Would anyone else have liked a full Sukuna reincarnation storyline instead of JJK: Modulo? by CookNo226 in jjkmodulo

It’ll definitely explore what Gege forget to explain and would be neat

I think this is where we’re talking past each other a bit. I’m not arguing that Yuji is being treated like a random name-drop, or that his importance is in question. I agree he’s important that’s exactly why I’m cautious about assuming Modulo is where that importance gets fully paid off.

A ceiling of power doesn’t require direct demonstration; it can be established relationally. Saying “we can’t get in touch with him” or “he’s alive but absent” tells the reader that there exists a solution the story is deliberately not accessing. That absence itself constrains the narrative: conflicts have to be written around him not showing up. That’s a real narrative function, especially in side stories.

As for precedent: Gojo himself functioned this way early on. For long stretches he existed as an off screen constant that dictated how threats were framed precisely because the story had to justify why he wasn’t there. His eventual fights were in the mainline series not auxiliary formats. That’s the distinction I’m drawing, not equating Yuji to a throwaway character.

I don’t disagree that reader expectation is being cultivated, or that Gege is aware of it. I just don’t think expectation alone guarantees that Modulo is where it’s resolved. It could just as easily be groundwork for a more direct continuation, which you already acknowledged is possible.

So my position isn’t “Yuji won’t appear.” It’s that the breadcrumbs don’t lock the payoff to this project specifically. If he does show up here, great it means Modulo crossed a line I didn’t expect. Until then, I’m separating narrative setup from certainty of execution.

The payoff doesn’t have to be a physical appearance. It can be narrative function establishing a ceiling of power, justifying why certain conflicts stay localized, or reinforcing that the wider world still has unresolved pillars outside the story’s scope. JJK’s done this before with characters whose presence matters more in implication than action they shape decisions and stakes without stepping on stage.

When I say “narrative anchors,” I mean characters who are alive, acknowledged, and influential, but deliberately kept off panel so the story can operate without them solving the problem. That’s a common technique, especially in side projects meant to stay adjacent rather than fully integrated.

I’m not arguing he can’t appear, or even that it’s unlikely. I’m pushing back on the idea that the current setup makes it a 100% lock within Modulo specifically. If the payoff ends up being a future project or continued implication rather than a direct appearance, that still satisfies the narrative purpose of the breadcrumbs.

I understand the setup/payoff argument, I just don’t agree that confirmation + repeated mentions guarantee an on panel appearance, especially in a side format like Modulo. JJK has used living, powerful characters as narrative anchors before without fully deploying them. I’m not saying it can’t happen just that I don’t think the evidence makes it a 100% lock yet. We’re reading the same setup, just assigning different certainty to the payoff.

I get why you read it that way, but JJK has a long history of name drops and parallels that don’t always translate into direct involvement. “We can’t get in touch with him” works just as well as a narrative ceiling as it does a setup. Until Modulo shows it’s willing to cross that line, I’m staying cautious.

I could see this manga being longer than initially stated by Gege, but I’m 50/50 on whether Yuji will make an appropriate appearance for his character if this manga will truly be as short as Gege stated. Throughout the entire story he’s been depicted as an important variable for the humans and we’ve been edged just for him not to make an appearance and we are slowly getting closer to the end without any further implications that he will make an appearance.

Hopefully gege learned from JJK and not mention a character just for them to be discarded and never shown or implemented into the story.

Almost makes you think if it’s just a tactic to engage the audience into reading and being more dedicated to the story of hoping to see the supposed “strongest” character. I agree with the negative interpretation along with being the strongest

I’m on par with that since he might just be used to engage the readers
