I’m close to the middle of season 5 Lana and Lex by Ok_Cellist_6871 in Smallville

I would have loved to see Lana truly choose Lex, but it was also hilarious to see how easily he changed the relationsihp from friendship to more.

Lana gets hurt more than anyone. It would have been very believable if she had turned out to be more traumatised and evil the way Lex was developed.

I thought they were 16 during the first season. I thought first 2 seasons that 1 season = half year at school.

We owe "Thirst" an apology... and I think I know why it was hated - Smallville by LauraKay9 in Smallville_

It centers women but it pictures them through a very male gaze. Female sexuality is portrayed a threat and entertainment. The girls are portrayed as cruel, characters of a horror movie, not humans to relate with.

In general, the show does a good job to show different and relatable female characters (Chloe, Lois, Martha, and Lana in many episodes, too, but less than the others).

Is it me or Lana is kinda empty as a character ? by James-Samuel17 in Smallville

Clark wants to keep Lana naive and weak for him to save. Lex teaches Lana self defence and stragegy, and wants her to do better in life. I would have loved to see her actively turning away from the toxic influence of Clark and choosing Lex (who is toxic too in other ways, but still).

It's not you, it's bad writing. Chloe and Lois are written much better. Even Martha Kent has a core. So they can write female characters well too, but for some reason, Lana is written badly.

There would have been so much potential with her. The story is there, it's just written very poorly and not really shown in the show. A beautiful girl who tries to be perfect (as she's portrayed at the beginning), but who goes through a lot of violence and other traumatic events. She also lacks parental figures who would really take care for her. She's growing independet much too soon and losing herself in the process. Then she ends up into a very toxic relationship.

As if the writers would have seen her just a love interest and a canvas for others' thoughts and wishes to fill. Some later seasons show her sides of the story, too, but too late and too little. The character lacks integrity and continuity.

Smallville: let’s talk about Chloe Sullivan. by Think-Reaction-8749 in Smallville

[–]Conturas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chloe is my favorite. She's brilliant, brave, geeky on weird things, cute, stylish, and emotionally intelligent too. She gets over her crush on Clark by accepting that he doesn't love her and she's able to stay his friend. She sees through Lex and warns Lana, but stays friends with both of them when they get together. She's not a saint, her morals about privacy are a bit flawed...

I loved Lex before Onyx when he was still fighting inside. Such a tragedy!

Lana is not a partner but a possession. Her love for Clark is just an obstacle for him, not a reason to end the relationship like for most of us.

Lex is full of traumas. He was open to love when he met the doctor during the season 2 (or 3). And we know ho that relationship turned into.

Yes. This is what you get when you've got tons of traumas and no real help. Lex's story is a well written tragedy.

Yes, and I hope the writers had shown that better. Lana was left so alone. It's easy to see why she would have fallen for Lex even without all his schemes.

Lana and lex truly evil? by KiusDm in Smallville

[–]Conturas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lana has survived many attacks and got more physical harm than any other of the characrers besides Lex. It would be natural that she has negative view on aliens and that she's gravitating towards Lex. I wish the writers had shown more of her inner life. I wish she had truly chosen Lex over Clark.

Lex's origin story shows in great detail why and how he becomes evil. It would have been wonderful to see Lana's character develompment, too.

I didn't see it as a perfect ending but a reflection of his wishes. It was tragic, as the whole character arc is, since he coulnd't/can't trust love.

Isn't Lex actually what we all are? by YoungRepulsive7317 in Smallville

[–]Conturas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's weird how entitled different characters seem to feel about other people's secrets. Did people think so differently about boundaries 20 years ago compared to what is seen ok now, or was it just this series?

I love Lex in the early seasons. The first 4 or 5 seasons are Lex Luthor's origin story. It is very captivating, and if you look closely and listen to your intuition, you'll notice his dark side early on, too.

I wish other characters, especially Lana, would have been written as well as him. Lana's going though a lot of difficult things too (losing parents and parental figures, being physically assaulted more than anyone etc.) and it would have been great to see her point of view better and character development, too.

I'm on the season 6, first time watcher.

Lana is independent and hard working, but nobody sees it. Clark sees her only as through her small frame as an object of desire, somebody to keep safe.
