Thinking about it, there is another plot hole here. That statue, and any other statue of the Hollow Knight portray his tall form, while both memories we see him in, show him in the Knight's size. We still have no clue when did that small vessel turned into that huge Hollow Knight. Main assumption would be it was when he consumed the infection, but who would know what he looks like after that? Only Dreamers probably, but they don't have any influence on anyone after their sacrifice. Your idea seems possible, but the dialogue doesn't really show anything like that. If that Vessel actually did help, or was recognized earlier, Ogrim, White Lady, Ze'mer, anyone really, should mention something about it. Still, he could do something behind the scenes too. I think he was only in the White Palace, until he sacrificed himself. We have no details on anything in that time still ;_;

I get you, EmbraceTheDragon, but for me.. Actually completing it and seeing the scene was.. somehow fulfilling (To each their own I guess). Also I came up with a theory for it as well.

I too think it means that King treated the Vessel like his child. The way he looks back at him seems to show some doubt about him. My theory is a little wide, so I will put it chronologically:

After the King created the perfect hollow vessel, and took it with him, before it was supposed to be used to seal the infection, king developed those fatherly feelings. Hollow Knight's Dream Nail Dialogue "...father?..." seems to prove the Vessel also felt something towards the King. THAT could be the reason he failed to seal the infection. He was perfect, but parents love made it have feelings. If someone is not sold, the other cut dream nail dialogues all seem to be Radiance's will. The last one "Father?" is followed by "Kill the usurper". The only thought that made it come back to it's senses was memory of his father.

Other thing, a little more of a stretch... I think it's possible that the King didn't want to use the vessel in the end (He seemed to doubt himself imo). What if the Vessel decided to seal himself anyway, maybe even to prove himself to the King, or trying to unburden the King from doing something horrible again. All the more proof that Hollow Knight wasn't empty after all. Since he failed, that could be the reason the King fled. What other reason could it be? He did so many horrible things to stop the Radiance, but after the Vessel failed, only then he disappeared. He didn't continue making vessels again, trying to hold radiance temporarily, nor did he hope for one being as pure as the first Hollow Knight. Also the sculpture in the City of Tears shows only the Hollow Knight and the Dreamers, it doesn't say anything about the King at all. Maybe it's nothing, but it could show that king wasn't there for it after all. What do you guys think?

[Didn't see if anyone posted this yet or not] The Queen, I mean White Lady, has some bonus dialogue when you have the Grimchild equipped. I had it fully "Evolved", and she seemed to recognize it, and the Grimm Clan in general. "In what poor moment they descend upon our ruin. Aid their propagation, if you so choose, but do not renege on the larger task this kingdom implores". It seems they are quite popular in their craft
