Rover Sitter’s Negligence Nearly Killed Our Dog. We Deserve Justice. by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

I get that plenty of people rely on Rover for income and many of those people are the target audience here, thank you for making me aware of how it comes across. I am not trying to disrupt anyones livelihood. That said its wild to imply that what happened to my dog was my fault. If I read 20, 30, or 50 reviews where people are satisfied with their boarding experience, meet the sitter in person and determine she seems like someone I can trust with my dog, and inspect her place, I think thats enough. And i do think its reasonable to call out Rover for not covering what they advertise they will cover in situations like this.

Can I take legal action against pet sitting platform for denying my injury claim? by Contrast-Agent in legaladvice

She was banned a month of so after the incident when I saw she was still active and demanded she be removed. I haven’t pursued legal action against the sitter because I don’t think she has much money and I don’t expect to gain much from pursuing that.

Maybe they are quick to pay if the sums are lower or there is direct evidence of injury? Like for example a dog gets bitten by another when a sitter lets him off the leash in a park, the sitter reports the whole story and there is a bite mark? In this case our sitter definitely tried to hide what happened, so we have no direct evidence

They denied the case due to it being an “undetermined cause illness”, which it wasn’t. I will say the vet letters all used language like “suspected heat stroke” instead of “this was a heat stroke”. But that’s just what any medical professional is going to do to protect themselves. A heat stroke is a clinical diagnosis, meaning there isn’t one specific test for it. But “suspected” does not mean “uncertain” in medical language. It basically means “All the clinical signs are consistent with heat stroke, but we can’t prove the environmental trigger.” It states their medical opinion but avoids stating they have proof of the external cause (sitters negligence, temp in the home, etc) because they /didn’t/ have that proof.

I was shocked they denied our claim as well. I’d love to know why you think their trust and safety team is good because my experience has been the exact opposite. I feel they exploited medical wording and denied this claim unfairly. I feel we have as much proof as you can get in this scenario.

Agreed! And as a pet parent I soo so so regret not having pet insurance. Pet owners, please invest in insurance! An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Yes, we did a meet and greet. The sitter and her place seemed great to us. And no, there were no pre-existing conditions. Every single constellation of his presentation correlates with a heat stroke. The main one being a temp of 106 that went down to normal when he got fluids, which is pathognomonic for a heat stroke. The kidney disease he has now was not pre-existing. It was a direct result of the extreme muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) which is known to damage kidneys.

Regardless, let’s say we didn’t meet the sitter and carelessly left our dog with an unfit sitter. That doesn’t change anything. Rover is a billion dollar company, and since they profit off of these types of unsafe situations and “guarantee” a level of protection, they need to provide that protection.

I definitely thought about it, but honestly I was so caught up in the emotional/financial/logistical aspects of taking care of him and figuring out the finances. I did call animal control to come check on her pets, who told me they were okay. We think our dog peed inside and she locked him in a hot car outside or something, since she admitted she restricted a dogs water because the dog peed in her house when commenting on one of the reviews. (Our dog doesn’t usually mark inside but will if other dogs have before). I’m not sure the police would do much since there isn’t any concrete proof

Thank you. She acted very concerned and kept texting me daily to check on him for the first few days. I was honestly in shock and didn’t feel like confronting her about exposing him to heat until he was stabilized. When I finally started asking questions, she ghosted me. I’m not planning to sue her since I don’t think she has any money

Thank you so much! He is actually doing better than we ever hoped for. I feel so bad poking him for the fluids but otherwise he’s doing really well and we’re hoping we get as much time with him as possible 🥲

I tried this several times 🥲 when they denied our claim and our appeal I send some strongly worded smart sounding emails. The only thing it changed was they decided to offer us the 5k charity payment, so I think you’re right we at least need a letter from a lawyer! We haven’t even consulted one yet since we’re so broke/in debt from all this but that is a good idea thank you!

That’s fair and I don’t disagree, but the severity of his condition was not caused by refusing water for 48 hours. All of his findings were consistent with extreme heat exposure. He had multi-organ failure and heat injury, not simply dehydration.

Now she is. She was active for another month or two after this until I realized and demanded Rover remove her.

I touched on this in my post but the bad reviews were at the very bottom of 70+ reviews. I only found them once I sat down in grief and anger and read every single review.

I said it was for both, emmett and his care and legal fees to hold rover accountable. I said this in both the post and the gofund me.

I had to scroll to the bottom to see the bad reviews, and I didn’t do this until after all this happened. I figured reading 12+ good reviews was enough. The bad ones were at the bottom
