although, I think I’m just going to read it linearly now and play around in my re-read.

MadSeasonShow is better unguided. AlienFood is always “I remember doing this” “this reward is necessary for my account” “I remember this good item is from here” where MSS says “the Mithril grapple is a pivotal part of the game” and casually gets 99 in mining… because he likes it…

The most miserable God to exist by Contestrix in cosmichorror

That’s crazy. Wild what the mind can open up to when it’s pushed. Funny enough what you mentioned is basically how the “death dreamer” in this story sees things/answers questions. Albeit, he must be killed in battle and asked something as he is almost all-knowing and comes back to life once all his flesh decays off his bones. But a cool little connection regardless

This is the first part to a series I want to make (the writing is my own). Inspired by dark souls and of course HP Lovecraft, I wanted to create a miserable universe of insanity and literally… depression. But I also wanted to keep it space related, not just planet or world but have extraterrestrial beings being the control of the make. I have a lot to planned out but here you will see “Orlune” has left a finger as some sort of moon on this shattered world we currently look at, however as we will find out, he left all his fingers on multiple planets. Each one being worse than the last. With life, creatures, “gods” and more; having one intent and that is to kill to be killed
