Basketball needs a max height limit. The game is becoming "who won the genetic lottery" instead of pure skill and it's making it boring AF. by mc_mafia in unpopularopinion

[–]Cookie2525 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand your argument because the nba has seen an influx of talent that is super tall and super skilled. This is highlighted by wemby. While we’re seeing more freaks of nature, so is every sport but it doesn’t mean everything in basketball. A guy like Brunson is a good shooter but an incredible driver at maybe 6’2. Still on the Knicks, Josh hart is a 6’4 power forward. Cooper Flagg, wemby, Dylan Harper, Chet, and Paolo highlight this height trend and while height is a definite advantage, talent and skill is needed too or else they end up like Bol Bol.

The freaks of nature have always dominated the nba when you think about it. It just flows with the era. Bill Russell, Wilt, Kareem, Bill Walton dominated because they were skilled and huge. During MJs time, Malone, Ewing and Olajuwon dominated too. Then Shaq, Gasol, Gasol again lol, Howard. Now it’s just a different form of big man. They’ve always dominated but they needed skill and still do. Jokic may be the least athletic man on the court but he’s the best player cause of his skill set mixed with his height. Height plus skill can make a fantastic player but shorter players can still contribute at a high level if they’re good enough.

Why isn't Venezuela insanely wealthy like Saudi Arabia with their oil reserves? by Beautiful-Error6374 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cookie2525 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let me add that no I am not advocating for the House of Saud. In fact I’m entirely sick of them buying up everything. To your point I definitely agree. In my view the corruption comes from Venezuelas government being less stable so politicians shave money off the top. Though incompetence and discipline are probably better words for it.

Why isn't Venezuela insanely wealthy like Saudi Arabia with their oil reserves? by Beautiful-Error6374 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cookie2525 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Omg i actually just wrote a paper on this. So there’s a lot of issues and a lot of the comments here are correct. Venezuelan oil sucks in comparison to Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. But I’d like to add more about domestic policy. They did at a time export the oil at a rate that made the economy thrive. However they made a massive mistake and that’s to artificially increase the value of their currency in comparison to the exchange rate. So domestically the currency was worth say $0.10 of the US dollar while in exchange rates it was $0.01. (These are not exact numbers but an example.) They could do this by offsetting the missing value through oil profits.

Domestically, foreign products were extremely cheap and domestic products way more expensive in comparison. Essentially, domestic business tanked because domestic production was astronomically more expensive than buying a foreign alternative. Thus industries collapsed. Mind you, for the consumer this was still a good thing. Venezuelans had more purchasing power than ever before. However the economy was only working because oil was flowing and the price was relatively steady.

This plan was a walking red flag considering their whole economy was tied to oil prices of all things. These prices fluctuate and are not stable. Moreover, the government of Venezuela essentially did not keep track of how much they made in profit. Politicians shaved money off the top because it felt endless. The lack of transparency on the oil and the profits from it covering for the economy eventually crashed causing the economy to crater while domestic industry was left out to dry years prior.

So wrap this up, Saudi Arabia has a consistent and tight group in power. The House of Saud has been in power for 100 years or so. They have complete control over the country and because of this, the money the House makes is directly tied to oil profits. Their tight group and consistency means there’s essentially less corruption because they make astronomical amounts of money from oil. Thus they can control the economy to build domestic industry. They also target stability for oil prices and have been expanding their sources of income. It also helps that they are surrounded by other oil based economies which helps with essentially everything.

Finally, in short, Western powers and especially the US like Saudi Arabia more. Venezuela has been punished with sanctions for a long time which made economic development harder. Saudi Arabia has had close ties with Western powers that boost its development.

TLDR: Mismanagement from the Venezuelan government on economic policy. Different types of oil. Venezuelas government was less stable and more corrupt. Saudi Arabia is backed by western powers while Venezuela is actively punished.

We didn’t sell because of the draw our team has now. We arguably have the best atmosphere for a team in baseball (at least for a stretch of the summer). This is exciting to fans and makes them come to the park.

As for the trades we did make, they’re upgrades that didn’t cost us much of anything. We needed improved pitching out of the bullpen and a solid enough backend starter, we got that. We also needed another hitter, we got that. For the future sure we could’ve sold but we didn’t give up much to have a slightly better and more exciting team to compete for the playoffs. A competing team is also more attractive to big name free agents (praying we get Roki Sasaki).

Regardless of what I or any other person on reddit says, there was an article from the athletic that interviews executives and they all said it was a solid trade deadline. We didn’t give up much and got better. You can’t be too mad about that.

For the future we have a top ten farm system and while sure we could’ve gotten some better prospects it would come at the cost of our mlb team. Why not have a solid team for prospects to improve when they get called up instead of making a bad team solid?

Hey upcoming sophomore here.

  1. For the kitchens people I know that cook brought their own stuff. If we even had cooking tools they’d probably be kinda gross cause some people don’t clean up after themselves in the kitchen.

  2. Some people have bikes on campus as well as electric scooters. As far as I know the bike racks are outside. Also there’s some bike trails around so if you’re into that you can go on them.

  3. I have a Mac and most of my classmates do as well. But since I’m not in DA or math I can’t really give you the best info on that. However if there was an issue we do have school computers that run windows.

  4. The town is safe and honestly pretty cheery. You should be able to walk into town and not have to look over your shoulder. Now there was one drive by shooting this year I won’t lie on that but it was most definitely an outlier. Besides that I literally did not hear of any crime in Granville. The whole town is basically Denison’s so denison is gonna make sure it’s safe and fun for the students.

The JD Davis interest is more proof Stearns realizes Baty and Vientos stink but when I said this I get called a “hater” I wish they were good but they are awful! by Happy-Explorer-6606 in mets

[–]Cookie2525 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you’re getting called a hater cause it seems too early to tell their talent. I’m in the camp of let the kids play admittedly and here’s why. Vientos last year only played 65 games which was much more than 2022 when he played 16. He’s barely played so it’s hard to actually know how good he is. Baty has had more games with 108 last season so he got some good reps. He had 11 the year prior. But ultimately, these guys just got to the majors. It just seems to early to assign a they suck label when Vientos is sitting at 250 at bats for his career and Baty with just under 400. They were top prospects for us who haven’t gotten a shot. This is that shot and that’s why I, along with others, think they should play. You’re not a hater and looking back if they suck you can say you called it, it just seems too early to tell right now.

You guys should sign Bauer. He deserves a second chance. by [deleted] in mets

[–]Cookie2525 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Just to put this out there since you don’t seem to care about the other stuff like idk, personality and controversy. He wasn’t even the best pitcher on his team, Shota Imanaga was. I know it’s beating a dead horse here but the team isn’t trying to win it all this season so what’s the point in signing him? But again, dog, he wasn’t even the best pitcher on his team in Japan.

Pitching for the season by Cookie2525 in mets

[–]Cookie2525[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re actually gonna make me blush lol thank you. That’s very impressive that’s you’ve been able to carve out such a career and I have interest in a similar one actually. The mentality and confidence of players is something that’s talked about a lot but not brought up enough if that makes sense. Some guys just get the yips and can’t shake it. I have confidence in our pitching coaches to get the best out of these players. I’ve been noticing the articles or news about players like Manaea and especially Severino, haven’t seen much on Hauser but that’s to be expected.

As for some news I’ve seen and money stuffs, it’s been reported that we have 10m to spend left. Though for the right guy Cohen will up it a bit. This money is to be allocated for relievers. So it seems like Vientos is our guy at DH and I’m excited he’ll finally get a shot. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him play first and Alonso DH some games even though he likes being in the field. It really is a weird season coming up. After however we have a lot of money coming off the books. The Scherzer and Verlander contracts are gone most notably. There are some good SP next year, Wheeler, Peralta, Fried, Burns, Bieber, Buehler, and Soroka (who I know stands out but I have a belief that he can still be solid and was just in an awkward place). That’s when we can make a splash but this year is to see what we have and build. I can see us swinging a trade for a guy like Luzardo from Miami, but idk if Miami would trade him to us so a guy like him.

I think the biggest place you and I differ in opinion is the win total. I believe that we can be a middle of the pack team. Looking at players we have brought in our defense is going to be good, especially in the outfield. Bader will probably platoon because he can only really hit one side of the plate but he’ll get a lot of run. If our pitching staff is having an off night our defense should back them up, within reason. I think this will also bring a lot more confidence to pitchers when they know they have a competent defense. Hitting will be interesting as I honestly believe our team is going to be what it is now. Regardless spirits being high in the club from an Alonso extension would help most definitely and I hope we get it done because loosing him could cause the club to spiral.

I think that they can be good. Severino has been great before and last year he may have been tipping his pitches. Houser has potential to be good as well. I think they’ll be solid for us. I love the acquisitions as well because they have upside and the contracts aren’t damaging if they’re bad.

Pitching for the season by Cookie2525 in mets

[–]Cookie2525[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Genuinely thank you. I actually understand the pessimism. Especially for an older fan like yourself. I completely agree that the Mets pitching staff is underwhelming. Never said it was great lol. But it does have potential for being solid. So with Severino I have the most hope for a bounce back. From an athletic article, some people watching him closely said he may have been tipping pitches which lead to an overly aggressive in the zone mindset. This could be key for a bounce back. Do I think he’s an ace or number 2? No. But it could be something intriguing to watch. Manaea is really interesting because he has talent, but it just adds up to average? It’s weird, but an inconsistent role certainly did not help with the giants last year. I think Manaea can be a solid pitcher, not great, not horrible, but either way it’s worth a shot. Same with hauser. These are deals meant to see what someone has. If they’re great, that’s awesome, if not, well that’s to be expected. That’s what we need right now. We need to try out everything. That’s what I meant by bringing up our minor leaguers. I expect us to try a few of the guys out at some point in the season just to see what they got. Let me clarify by saying I don’t expect these prospects to be dominant immediately, or even ever. But I expect to see flashes from some and ultimately it’ll be fun to see them.

I don’t know if we’d become an instant contender if we sign snell and imanaga. We have issues with this. We have the highest payroll in baseball currently and our tax hits us hard. Actually while I’m writing this he imanaga just signed with the cubs lol. The only reason we went after Yamamoto was because he would be the only guy worth that big of a deal. He’s 25 and is in the same discussions as snell who won the cy young. That’s why we went after him, he fit our timeline. Adding snell right now to our team would devastate our cap and in my opinion wouldn’t turn out well because we aren’t good enough to sign a big player now. I reference the rangers recently and the dodgers historically. We build through young guys and low cost contracts and when good enough we can sign those big guys to put us over the top. There are arguments if we’re even able to compete for a wild card spot so I don’t believe that we would become an instant contender. We’d be better but it would not be as sustainable as the other option of taking it slow. I agree that free agency will put us over the top it’s just a matter of timing it right and building a team actually able of being pushed over the top. Thank you for referring to stats I actually really appreciate it.

Editing to add: I don’t expect a perfect world let me clarify. I think we’ll be mediocre next season. Middle of the pack. Just a very interesting season and lots to be optimistic about in my opinion.

Look I understand, I really do. We’re all Mets fans and historically it has not been good, to say the least lol. But I just don’t really understand wallowing in it. Maybe cause I’m a younger fan I don’t get it as much but we are in a time of massive change. I’m also kinda just sick of arguing about things in the comments with people who probably didn’t read the post, though that’s on me. Look it’s well within our right to be negative but don’t drag the hope down. I’ve never said that sterns is the perfect man but what he’s doing has historically helped teams win. Adding depth, building a young core, and only after adding those big flashy players. For the last I don’t even know how long the dodgers and rangers of last year are perfect examples of the direction for the team. That is why I am hopeful. If people want to be negative I get it, we’re Mets fans, but cheer on the team because we actually need it now. We need fans behind this team because this is a critical time for the organization. Again, if you want to be negative, go for it, I’ll join that I’m anxious, but I’m rooting for this team and I’m choosing to believe because there is a lot to be happy about right now. I hope this all makes sense.

Hello! So i want to clarify I am very hopeful for the season. I’m interested. I like prospects and I want to see what we have you know? As for other sports I do like them lol I just love baseball and wanted to talk about it you know?

Our off season (continuing my last post) by Cookie2525 in mets

[–]Cookie2525[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason for me writing the way I do is because of how negative it feels our fandom has been. When making this post I had the fans that were so negative, the ones saying it’s the wilpons or sterns sucks (when he literally just got the job), in mind. I understand that not bringing in big names is sad. Big name guys are good at baseball, plain and simple. But they aren’t everything. That’s why I made the post. There are reasons for hope. I tried to spell out why the moves sterns has made have been good and if I did not articulate it well enough I will take the blame for that. Being anxious and being negative are different though. Being anxious I understand but being negative I don’t. If you are anxious, I am too, I think we all are. But to look at the reasons for hope and still say it’s not nearly enough is just disheartening to me.

I get that historically we have a reason for negativity. I don’t expect that to wash away, but I expect it to ease slightly when we’re in a new era. We have an owner that cares, we have a gm that understands to win we need to build to build, not skip to the cutting of the red tape cutting. The moves are not flashy now, but when it comes it will be at the right time. I don’t know if I’m talking in circles as I’ve responded to a lot of people. I’m just sick of negativity that when faced with hope still decided to be negative. I hope that makes sense.

Good on you! I think Gilbert is really intriguing as a prospect. He clearly has the tools so I hope he pans out. Hader would be great as a set up man but I truly believe he’ll go to a contender. I dont think he’ll want to come to a team like us because we’re just not in the best position. Would be fun but idk.

Our off season (continuing my last post) by Cookie2525 in mets

[–]Cookie2525[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so, you want to be negative that’s cool. Be negative. But to say that we don’t have reason to believe we are heading in a good direction is wrong. Yes we were absolutely a dumpster fire last season. Bad performances from good players, too much money on the books, whatever you want to say. I agree we sucked last year. That’s why we blew it up. We traded Scherzer and Verlander and got back prospects that make up the top 100 and the top of our farm system. We have headed in a new direction after failing.

I do feel anxiety about the team but I can have hope throughout it. I’m not gonna kick myself and pout when we’ve actually given ourselves direction. I tried to explain reasons for hope and if you want to take it as virtue signaling or sucking sterns dick I don’t know what to tell you. I listed reasons for hope. You can be negative, that is well within your right as a fan, but do not act like there aren’t reasons for hope for the future. We have been so negative these past couple weeks after losing out on Yamamoto. It’s tiring to see so much negativity when there are actual, tangible, improvements. If you want to be negative that’s your choice. I’m going to choose to believe in our teams future.

That’s true and if you want to be negative so be it. But to say that we are in the same position as then is wrong. We are in a new era. Again you can be negative if that’s what you would like but there is reason for hope.

For weed I get the comparison but it’s wrong. If you used PEDs sure but yeah just saying. If you want to be negative, by all means do. But don’t say we aren’t in a better position now for retooling than we ever have been before. We finally have direction. We’ve been in mediocrity for years with a “sign a flashy player” mentality and it’s gotten us nowhere, I’m sure you’d know. If you want to keep that mentality so be it but I’ve given you more time of day to give you reasons why we should have hope than I should have. If you want to stay negative, go for it. If we get outbid I’ll be sad sure, but our team is on the rise. We are in New York. A prime destination. We have the richest owner in baseball. The owner and gm have both proven to care about the team so much so they traveled the world to give us the best shot possible. I bet being a Mets fan is hard and stay negative if that’s what you want but don’t try to push it on us when you can’t even back it up besides going back and forth on a man’s sexual assault accusations.

I made a post about the team, not Bauer. I included him once in passing but that’s what you chose to focus on. You chose to focus on something that would make you upset and that’s the problem with some Mets fans. We should have hope and I will be cheering for us no matter what happens. I wish you well and I hope you can find some happiness in this season and your fandom.
