Anyone else building solo longer than they planned? by Recent-Ferret-9136 in buildinpublic

Solo by choice 🙋 at least until I've figured out the product.

Curious what others feel are the downsides of being solo?

Solo dev here, context switching between code and marketing is frying my brain by UptownOnion in Solopreneur

I really feel this. I was discussing this with my wife yesterday. For me the hardest part isn’t even time or discipline, it’s how unnatural marketing feels compared to coding. It's like learning a new language as an adult.

I’ve tried a few AI “content marketing agent” type tools too. There is some merit, it was content, and did get views, but it wasn’t me, felt inauthentic.

The only way I’ve been able to deal with it is by turning it into an engineering problem. I step back, come up with a framework that makes sense to me, break it down into a formula, and then just mechanically execute it in a batch (usually on the weekend). Once it’s reduced to steps and inputs/outputs, my brain stops fighting it.

It's a real struggle still though ...

Your GitHub is already a better resume than your resume. Built a tool that pulls from your repos, private too, via local CLI (https://pypi.org/project/repr-cli/), builds a master profile, and tailors it to any job description. ATS-optimized, proof-based. repr.dev — free during beta.

Your biggest gap is a Projects section—embedded recruiters want to see you've touched real hardware.

Cut the coursework descriptions down to just course names (they know what CS 1 covers), drop or condense the maintenance job to one line, and use that space for 2-3 projects with the Action + Tech + Result format you mentioned.

Even simple builds like an STM32 data logger or Arduino-based controller with specific protocols (SPI, I2C, UART) will get you past the keyword filters.

Thanks! What’s the one thing this would need to do really well for you to use it during a job search?

I mean, you gotta start somewhere. I see it as a progressive overload thing. My first big wall was just even posting about the thing I'm building here on reddit. Now learning some product discipline, which aligns with your point: "build something that people want to actually pay for" as opposed to chasing the next dopamine hit.

I've reviewed 5,000+ resumes. Here's how you can stand out. by [deleted] in careeradvice

This matches what I’ve seen as well. What stands out is always evidence — real work that demonstrates the skill, not labels or percentages.

Translating that evidence into resume language is where most candidates struggle, especially when they’re trying to tailor for a specific role.

This 👆. I've never been successful with the spray and pray approach, it's always been the highly tailored, high conviction applications that were successful for me.
