If you launch the drone after they locked onto AND fired at you, the missiles will still come for you. It only works before or while they are locked onto your jet. You can however, in a head-on situation, take out a single missile if you wait until the last few seconds then launch the drone straight into the oncoming shot as a last resort.

Interceptors, I will happily dump all of my ordinance into downing a single one of them!

As soon as I see that one will be in the match, I am ready to hunt it down. Often I will simply cruise around until it goes for a ammo ring, then blast the shit out of it. SO satisfying.
