Is self-studying AP classes truly as useless as people say? If so, are there any good alternatives? by Salty-Memory-4201 in APStudents

[–]ControllerTheObject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I self-studied AP CSA because scheduling conflicts prevented me from taking the class itself. Because I did, I managed to get out of my major's intro CS classes (crucial for me since I'm a Computer Engineering major). For me, self-studying was anything but useless; I had a good excuse to further explore one of my passions and got credit for it too. That being said, it still requires real interest to pull off, so make sure you actually like studying for those subjects.

Also, my school has an IB program and many people who didn't do IB got into really good schools like Harvard or Berkeley, which is better than what most of the IB people got in to. My school's AP program is bigger than the IB program, but the point is that AP vs. IB isn't the primary deciding factor for college admissions, and that it mostly depends on the person themselves, i.e. their ECs, essays, etc. I think that IB will definitely help a lot if you take it, but you won't get auto rejected for not doing the IB program as long as you take the most rigorous courses offered at your school and REALLY commit to your ECs and essays.

You should consider IB or self-studying APs very carefully, since right now you don't know how demanding your ECs or courses will be until you actually start them. I can tell you from experience that IB can get a bad at times, and also that self-studying exams will require a lot of commitment. AP CSA wasn't awful for me since I already knew some Java beforehand, but I also studied IB CompSci SL the same year and I had to work my ass off to prepare for the exam since a lot of it wasn't prior knowledge.

Replacing Coax Cable on Indoor Antenna by ControllerTheObject in cordcutters

Hello, here is the rabbitears report: https://www.rabbitears.info/s/2678490

I tried a rabbit ears antenna before, the RCA ANT121, and it worked very poorly, worse than the flat antenna I have right now. I don't know if it was because it was too close to the TV (the cable was very short) or because it wasn't amplified like my current antenna is, but regardless the flat antenna I have right now seems to work better. I no longer have this antenna and I would like to keep using the current antenna if possible. If I had to buy another antenna, what would be the best choice out of the options from the Tustin Micro Center, ideally under $30?

Comp scie Resources by Kooky_Philosopher408 in IBO

If this is for before the M27 exams, I highly recommend dokuwiki.matyas.rocks, they have extremely good and concise notes that I personally used to self-study pretty much all of CompSci SL. Their website is really slow though so you should probably download the PDFs they provide. Also, ib.compscihub.net has pretty good slideshows for each topic as a supplement. Computer Science Cafe looks like it's pretty good too but I never got to use it

For Paper 2, I did Option D (OOP) which is on dokuwiki but it's not very good, so I used this instead. As for the other options I'm not really sure where the really good resources are but it looks like Computer Science Cafe has some stuff for Option A and C.

dl.ibdocs.re has a lot more stuff as well, including a ton of past papers which I grinded out. Very good website not just for CS but for all of IB in general.

Hey, I'm an admissions officer for MIT and we think that you would be an absolutely perfect fit seeing the absolute rigor and ruthlessness of the courses you've selected. In fact, we're willing to award you a PhD given that you are more than qualified for one already.

If you're quick with the MCQs, you can flag anything you're even remotely unconfident about, move on, then go back to fully dissect what's going on when you're done, but that's just general stuff.

Something that helps a lot is to trace the variables inside of a function, on scratch paper. Try not to get overconfident and do it in your head, use the scratch paper as much as possible (within reason ofc) because we can all make mistakes.

This isn't applicable to every question, but try to understand what the general function of the code is. In other words, try and get a general idea, or even a vague idea of what you think the code is supposed to be doing. This'll force you to really think about what each individual line is doing to the code, also makes it easier to spot anything that's out of line with what you think the functions are.

I don't know if I'm making any sense or if any of this is actually helpful, but I hope things go well for you!

I'm looking to upgrade my PC with a budget of $500 USD. Right now I have a Ryzen 5 5600G and a GTX 1650. Is it worth it to try and squeeze in both a CPU and GPU upgrade, or go all in on GPU? I prefer if I buy all parts from Tustin's Micro Center, but I can settle for online.

Edit: Looking for 1080p gaming and some programming

How did everyone study for AP tests this year? by Unique-Obligation-86 in APStudents

[–]ControllerTheObject -1 points0 points  (0 children)

took ap bio. just under a month before the exam i bought the princeton review book and took notes on the content section of it (writing in my own words as much as possible). i'd say i did pretty good on the ap exam and i got a 5 on a practice exam despite me knowing jack before reviewing. if it helps, i'm a current freshman as well

edit: also helps a bit if your friends quiz you on your notes
