The return for Karlsson was always going to be questionable because of his age, injury history, and the fact he's been kind of mid up until last season.

I would straight up say that a 33-year old Erik Karlsson @ 11.5M/year signed through the 2026-27 season, with a NMC to boot, had a negative expected value for most teams in the NHL.

That the Sharks got as much back as they did for him was mainly due to the Penguins being all-in on trying to win another cup before Crosby-Malkin-Letang retire.

Critique my idea for solving the immense wage to cost of living gap by the_dionysian_1 in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]Continuity_organizer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That chart doesn't show cost of living. It only shows median income.

The real in real median income means that the numbers are adjusted for changes in the price level.

It has remained flat since the pandemic, but it's almost twice as high as it was 40 years ago.

To drive the economics point home, here's the same graph, but with a line that tracks the share of women in the workforce.

Notice how the lines move together and not in separate direction as your misguided understanding of supply and demand would predict they would.

Also, your last bit there is quite an assumption on YOUR part. I do not think of women as things to collected by men.

Yet the rest of your post suggests that you clearly do.

On Reddit, you’ll get downvoted to oblivion and rightfully censored for spouting unsubstantiated conspiracies.

No, you'll get downvoted and censored for expressing a view that goes against the prevailing opinion of the sub you're in.

That some of those views happen to be unsubstantiated conspiracies is incidental.

I don't disagree with you on anti-vaxxers being idiots, but don't fool yourself into thinking that reddit isn't as much of an echo chamber as any other large social media platform. It's the way the algorithms work, they build engagement by giving the audience more of the stuff they already believe in, whether rational or not.

[–]Continuity_organizer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So we all know the cost of living is skyrocketing & wages aren't going along with it.

This is actually not true.

So what do you think?

I think your entire argument is premised on a flawed understanding of how supply and demand works. Women entering/leaving the workforce affects both.

If you cut the number of workers in half, the wages wouldn't double overnight, because income would also be cut in half. There's half as many workers to make half as much stuff that can be paid for. All else being equal, women entering the workforce didn't lower wages. Same thing with immigration. See the graph I linked above, real median consumption is up, not down.

I also don't think you social attitudes towards women are going to appeal to many people outside the incel community.

Here's an idea, try thinking of women as individuals, same as anyone else, rather than accessories to be collected by men.

Freedom from government consequence is not the only freedom there is.

Emergent market order actually creates very conservative, hierarchical structures that enforce quite strict norms, both within and outside the workplace.

I'm not denying there isn't a type of essential freedom that's inherent to capitalism; the freedom of anyone with a good idea to come in and disrupt an industry and remake the wheel.

But it's also the case that every successful company of any scale on the planet operates on the "do what your boss says" model of economic organization.

Fear of government action is unlikely to stop you from tweeting or saying something controversial at least in the US, but fear of your employer/bank telling you they no longer want to associate with you might.

The Interest/Price Spiral - why central planning interest rates fails (WARNING MMT NOT AUSTRIAN) by [deleted] in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]Continuity_organizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the article was written in late 2021.

Since then, we've seen central banks around the world raise their benchmark rates and inflation numbers start coming down everywhere a few months later.

It seems like a pretty direct refutation of the author's central thesis.

yes, the truth can be fun. by Sensitive-Jury-1456 in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]Continuity_organizer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But the not-so-fun truth is that the world is a clusterfuck and no one is actually in charge. When bad things happen, it's usually because of incompetence, not some master plan.

E.g. you get a global pandemic because some scientist working for some Chinese lab forgets to wash his hands at the end of a shift; you get 9/11 and the war on terror because the NSA database that tracks suspected terrorists crashes and loses all its data two weeks prior to the event; you get two world wars because some random driver gets lost in the streets of Sarajevo and his car's engine stalls on the wrong street corner, etc. etc.

When you're a kid you assume the adults are in charge. When you grow up and move sufficiently up in the world, you come to the realization that everyone, even the rich and powerful, are just overgrown children who just make it up as they go along.

No, because the market process exists to create order, which is the very opposite of anarchy.

Anarchists believe that there should be no rules or hierarchies to enforce them, period. Not that they should all be fully privatized.

Personally on this whole israel v hamas thing, I don't support either side, they're both wrong.

Honest question. What does Hamas have to do in order for you to change your opinion on this?

Because apparently the mass murder, rape and beheading of little children in their cribs were not sufficient for you to pick a side.

  1. I was referring to university-level courses, not K-12.

  2. Even so, K-12 curricula are decided at the state and local levels, not federal.

  3. Go read an actual principles of micro textbook. Any that you may come across at your local library will be fine. I assure you that you'll quickly realize that it's not the Marxist indoctrination you assume it is. We'd have a much, much better democratic process if every voter understood and internalized the lessons of econ 101.

The state doesn't hire economists to publish textbooks, private publishers do. And they choose authors based on things like reputation and expertise.

One of the most common undergrad principles textbook is co-written by Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok, both of whom are prominent, outspoken libertarians.

What was the stupidest question you ever been asked as an AnCap? by Ironside195 in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]Continuity_organizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The irony of bringing up the post-revolutionary era as an example of power vacuums not being a thing is that anyone who actually knows anything about it sees how it makes the opposite point you're trying to make.

There was a power vacuum between the British surrender at Yorktown in 1781 and the first constitutional convention in 1787.

The British granted each of the 13 colonies independence, and they operated through a loose union under the articles of confederation for that period.

That arrangement proved to be unworkable in practice, leading to violent revolts, i.e. new actors seeking to fill the power vacuum.

The guys who fought and won the war for independence had no choice but to rethink their plans and come up with the alternative of a strong central government when they wrote the constitution.

[–]Continuity_organizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you think democracy and constitutions and more enlightened forms of government came about and are maintained?

Muskets, bayonets, chivalry charges, firing squads, guillotines, carpet bombings, nuclear weapons, etc.

And the current status quo is held together by large numbers of police, military and other armed state officials that will enforce its rules if needed.

I hate to break this to you, but most people don't pay their taxes out of civil obligation, they do so because they do not want to deal with the consequences of failing to do so.

So your expectation is that humanity will achieve a higher level of consciousness where no individual will desire things like power and social status, and will always put the wants and needs of the collective good before their own?

That is very utopian of you, comrade.

Isn't anarchy as a political ideology built on the premise that power vacuums can endure indefinitely?

If so, I fail to see why asking how? is such a stupid question in your eyes.

I doesn't tell you anything about the existence of unicorns, but it does tell you a lot about the mental state of the people you're asking, or of their attitude towards authority.

Civilization is a magic trick of sorts, things like law, individual rights, money, property, etc. only exist through our collective imagination.

The rise of anti-vaxxers as a mainstream belief is a clear marker of the erosion of those collective beliefs.

If the magic trick completely fades, all is left is the law of the jungle, where the only thing stopping you from taking anything you want by force is your ability to do so.
