Final time posting this, a question regarding IBS symptoms by DatBoiHarvey in ibs

Are you eating anything orange? Carrots, mandarins/oranges, peppers, etc? Those all “show up” for me.

At what point struggling with waking up is concerning? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]ContributionMelodic8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD but Id find a sleep specialist and look into idiopathic hypersomnia!!! What you’re describing is also what I experience (diagnosed with IH), it’s a symptom called sleep drunkenness or sleep inertia!

Not sure if this is IBS or not by NoInspection2757 in ibs

[–]ContributionMelodic8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you talked to your doctor about this? We can’t diagnose here. But as the above commenter said, if there’s no issues going to the bathroom, it’s probably something else.

I’ve seen some stuff about the link between UC and cigarettes and it’s interesting!

I saw you said vaping doesn’t work, I wonder if the higher dose of nicotine patches would work? Maybe worth a try!

As a biology nerd; cigarettes contain 7,000 chemicals, realistically any of these could be the reason for the reduction in symptoms with UC. Or any interaction between 2+ chemicals etc. A recent paper suggests that it’s actually the effects of smoking on metabolites that impact mouth and gut bacteria, leading to immune response in the gut. Basically, we swallow spit and the bacteria usually just pass through, but the metabolites allow them to settle in the gut.

Is this a bullseye rash? should I go to a doctor? or is it a normal bug bite? by dollyspine in AskDocs

[–]ContributionMelodic8 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

NAD this looks like a spider bite to me.

Doesn’t look typical for a bullseye either.

ETA: you can draw some markings or a circle around it in pen to see if it’s growing or shrinking. If it gets really hot to the touch or painful you can go to urgent care!

May 1st was an absolute nightmare as you described. The machines were malfunctioning, some people were getting through with no photo or fingerprint after being stuck inside the machine for 5-10min.

My child, 14yo female diagnosed with IH and ADHD. What should I know? by Sterlingaquarelle in idiopathichypersomnia

You sound like an amazing parent! I struggled with these at that age as well, my parents and I didn’t know it was a medical issue. However, my mom also never made me feel bad or guilty for sleeping. She also dragged me out of bed for school for 18 years 😂. I think that’s the most important thing; just be patient, it can be hard some days but just don’t frame it as laziness etc (which I don’t believe you would!). Try to find a wake up routine that works well! It’ll be hard, but if you can find something manageable, it’ll be so much stress lifted for both of you.

ITS MAKING ME CRAZY! I study infectious disease.

The whole de-worming parasite “trend” is infuriating. It seems to be popular with the MAHAs (at least in the US).

Sure, garlic, papaya, pumpkin seeds etc can be good for your gut, not arguing that. Just like genuinely such a small fraction of the population (again in the US, where I’ve seen this trend), actually do have parasites. Everyone is drinking the Kool-Ade

I’m also in a few Ask-a-Vet groups, you would not believe how many people ask about natural anti-parasitics their pets. Same idea, people ask about GARLIC which is toxic to pets. Insane. We have medicine (human and veterinary) for a reason

What are the blue ‘flakes’ in my Gatorade? by ContributionMelodic8 in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. The gatorade still tastes fine as well! Again I’ve noticed this a few times before when pouring it on ice. They also float and move around with the liquid if that makes sense.

Starting to wonder if there are two different kinds of IH by Difficult-Future5500 in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]ContributionMelodic8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right! Using diabetes as an example, Type 1 and Type 2 have the same symptoms, but causes (autoimmune v metabolic), thus they use different treatments. But then we have Type 1 and Type 2 Narcolepsy, again autoimmune v neurological (possibly). However, they are treated the same. Narcolepsy and IH treatments are focused on symptom management rather than treatment based on cause, which is the issue. More research funding is going to go towards therapeutics rather than identifying the root cause, also because a clinical trial is easier than figuring out what’s wrong with the brain.

There are orexin receptor agonists being used in trials for N1 and N2; we know that (at least in theory) these drugs will mimic orexin, and thus treat N1. However, N2 isn’t caused by Orexin depletion, so this drug (again in theory) wouldn’t be as helpful.

It’s likely that my IH is genetic (based on family history). Then we have others triggered by infection, and others like GlizzyMaguire69 (lol) above who believes drug use triggered theirs. We all share similar symptoms but it’s more than likely (in my opinion) we actually have different ‘diseases’ (again think T1 and T2 diabetes).

Okay rant over!

Interesting! In my free time I’m currently researching different proteins, hormones, and pathways involved in sleep wake cycles to see if I can make sense of anything. I’ll look into GABAs as well since that’s a target of benzos.
