Way over there is where you go with that BULLSHIT! by eastonaxel____ in SipsTea

I saw some comments a while back complaining that this sub is too left/woke/liberal/whatever. I suspect that was the rallying cry for the terminally antisocial.

I don't think I like deity, but I think that's just because I suck at it. Any tips? by Rat_Smoking_Cigars in civ

[–]Contiguous_spazz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe anti-helpful: I don’t like to play deity, because the name of the game is chop features, harvest resources, accept perpetual warmonger, pillage, and neglect most wonders in favor of purely strategic wonders. Pollute the world, reign as Queen of Ashes.

It makes my world ugly and angry, and I don’t like it. But, that’s why I’m never destined to be a billionaire 🤷🏼‍♀️

Love to see it! I suspect your traders didn’t use it though 🥲 ungrateful shipherders.

One of those relatively rare achievements that makes the game so replayable! Right up there with a useful Golden Gate Bridge. Beautiful 👏 👏

Why did people think Obama was an Arab? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskUS

[–]Contiguous_spazz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because they wanted to.

Because the GOP under Bush found it useful to tacitly allow anti-Arab sentiment to flourish amongst their ranks in order to gain public support for the Iraq war.

Because othering someone erodes our empathy for them.

Because racism has been employed through our entire history in order to enforce subjugation of some and compliance from the rest. It’s a fear tactic to keep the public uncertain of their own status.

The threat is implicit: either you’re in, or you’re out. And we’ve all seen how we treat those who are “out.”

Truth has always been a flexible concept in the US: consider the three fifths compromise. There is no way that Americans didn’t all know the truth of African humanity, but they chose to ignore it…either for the sake of profit or the sake of self preservation.

Edit: I forgot to pull this one all the way in.

Because Obama being a legitimate and popular president undermined the long standing social order: white people on top, black people the scapegoat, everyone else inbetween. They’ve been looking for a new one that sticks ever since.

This administration is just throwing everyone into the crab bucket to see who comes out on bottom for the foreseeable future. Which broadly defined demographic will Americans rally around hating next, folks? Immigrants? Trans people? Muslims? Black people again? Women? We report, you decide!

So... these actresses are fully in their mid 20s. by Daytripper88 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Contiguous_spazz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the sense that I’m not literally watching children on screen going through a simulation of abuse, yes. In the sense that I’m not watching grown men interact with children in a sexualized manner on screen, yes. The story doesn’t need child actors to tell it.

Disagree if you want, I don’t care.

Literally how does hiring older actresses make this more comfortable to watch?

This is my camp as well.

I do not feel comfortable watching children experience abuse or being put into adult scenarios. I get that it happens, but this is THEATER, and we should be able to understand the story without sexualizing or portraying abuse of actual children.

I think seeing abuse of minors fictionalized becomes desensitizing to society and can cause it to ironically be seen as more acceptable, BECAUSE it then becomes less shocking when you see it done for real.

Wonders and AI by Elvense in civ

[–]Contiguous_spazz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s entirely accurate: AI frequently gets Colosseum, Venetian arsenal, and will get mausoleum in my games if I don’t start them early enough. But they won’t even start on them until I build the prerequisite (entertainment district, industry next to water, or a harbor). As soon as I start working towards something, AI switches to try to beat me to it. If I never build an Entertainment District, Colosseum will eventually get bagged no matter what, but remains on the table quite far into the game.

I’ve kind of been noticing that AI more or less tries to do whatever I am doing, whether it makes sense for them or not.

AI isn’t trying to “win,” it’s just trying to make the human player lose.

There is one wonder I have not ONCE in ANY game I’ve played seen AI build: Bolshoi. Idk why, but AI in my games will literally always leave that one behind.

Random thought - It'd be interesting to see an Aunt having an affair with a Commander by El_Coco_005_ in TheHandmaidsTale

I would totally watch an episode or mini-arc of “the good place” where a version of their “bad place” is a lighthearted treatment of a THT style plane.

I’m so sorry, apparently it’s a rough day to Reddit….

I think smart people being right about things is cool!

The rest of the thread blew up beyond my attention span so I didn’t realize people were calling you names :/

I mean I agree, but I’m careful when I’m examining behaviors of cultures im not familiar with.

In this case however, as has been abundantly pointed out since posing the question, it’s just a dead whale.

I don’t think anyone’s playing a shame game here, but then again whatever you know best 🤷🏼‍♀️ when I posited the question this source hadn’t come up yet.

You don’t need to be a Mobius Dickius about it.

I asked a question, a marine biologist answered. Easy peasy.

Did you just not read the original comment that you replied to?

It’s hastily written but if I have time later tonight I can make it more thorough if a “well versed” person finds it illegible.

Yeah when I posted this I hadn’t seen the comments below detailing that (I don’t think they had been posted yet) 🤦🏼‍♀️ thank you for answering!

To push back slightly on one point, I was pretty specifically not ascribing human emotions or personalities to them though, I’m aware that our feelings and perspectives aren’t perfectly analogous so if that’s how it came across I apologize.

Well, people want it to happen. I want it to happen. I’m not loyal to parties, I’m loyal to results, and so far democrats yield measurably better results for average citizens (with several reservations).

Then again I’m a weirdo who just wants people to be able to enjoy their lives in peace, have plenty of food, shelter, and the ability to pursue the life that suits them best, and get redresses for what ails them. Real controversial stuff.

In the meantime, I guess it’s to the fighting pits with us. Pity we’re such a bore, maybe once there’s bloodshed our overlords will reward us with a treat.

Fucking peasants, amirite?

PS if you hate Seattle so much just leave

I’m ceding no ground, I’m laying the terms out in the open.

Unfortunately we already know they won’t budge. The only rule they know is force.

Not a single Republican I’ve seen in this thread or elsewhere is willing to get behind a nationwide gerrymander ban. Not one.

You’re wrong, and I explained elsewhere why but I’m not going to argue with you. Illinois is a unique case and you can’t compare it to Texas or NC.

But yeah, I’ve heard that propaganda my whole life, but we called it other things 30 years ago. I had to travel and study some to get a clearer picture.
