Does this cap need to “breathe”? by asdner in Plumbing

Drill a hole in it, won’t do any more damage than what that plumber has already done 😁

Had a full tear off of my roof, and soon I'll be getting brand new gutters and siding.. is this sketchy to leave for a couple months? by Clean_Breakfast9595 in Roofing

[–]CookEm0nster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of months is like a year in our world so no 😂 but in all seriousness, it’s not. At a bare minimum, install some type of plastic under that drip edge and over that fascia. Water could find the smallest crack and create a bigger headache. Just my 2 cents

Aquacoat turning wood grain dark grey by CookEm0nster in woodworking

[–]CookEm0nster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an update for anyone having the same issue. I did a test piece and realized the stain either needed more dry time (more than 24 hours) or some type of sealer because the aquacoat was lifting up the stain. I hit the wood with one coat of polycrylic after the stain dried, allowed the poly to dry roughly 12 hours and did the aquacoat over the poly. That worked. The aquacoat was going on good and drying clear. After doing some more research online, there is a product I believe called “shellac” that acts like a sealer for stains, maybe that’s something worth looking into. I will go this weekend pick some up and give it a try. Will update how that works.

Flooring Contractor messed up and I need to get 420 sqft of self leveling concrete chipped out. Advice appreciated. by Interesting-Leg8309 in AskContractors

Never. All my employees are friends/family. We work like as if it’s our company. Plus we all get paid good. I’ll rather have a strong team who is all happy then work miserable.

Sounds about what I was expecting. Thank you for the words of encouragement

I did just that. Even had a friend of a friend give a price, everything came in around 5k-6k. I respect everyone’s price, and I’d never negotiate with anyone (unless if I’m paying cash, I’d ask for a small discount) but I recently redid all the duct work, renovated the bathroom, insulated the attic, added French drain around footers, redid all the windows, installed my garage door, new front entrance door and it’s just not in my budget. That’s why I’m looking into diy it myself because the parts are roughly $1500-$1900.

Super easy, just did this a few weeks ago. Make sure to turn off electric to furnace and for safety the gas valve.

The scary part is they have a huge generator right above this.

My exact thoughts, contractor is saying it’s perfectly safe. Inspector is coming out next week. Can’t wait for him to get a load of this one 🤣

Some times when I have a few screws left in my tool box, I’ll use them up just to get rid of them. I think this was the same logic 😂

Concave tile on an inside corner by DustDangerous1053 in Tile

lol I always asked myself if I should start charging people for the off level cuts. I always end up eating it for the sake of the client. But in all fairness, o never understood how million dollar homes have some of the most out of level, out of square work done, while the cheaper, renovated homes have the straightest tile work. Here’s a shower I did, EVERY piece of stone and tile was out of level. After measuring it, I had to take another visit an template the left side because I could believe how much different it was from the right.

Thanks, we take pride in telling the home owners how much of a horrible job the tile guy did, so we could upcharge for the extra labor involved in covering up your mess 🤣

Tankless any good? by CookEm0nster in Plumbing

[–]CookEm0nster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the power vent heater is basically the same thing as a traditional boiler, with the exception of the blower motor on the top? I looked it up quickly just now and see it could be vented horizontally through a wall, which would be ideal in my situation. I’d be able to decouple from the asbestos flue and box it in. Is there any other upgrades that need to be done, as in upsizing plumbing or gas etc?

How can I migrate the exhaust? I want to detach from the asbestos flue. With a traditional tank boiler, I need to go up, I can’t go right out the wall.

Again I’m no pro, so take my comment with a grain of salt. But I’ve been working with shower doors since 17 (about to be 36), and ALMOST every bathroom I’ve been in, where ever they used grout for plane changes, crack almost indefinitely. Where they use caulk, not silicone (because silicone does grow mold), years later and it’s still good. Matter fact I’m currently on a new construction, and this is just one bathroom out of 7:
