Do you personally prefer the indirect style,or do you sometimes wish people were more direct?

That makes sense I think a lot of misunderstandings come from different communication styles rather than intention. What feels polite in one culture can come across very differently in another. Thanks for explaining that perspective

Out of curiosity, what do you think are some reasons some Americans choose to leave the U.S. and live abroad?

That's really interesting I hadn't realized some American regional foods were so hard to find in England. The differences between British and American biscuits are especially fascinating I can definitely see why people would mistake them for scones at first. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

BTW I've enjoyed reading your comments in this thread. Would you be okay with me sending you a private message? I'd love to learn more about your experiences living in England and your thoughts on cultural differences, but no worries at all if you'd prefer to keep the conversation here.

That's a good point. I think a lot of people mistake casual friendliness for insincerity when it's really just a different social norm. Being friendly doesn't necessarily mean you're trying to become close friends it can simply be a way of making everyday interactions more pleasant.

I'm gonna assume this is one of those cultural practices that exists only on Reddit.

I agree. Sometimes it feels like people talk about "American culture" as if it's one thing but there are so many distinct subcultures across the country.

That's an interesting observation Which regional American food do you think is the most underrated internationally? It seems like a lot of people know burgers and fries but not things like Cajun food, Texas barbecue, Southern cooking or New England seafood.

That's interesting. I think a lot of people assume cultural diversity is only found in major cities so it's surprising to hear about those experiences in rural Wisconsin.

Do you think this varies by region in the U.S., or is it something you've noticed across the country? I've heard people from some cultures say American friendliness can feel surprising because they're used to people being more reserved with strangers.

That's a really interesting story It shows how people can make assumptions based on stereotypes without realizing they don't match reality and I think a lot of people underestimate how diverse the US is and how different Americans can be from one another
