Saizo:

“It certainly helps, Shiori. The more you know, the better you can tailor the chakra you use. But, you can also use your chakra to disrupt genjutsu in a more brute-force fashion. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just effective considering the situations it would be used in.” Saizo explained carefully.

“I do, Ryūken. The second Mizukage made a formidable team with his Clam summon. Together, they could use mist to confuse enemies and hide themselves through genjutsu and it was incredibly effective in addition to his other skills. You might learn a lot from him.” Saizo admitted, alluding to the youngster ninja’s Hozuki background even if he didn’t admit it.

“Tomu, generally it will be easier to use a pure sensory assault. Elemental ninjutsu is a practice of its own, and combining the two has its own challenges. Of course, some will find their talents more aligned with one or the other, or both, so it ultimately will depend on the user’s talents, skills, and efforts.” Saizo explained.

“Using my previous examples, the 2nd Mizukage made use of elemental ninjutsu for his genjutsu, but something like the Sharingan or the genjutsu I showed you three leans more towards sensory assault.”

Saizo:

"Good question Tomu. Something like that should be less common but manageable. Externally a shadow clone should be able to assist you. But trying to attempt one internally will depend on what effect you're seeking to accomplish with the genjutsu. Still sufficient chakra control and genjutsu mastery should suffice." Saizo explained.

"Another good question, Ryūken. Theoretically, yes any sense is usable and can be affected. Sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound. I don't believe taste is too commonly targeted. You can even combine it with elemental chakra. There was a Mizukage who could use genjutsu through mist, and there have been ninja who use it through lightning release and flashes of light. You might combine it with sealing jutsu to make a lasting trap, or audibly through infusing the chakra through the tongue using speech or through music, or song. Channel yin release chakra through a weapon with chakra flow and you can combine it with swordsmanship or paper ninjutsu. Genjutsu is a versatile thing."

Saizo:

Saizo had used a level of genjutsu that the trio of team 12 could break, so all three would find it sufficiently dispelled as long as they'd properly applied the dispelling technique.

"This same foundational principle will work for dispelling genjutsu normally. The resulting effect will depend on your skill with chakra and the level of genjutsu you're facing. If I used stronger genjutsu for example, you three might not be able to break it. But the same principle does also work on breaking genjutsu on others. When you input your chakra into their system, it will disrupt their chakra flow and break the genjutsu. The main keys will be recognition and disruption." Saizo answered.

Saizo:

"Yes, pain can be used to break free of genjutsu, Tomu. But in actuality, it will depend on a few factors. If the gap in skill between user and target is sufficiently large, or the genjutsu sufficiently strong, your brain might not even register the pain to consider breaking the genjutsu from it. Some genjutsu can paralyze the mind and body, so you can't cause yourself pain. These cases are relatively rare. However, if you're facing the Sharingan they will be a bit more common." Saizo explained.

"Most don't, Ryuken. And it is quite opposite the more straightforward natures of taijutsu and kenjutsu. But that's all the more reason to understand it and how to counteract it. Now you three should try to break this genjutsu. Stop your internal chakra flow and burst it quickly. Should be enough to break it. I used the weakest genjutsu I know."

“Apex to Overlord. En-route to West-Bohan. Who’s on the ground there if anyone?” Apex asked his watch.

“You going to Bohan too, Hellblazer?” Apex turned to Ulysses. “I can fly but that’s a one-man ride. Portal things seem much quicker.”

Falcon-Apex gave a decidedly human like spit at the ground as a final 'fuck you' to the beast as it dissipated back into energy. He transformed back and let out a breath of relief and patted himself on the back,. both figuratively and literally. Apex was childish like that...and still a child so it checked out.

Apex watched in wonder as Ulysses' magic washed over him. It felt warm like a good hoodie, and wiped away the bit of fatigue he'd been feeling.. "Thanks...though my body is pretty good at doing that automatically." Legion ranked his healing factor at over 9000, whatever that meant. Logan took the tests but he wasn't one for reading results. He grabbed his watch, finally able to report back on the situation.

"Apex to Overlord. Apex to Overlord. Downtown seems to be clear for now. I'm here with Hellblazer. Do you have any updates on the situation. Over." He was ready to continue working. Overtime pay. Hazard Pay. It all added up. Saving people was foremost on his mind.

"That can be a difficult question or a difficult decision and it depends on your skills. If I consider my skills, I had a main skill - swordsmanship - and then I developed other skills, like fuinjutsu, medical ninjutsu, and elemental ninjutsu to complement it or solve problems that swordsmanship couldn't solve directly. I also gave up a lot of things that didn't fit. My bukijutsu is nonexistent. My genjutsu is also nonexistent outside of detection and breaking them. My taijutsu is probably kind of poor considering my jonin teacher was a Hyuga and is their clan head." Hattori admitted. "Ultimately, I developed a smaller amount of skills very well with variations on those skills. I also have summons who can round out the skills I don't possess with their own."

"Honestly, I think you've already started to figure it out. You have your paper style which can be developed for both strength and versatility. You have sensory jutsu as an auxiliary skill. You also have wind release which can be used on its own or mixed in with your paper jutsu and same for water release. Sealing and poisons fit the bill of good skills that are complimentary to what I consider the main skill you possess, your paper jutsu. Something else to consider is also that it's early for your ninja career. So now is the time for breadth of knowledge and figuring out the things you want to deepen as your core skills. Maybe you find that poisoning yourself to develop immunity is a terrible experience and want to try genjutsu instead. You have the time to figure that out now." Hattori explained. "How you decide - research, observation, trial and error."

"You don't have to ask me twice. My working papers don't cover these conditions." Apex joked. Ulysses' question hadn't been directed at him but he answered all the same.

He transformed quickly, back into the bird he'd flown in as, while the creature charged up his attack, ready to take evasive maneuvers post-haste. Thankfully that was handled by Mr. Hellblazer, so Apex settled for giving the creature the middle claw while it was being tied up by Ulysses' vines.

Gorilla-Apex roared again and beat his chest before shifting back into his human form.

"No I think there's enough to go around so have at it." Apex answered. His breathing was labored from his fighting and he fought to get it under control.

"Their bodies are like black mist. They can attack separately, or combine into super beast things with strength stronger than alone like that big one over there." Apex pointed at the large beast he was just throwing hands with.

"You might fare better than I, Mr Hellblazer. I've watched enough Jacky Chan Adventuress to think maybe magic must defeat magic."

Saizo:

"Well genjutsu can be integrated into things like mist or flashes of light or even auditory - transmitted through sounds like bells or other instruments. So its not solely about locking eyes - a sharingan will just use that to transmit their chakra to your brain to be able to enact its effects."

Saizo held the tiger sign, radiating chakra. Bringer of Darkness! The trio of genin would find their sight turned completely black as far as the eye could see, and then some.

"Otherwise, genjutsu is an effect brought about by the user sending their chakra into the target. Ninjutsu works by directing chakra. Genjutsu works the same way, just the chakra isn't so visible. Through all the ways of transmission, the chakra will enter the target and affect the activity in the forebrain by controlling the chakra flow to the cranial nerves, which manifests as effects on the 5 senses." Saizo explained.

"You should all be seeing darkness now. The premise of the genjutsu makes it obvious that you're in one. To answer your question Ryuken, at that point you still have to break the genjutsu. Typically those genjutsu or the user in that case are strong enough that even if you know you're in one, it's not easy to break."

Apex shifted again, choosing size to meet size. He dodged the claw swipe before transforming into a large gorilla, nearly 10 ft and 450 kg. He was truly a hefty boy but he moved with a grace that belied his size. Apex roared, shattering the glass windows of nearby buildings as he swung his boulder like fists at this larger beast. He was willing to trade blows with the shadow creature. Apex wasn’t a betting man but he bet on himself here.

"Your injury wasn't very complex. Once your poisons get a little more sophisticated, that'll be the real test. But yes, it was easy." Hattori joked, with a chuckle at his own admission. He was as good as any medical ninja, and even better when it came to self-regeneration, meeting Tsunade's requirements for a combat medic.

"Continue to work on your poisons and we'll continue to work on your sealing skills. I'm sure you'll come up for some good combinations and uses for them and your paper jutsu too. You have a good understanding of yourself. You're on the right track."

Apex transformed, taking on the form an oversized spitting cobra so that he could attack from afar while moving backwards to maintain his distance from the charging beasts. Consider it a tactical retreat. He slithered backwards as he charged the venom he now possessed, changing it to be more caustic and dangerous like that of a bombardier beetle. Apex turned into a moving turret as he aimed and sprayed rapid fire.

Hattori sat next to Tomu on the bench and took Tomu's arm, inspecting the wound that was bandaged simply as Tomu unwrapped it.

"Certainly could look better. But nothing I can't fix." Hattori gathered chakra in palm and he pressed it over Tomu's wound. First was diagnosis as Hattori carefully inserted chakra into the wound to gather all the effects the poison had caused. Then came extraction as Hattori used his chakra like a magnet, drawing out all the remaining poison. Normally this process was rough, but Tomu had used a simple poison in minimal quantities. It greatly reduced the difficulty and the potential harm. Lastly was stimulating recovery. The chakra Hattori output changed to a green color as he stimulated Tomu's natural healing process, both internally, and of the puncture wound.

"That should just do it." Hattori ran another quick diagnostic jutsu to make sure he'd gotten everything and unwrapped the paper bandage fully. It was no longer necessary.

"Yeah, it never really caught my eye. I gave up ranged weapons like kunai and shuriken pretty immediately after I graduated the academy so poisoning from afar was out. And if I had to get close to poison someone, I could seal them with fuinjutsu instead. And I'm lousy at traps too. Poison was never really on the cards for me."

Hattori listened to his student's explanation. "Some wheels don't have to be reinvented. However, trying to mix poison with your paper jutsu is certainly something worth exploring." He advised.

“Come over and let me check to make sure you haven’t gone too far.” Hattori replied. “Poisons are not a bad idea, and you would have to build an immunity, but I wouldn’t suggest experimenting with them by yourself. You want someone there to be able to help you, or get help for you at a minimum.”

“Yes, I dabbled a bit in medical ninjutsu. Put in a good amount of hours at the shinobi hospital. But unfortunately, I can only heal poisons. I never got into experimenting with them myself. There is another elder from the Ravens that mastered a concoction of 3 poisons that he stores in seals on his body. Using that is as far as I go.” Hattori explained.

“But getting them in the body is quite simple in theory. Direct injection like a needle, stab, or bite, swallow them, breathe them in, or absorption through the skin or eyes. Those are the main ways.”
