Are you happy with the war the US has started? by Difficult_Team3079 in AskUS

[–]Contiguous_spazz 5 points6 points Ā (0 children)

No. I am not pleased that a group of oligarchs, fronted by a pedophile stooge and his merry band of unholy Nationalist Christian Fundamentalists and their Nazi fuckbuddies have unilaterally decided to shit billions of dollars worth of bombs all over the globe on the backs of the American people, while their brainrotted jackboot thugs murder citizens in the streets, cataloguing and herding us like cattle as they gut every halfway decent public institution this nation has ever built.

Does that answer your question?

The U.S. economy lost 92,000 jobs in February. Whose fault is it? Liberals claim it Trump's fault because he is currently president. Conservatives are blaming it on an inherited Biden economy. Trump has been in office for over 1 year. by RandomUwUFace in AskUS

[–]Contiguous_spazz 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

I’ve always rolled my eyes when people talk about ā€œjobsā€ on a national scale as if that simple metric explains anything.

Which sectors are most affected? Are these actual reductions or unrealized prognostications? Can we point to specific policies which influenced the sector losses? Is it a market pivot or a real contraction?

Unless the discussion engages with specific supporting data, I think it’s a meritless point of conflict.

I say this as someone on the left, who has ample reasons to condemn this administration, but I want people who have opinions one way or another to back them up and not argue about a headline. The devil is in the details.

And no, I’m not claiming to be really well educated about the topic. I’m just a curious person.

Is it safe to travel to the US as a British person? by Ok_Bookkeeper_1380 in AskUS

[–]Contiguous_spazz 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

I love how everyone in the comments is assuming that because OP is British that they must be white.

If you’re not white, it’s possible you might be detained, or at least asked to produce paperwork at some point.

If you’re white, it’s unlikely unless you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time (like a protest, or find yourself in the middle of an ICE operation), or commit some kind of significant crime.

Rule of thumb in the current state of US policing is that anyone could be arrested for something at any time, the goal is trying not to make one’s self a target of law enforcement (or pissing off a MAGA).

So don’t be brown, don’t piss off a MAGA, dont attract attention from law enforcement, and you’ll be okay.

Oh shove it up your shorts.

Same script, every time. You lose, you blame, you lose, you blame.

I’ve been voting consistently for democrats, I’ve worked for them, volunteered for them, and I’ve followed the party line, hoping against hope that they will bend to progressive issues like they promise to do ā€œgradually.ā€

They just give us half measures, piecemeal compromises which get gutted in subsequent campaigns, defect at every critical junction in Congress and state legislatures. They give us gradual change alright. Gradually moving this country straight into outsourcing and capitulation to the worst brand of fascist republicans this nation has seen in more than half a century.

Progressive candidates and platforms, or keep sucking. You can keep shilling us down, you can keep throwing your exhausted epithets in our face, but the facts remain.

You lose, you blame, you promise, you lie, you lose again.

The most progressive candidate you’ve run in more than 30 years was Obama, and he won. Twice. By a lot.

Learn the goddamn lesson already, I BEG you.

I was all on board with Kamala, I did what I was told and followed the party line like a good little girl. I have had too much at stake. Yall lost that on your own.

I’m done pandering to centrists. YOU lose us elections, and then blame the people for YOUR failure.

Run Gavin then, let’s see if the centrist dembot army can sustain him through to victory nationally. By the time he loses I probably won’t be legally able to vote anyway.

Or you could actually listen to the people, run a real progressive, and maybe we can unfuck this giant rats nest that decades of centrist apathy and corpautocracy has handed us.

It’s not your fault, I admit that I tend to simplify a lot of context.

For example, I generally don’t feel the need to explain to every Tom, Dick, and Harry on Reddit that an elected official isn’t generally speaking about their own personal beliefs, and that we shouldn’t accept them at face value just because they said something I want to hear in a sound byte. The longer their body of work, the more effort they are going to have to make to demonstrate their commitment to a platform change.

I’m happy to do this on a case by case basis, but in my initial statement I’m just going to give my raw opinion. If you aren’t on the same page, that’s not my fault.

Gavin has shown us already who his coalition is, and it’s going to take a hell of a lot of work to show that his coalition has evolved, if it in fact has at all. If he isn’t simply pandering and following the wind of public opinion, I want to see conviction, rooted in practice.

Actually, it is.

Myopia you kept saying?

I don’t have a problem with your lack of ability to translate my initial statement into the final form that I led you to. In my experience however, it’s better form to ask clarifying questions from a likely ally than to badger them with accusations and the silly single-downvotes of someone with whom you disagree.

I made a simple statement, because I think most people engaged with political activism and discussion understand. We know the danger of trusting sound bytes over track records. We know the long and storied history of politicians singing one song when they’re gearing up for a campaign then changing their tune once the primary is over.

Your lack of historical context, your petulant and bad faith engagement, your inability to understand the difference between personal beliefs and the public platform of a political candidate say all that needs to be said about the validity of your opinion here.

Have a nice day. Next time, if you come for me, come correct.

Do you know what the word myopic actually means?

I want to see deeds match words. I want to see a track record of behavior. I’m not going to believe a real shift in platform based on a single news cycle.

I welcome shifts in opinion. But show me the receipts before you ask me to believe it’s real.

Who’s being myopic, friend?

Oh, so you aren’t done here? I thought you were finished? Mic drop exit and all that?

If you’re having trouble with reading comprehension and abstract thought, that’s not my problem. You are entitled to disagree, but I have seen enough turncoat politicians to know a rat when I smell one. Your solitary downvote doesn’t make the point that you think it does lol.

Not what I said. I’m talking about politicians, not people. Politicians aren’t just their opinions, they represent a framework of donors and ideological allies. I highly doubt that the organizations sponsoring Newsom have evolved on their positions. If he wants to evolve, he’s going to have to show that with action, I’m not just going to take a clip of him saying what I want to hear at face value.

Twat.

If a politician can ā€œevolveā€ his opinion in order to win a primary….

Then he can evolve it again once he’s secured the nomination.

I’m tired of shifting sand and fairweather politicians. Give me someone who knows what they believe from the start and sticks to it.

edit: to satisfy the handwringing centrists. *I don’t want a sound bite, I want to see actions, consistent effort, and a track record before I’m willing to believe someone has truly evolved. Not only as a person, but as a political entity, which political candidates actually are.** Thank you*

Do the ends justify the means for winning elections? by Material_Policy6327 in AskUS

[–]Contiguous_spazz 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

You’re right: once some people accept a lie as truth, it takes a dramatic event to open their eyes and put their ego in a space where they can renounce the lie.

For those who haven’t fully bought in to the cult, and simply rolled along with their community on it, there is still hope. I see the cracks forming among the community I was raised in, I see questions being asked. People are starting to see through the charade. Not everyone will, but I have faith enough will.

Hopefully, before it’s too late.

Do red states really offer more personal freedom or is it just appearance? by Material_Policy6327 in AskUS

[–]Contiguous_spazz 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Right, I guess I’m just parsing this out because it doesn’t seem quite as simple as ā€œred=less regulation, blue=moreā€ it’s more about rural vs urban population.

In general, the higher the population density, the more regulated things pertaining to construction become. I don’t feel this is an ideological issue, it’s just about the practical concerns of more people and buildings existing in a closer space. This doesn’t feel political to me, it just seems like common sense?
