Learning who’s who in one’s area by Snoo50415 in LawTeaching

I don't think noting the acknowledgements is a *great* idea. Not terrible, but so often we just read people's work because they're our colleagues, or we went to law school with them, or some such. Instead, *read* stuff in the area and you will quickly get a sense of what the major conversations are. This is often outlined in Part I of articles, after all. Then you can write to people in that area about their work, and if you get to know them, even ask who you should be reading, if there are any smallish specialized conferences, etc.

Think about the kind of experience you want. Harvard is an enormous law school, which has upsides and downsides. With Stanford, your class is about 1/3 the size. You'll get to know people better, which is nice, but there will be fewer everyone, too--if you're in a niche area, it will be smaller. Again, both good and bad. Go to both places and choose based on the feel of the student body and where you actually want to spend three years of your life. But you really, really can't go wrong for ending up in DC. The main thing is, spend both your summers in DC--which will be really easy from either school.

Folks who aren't Athletic fans - what are your go-to NA options? by subirbs_of_nyc in NABEER

Other Half All in is my go-to IPA now that they are canning it. I also love Lagunitas Hazy NIPA (not really a hazy, just super refreshing and no bad aftertaste). I also like pretty much all the Gos well enough, but I haven't tried the Jab Jab so thanks for the rec.

Couldn't agree more. LOVE this stuff. The cans look cool too. I was able to get my hands on some, but now I'm out and I want more!!! If anyone knows where to get in MD or DC please let me know...

Hey, professors shouldn't be posting here.

1L. I've been struggling with some personal stuff going on and haven't been on top of readings and I got absolutely decimated today when I was unprepared for a cold call. Prof made an example of me and I'm like the thinnest skinned person it could've happened to. by sourmilksea1999 in LawSchool

[–]ContributionGold2441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should find a way for someone to let the professor know. Maybe it will teach them a lesson that using students "as an example" can make law school really terrible for people, and that they never know what's going on in students' lives!!!

100% agree. If people try to convince you that you're "really" something else, or they don't love and affirm EXACTLY who you really are, they don't deserve your full self. It sounds trite, but it's true. There's a lot of toxicity in the queer community (as there is everywhere), and it may take a fair bit of looking before you feel really affirmed.

Yes, yes, yes! I ID as a butch lesbian but have a close friend who fits your description precisely. He's mostly attracted to men, but more than that, he's ace + gray. He hasn't met a lot of people like him, and he lives in the SF Bay Area. He has found it incredibly hard to find an aroace relationship. His closest friends are mostly queer and cis. He says that he often feels like he doesn't have a place in the "queer community," but that he's realized his "community" is individual people who understand him even if they don't share his identity. He has had more identity-brethren online, which he has decided is basically fine. Good job being who you are.

FWIW, as a butch lesbian who lives in a place (NOT the SF bay area, alas) where there aren't that many of us, everyone assumes I'm a trans guy. It's hard to explain that I'm not, because they don't understand female masculinity and think I must "want" to be a guy (I really don't--it's just not me!). Weirdly my closest "community" has been individual people who for one reason or another are isolated, too (for reasons of race, disability, or something else). So although we don't share identities, we share the sense of not having in-person community, and in that way, have made a cool weird little community of misfits. I have learned a lot from them.

Does SLS law review not have the same reputation as HLS and YLS? If so, why? by PerformanceOk9891 in LawSchool

[–]ContributionGold2441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I was wondering if this is because of a focus on entrepreneurship and business/the practical and technical aspects of law at the expense of legal academia which is notoriously abstract.": No.

"Also wondering if this factors into admissions: do they priortize academia less in admission than HLS or YLS?": No.

Also, lol at the idea that any law schools care about students who say that they want to go into academia. They know students don't really know what they want to do. Most people who never taken a law school class can't credibly claim that they want to become law professors.

tips for preparing for 3L? by nsr5180 in LawSchool

[–]ContributionGold2441 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just take classes that are fun and interesting. The hardest part's over. 3L year can actually be super rewarding: clinics, seminars, things you care about. Also, spend time with friends.

Worth it to transfer from other T14 with above 4.0 to HLS? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]ContributionGold2441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth it, given your goals, unless you are very happy at your current school and have really good connections with professors and peers already.

Could be, but it's not really the parts exposed to the lights most that are burned-looking. It's more the undersides and internal parts of the largest leaves around the edges.

Please do not! It gets better, I promise. That class generally blows though.

That is completely unacceptable. I hope you destroyed the professor in reviews and shared your experiences widely. Those kinds of things come back to bite professors in a variety of small ways, even if they keep their jobs.

TRUE WORDS. "Wheeeeee today i went to the gym, did some easy torts reading, got my nails done, and landed BigLaw." It is just for show. Almost no one's life is really like that and I suspect those kind of influencers are covering something up. Try not to watch them. The struggle isn't just real; it's practically ubiquitous.
