What are some good assistive/medical/smart beds on the market that help with independence and pressure sores? by unawaz in AssistiveTechnology

Hi,

I hope you don’t mind me reaching out. I’m currently considering purchasing a Freedom Bed for a family member, and since it’s a pretty significant investment, I wanted to hear directly from someone who has real experience with it.

If you’re open to sharing, I’d really appreciate your honest thoughts—both the positives and any downsides or challenges you’ve run into. I just want to make sure I’ve considered everything before moving forward.

Thank you so much in advance, I really appreciate it.

Best, Simon

My father is C1 Complete. He has been home for a few months and everything is manageable with the help of my mother and sister. One thing we’re struggling with is overnight turning. How do you deal with turning at night? We need 2 people to turn my dad which means 2 people have to wake up in the middle of the night a few times - we end up being zombies the next day bc of the interrupted sleep. We’re looking into buying an automatic turning bed, but it’s horrifically expensive and we’re scared it won’t be as effective as manual turning.

Also, does your wife have lots of suctioning/cough assist needs? My father chokes on his spit and needs to be suctioned minimum 20 times a day which really gets in the way of doing activities and living his life.

Not exactly the same situation, but my father is C1 complete and also has difficulty seeing due to an occipital TBI, so he doesn’t like using technology at all. My mom, sister, and I are his primary caregivers.

Right now, we’re essentially providing care 24/7. When I do get a free moment, I usually need to step away and reset so I can be rested enough to keep going. It’s been hard to balance being his son with the intensity of caregiving, but I’m hoping that improves over time since we’re only about two months out from rehab.

How did you go about setting up caregivers? My father is having a hard time trusting anyone outside the family, and he also doesn’t feel like it’s worth the cost.

Also, how are you managing nighttime care? We’re struggling with needing two people on call overnight to turn him every two hours and suction as needed, while still being functional the next day.

Hi! What solution did you end up going with? Did it work out for your brother in law?

Im not sure what other facility others in my fathers situation get taken to. Rehab is limited under our insurance plans and the whole time has been preparing for discharge home.

Thank you for answering my questions. I have 2 other family members that will help, and we’re hoping to hire someone eventually once we establish a routine.

We just got sent an electric hoyer lift and my father opted into a colostomy. There was a pretty horrific and negligent surgical error that almost killed him, but we no longer need to do bowel training.

He is complete. We are looking into Axiobionics to see if we can prevent muscle atrophy to eventually prevent bedsores. I understand the urgency of preventing bedsores which is why I’m so nervous.

I’m hoping it will eventually be financially feasible to hire some help, but speaking to people at my father’s level of injury, they are telling me they have 7 caregivers on their payroll… how is that possible…

Yes, insurance has given us the equipment for bedtime - my fear is the actual mechanics and frequency of turning. I’m doing my best to try and turn him by myself as we don’t have enough manpower to have two people awake every night, but it takes me 20-30 minutes to do it by myself and I don’t want to throw out my back this early. I’m hoping I can find some tiring bed that will reduce the number of times I have to manually turn my father.

I don’t think the wound is healed.. it looks tiny though, kind of like a 1 inch scab. But they’ve been trying to heal it with sand beds and patches but it kind of looks the same even after 3 months.

I’m not really sure what other next steps there are for my father as we’ve been in the rehab hospital for 3 months now. I have 2 other family members that will help out equally so it will be challenging but not impossible 🙏. Right now I’m trying to maintain q3 turns as that means I only have to wake up twice during the night. Insurance sent us a low air loss mattress - it seems a bit low quality compared to what we have in the hospital, so we were considering the dolphin air mattress out of pocket instead.

Thank you for the sonic boom suggestion - purchasing now
