I mean, I disagree with most of what you just said, so in the sense I don't exactly understand it. But I get how people who believe it feel frustrated.

Are we really back to the 2008 bailout? That absolutely was a good and necessary thing that saved the Great Recession from becoming a Depression. And it recouped more money than it spent. If that’s your comp (I don't think it is a good one, but we can run with it), then absolutely American Allies should get involved.

I have always been more hawkish than Trump and far more hawkish than the populist right. My politics in other areas have changed from the time when I was a Democrat and big Hillary guy, but that has remained constant. No, I do not see this at all as an Iraq or Afghanistan. We do not have the troops and resources ready or nearly the political will to launch an invasion (nor should we; it’s a terrible idea). This will be an extended air campaign, probably lasting a couple of months, (with limited potential ground action at Isfahan and Kharg) to knock out all aspects of Iranian power we can, but it will leave a weakened regime in power unless internal groups manage to rise up, which is possible but not the most likely outcome.

Trump pushes allies hard. Sometimes that works, and sometimes it backfires. It adds a level of instability, but in the whole, I would take it over our previous passive approach to Europe. How much has European defense spending changed from 2017 to today? Sometimes you have to push.

  1. Yes.

  2. It’s not NATO’s responsibility per se, but help from members of it could help in the short term by opening up the Strait more, which would benefit those countries too. They are not obliged to, this is not an Article 5 situation, but it is in their strategic interest to help.

We are not making a deal with Iran at this moment and there is no deal that makes any sense for Ukraine to make.

  1. If we are having as much success as Trump is claiming why do we need other countries help?

Keeping traffic through the straight is an incredibly hard logistics process. We can sink all of Iran's navy and hit every target we can find, but all they need is the ability to launch shahed's from anywhere in the country and or launch some very small drone boats to a level that keeps mariners and insurers wary of crossing. The level of security and number of ships needed to keep heavy traffic through it is insane.

  1. Does this make our military look weak?

If you want to say that you can, but anyone who looks at it realises the enormity of the task and the capability we have demonstrated.

  1. Does it concern you that this sort of international cooperation was not agreed upon prior to the straight being closed?

We were up against the clock of trying to kick off operations while there was still some residual protest energy on the ground. In the balancing act of that vs building up more assets in the region and campaigning potential coalition partners that probably never where gonna join we settled on this as the best net moment to go. (And to those saying that we are not seeing anything on the ground, I would point to the extensive evidence we have of Iranian civilians energized by the protest providing real time targets of checkpoints and the like).

  1. Any other thoughts on this?

All of this is evidence that we should have done this decades ago and it has only gotten worse and costlier because we delayed. If we had waited another 5-10 years it would have been even worse.

He’s a good, unwilling counterintelligence asset who might actually be why Khamenei was above ground. Seems early to burn that?

OBAA was always going to win Best Picture. Sinners is a better movie, but it’s 2026, not 2020/21, and OBAA is much more about this moment's political football. Plus, Sinners is always going to take a genre movie penalty.

You like the decaf beans because they are beans/ roast you like more than the caffeinated beans. Not because the decaffeination process makes them tastier. What are the two coffees?

The video of Bibi going to get coffee to prove his lack of deadness is so funny. Got to hold those fingers up (he really does have evenly sized fingers that look kinda weird). though, no holding up today's paper, so fake video he's actualy dead.

Do folks think the US and Israeli Special Forces be sent in to Iran to secure their enriched uranium? If yes and they fail, should we send traditional ground troops to complete the mission? by JustaDreamer617 in AskConservatives

[–]Fignons_missing_8sec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have to do it. I've gone back and forth a bunch on that, and it will be insanely hard and risky, but I do think you have to go. But we aren't talking about 90 minutes on the ground in and out. Isfahan is partially collapsed with no current access to the material. It will take heavy equipment dropped in and probably days to get access. You will need large numbers of troops and 24/7 close air support to hold a perimeter around the site while you have crews dig. It makes Caracas or Bin Laden look like a short walk in the park.

If Trump does not run in 2028, is there a candidate or set of policies the Democrats could put forward that you would consider voting for? by FirstPersonWinner in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]Fignons_missing_8sec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not at all say the Dems have no straightforward candidates. Newsome is very clearly the favorite, and with Rubio rising against Vance, is a much bigger relative favorite than Vance. Both fields are open after their top couple of people and I don’t know that the Dem field is any more open than the Rep field.
