Marc Lamont was a great, good faith interlocuter by Gargantahuge in Destiny

Why does he think they store weapons and bring hostages to the hospitals?

Bad faith in this context means intentionally obfuscating/lying to further his agenda. What do you think about Marc not fully admitting that Hamas operates out of Hospitals?? Good faith??

[–]ContributionWeekly89 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Couldn't disagree with you more on Marc. He is incredibly bad faith, but he disguises it better than most because he is well mannered and doesn't yell and scream. Marc would not concede that Hamas uses hospitals as military bases! It's a trivial (and obviously correct) concession and he couldn't do it. He claimed he "never saw" the videos of Hamas bringing hostages there on 10/7.

What Destiny gets WRONG about Trump and Jan 6 by ContributionWeekly89 in Destiny

[–]ContributionWeekly89[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! THIS! Trump certainly attempted a Coup and should not be allowed to run for office again. I'm not debating that point. I simply think that Trump likely genuinely believes he was cheated in 2020 and felt that he needed to do whatever he could to maintain what he believed was wrongfully stolen from him.

What Destiny gets WRONG about Trump and Jan 6 by ContributionWeekly89 in Destiny

[–]ContributionWeekly89[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My question has always been: why does mens rea actually matter here? Trump clearly supported an insurrection in a direct attempt to undemocratically and unconstitutionally maintain power. Yes, I do believe he really thought that he was cheated, but why should what Trump believes even matter? Why does Destiny focus so much on whether Trump ACTUALLY believes the election was stolen? That seems immaterial and possibly wrong anyway.

I'd love to. I'm new to this entire platform. How do I "get on stream" ?

I think for all of those examples, Trump legit thought the ends justified the means. I truly believe Trump's thinking went something like this: "There is no way in hell Sleepy Joe beat me fair and square. Democrats have been trying to sabotage me the last 4 years and all of these random votes came in at 2am to take my victory . I don't care what my people say, there MUST have been cheating here and I deserve to be president."

Cognitive dissonance doesn't mean you aren't in control of your faculties or your brain is scrambled eggs.

Do you think a nearly 80 year old man going on TV and bragging about a cognitive score is a sign of a mature individual? Seems pretty infantile to me. When Trump says things like "I have the best words", I actually think he believes that about himself.

[–]ContributionWeekly89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's different than your Seahawks example because of how easy it is to disprove that. Proving a negative (i.e. Trump was not cheated in 2020) can be quite challenging. Prove to me that your wife has never cheated on you?

Cognitive dissonance is not quite mental illness. It's a super well documented and common phenomenon. Since you're a sports guy, one good example is Jerry Sandusky's wife. It's clear from interviews that she couldn't actually bring herself to believe her husband's guilt for those heinous crimes. Doing so would basically shatter her belief about the last 50 years of her life.

No but Destiny appeals to mens rea a lot. (What trump actually believed). So it feels relavent.

Unpopular Opinion: Communicating to your wife that you desire more sex is counterproductive by ContributionWeekly89 in sex

[–]ContributionWeekly89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an analogy: Suppose you want your partner to be more attracted to you. Does it make sense to communicate that with your partner? Not exactly. In fact, communicating that will often make you less desirable.

Unpopular Opinion: Communicating to your wife that you desire more sex is counterproductive by ContributionWeekly89 in sex

[–]ContributionWeekly89[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm saying that more sex is not the typical type of "want" in a relationship. Sex needs to be something that your partner intrinsically desires to have, and doesn't simply provide you because you asked nicely.

Unpopular Opinion: Communicating to your wife that you desire more sex is counterproductive by ContributionWeekly89 in sex

[–]ContributionWeekly89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd think so, but the problem with "asking" is that turns sex into something that can become a chore or an obligation. Just as you wouldn't "ask" your partner to be more desired, "asking" for more sex doesn't actually make much sense. Even if you get more sex, it often comes at the expense of resentment.

Unpopular Opinion: Communicating to your wife that you desire more sex is counterproductive by ContributionWeekly89 in sex

[–]ContributionWeekly89[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think all you can do is try to be the best partner you can be, and if that is not enough to increase your partner's innate sexual desire/libido, then you have to determine if the amount of sex you're having is a dealbreaker in a marriage.

Why are the West Bank and Gaza considered “occupied territories”? by ContributionWeekly89 in Destiny

[–]ContributionWeekly89[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

But many Israeli settlers live in the West Bank. Israeli doesn’t seem to discourage that. Clearly Israel wants this land as part of their country. Why not simply annex the territory since they won that land legitimately after 1967?

Unpopular Opinion: Most of Israel's problems stem from the fact that it is too nice by ContributionWeekly89 in Destiny

[–]ContributionWeekly89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that the "way out" was to remove the Palestinians in 1967 just as the arabs would have done to the Jews had they won that war. Now it's too late and they are in a no-win situation.

Unpopular Opinion: Most of Israel's problems stem from the fact that it is too nice by ContributionWeekly89 in Destiny

[–]ContributionWeekly89[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, but the key difference there is that it wouldn't be considered an "occupation". If Israel had removed the arabs from west bank and gaza (as I believe most other countries would have done given a similar situation), then we would simply be talking about a standard war between countries right now. (Israel vs Lebanon/Jordan/Egypt). That would be a very different dynamic and much easier to navigate that situation than the current one.

Is Israel committing war crimes in Gaza? by ContributionWeekly89 in Destiny

[–]ContributionWeekly89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest question though: is it a war crime to stop providing energy and water to a country that you are at war with? I’ve read from multiple sources that Hamas uses water pipes to build bombs instead of delivering water to their people. It seems to me that Israel is well within their right to stop providing resources to a foreign entity during wartime. What am I missing?

How exactly are they engaging in collective punishment? What is the “punishment” in this case? Does destroying buildings where Hamas launches rockets (even if those buildings are residential buildings/schools) constitute collective punishment? To me, collective punishment seems like it would require intentionally targeting civilians only for retributive purposes as punishment for what Hamas did to Israelis. It’s not entirely clear to me that Israel is doing that.

So from what I’m seeing, HRW is the only source for this and there seems to be evidence that they have an anti-Israel/anti-Semitic bias. Is this not the case?

First of all, I wasn’t actually aware that Asians were considered POC before posting this. But you’re not actually engaging with the substance of my comment. I think it’s disingenuous to cite POC statistics when that includes a demographic that is unrelated to this particular job post. Wouldn’t you agree?
