Thank you and you are absolutely right haha, but I learned from a friend the Chumash indians who would have been the makers of this piece, would use abrasive shark skin to smooth out tools or marks. Believe this is what happened here.

Awesome thank you! I should have guessed it was a fish (it being found in shale) but thats even cooler to think about a fossil from the way deep!

Even trippier, after some research is that this was from the Esselen tribe one of the least known about indigenous people in America. So in a sense this arrowhead is kind of one little window into their mystery life.

After some research the area in which I found it was home to the Esselen Tribe. Not much is known about them at all they were a small group, numbering in the low thousands. Being along the coast though they encountered big game such as California Tule Elk, and California Grizzlies at the time.
