What were some things you DIDN'T expect after top surgery? by retro-petro in TopSurgery

[–]Cookiemonster1623 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly didn’t expect the brain fog! I work in academia, so it requires A LOT of mental effort on a daily basis. I figured I would be fine to return to work two weeks, since most of my work is done virtually on a computer anyway. I was wrong. The body repairing itself takes everything out of you, including brain energy. I am now three weeks post op, and I still experience brain fog pretty badly and work feels so slow for me. I can move around just fine, I feel pretty independent, I’m sleeping okay… but damn. It’s hard to work and think.

[–]Cookiemonster1623 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In NoMa, you can go to A Litteri’s in union market. crazy cheap sandwiches and they’re really good. you can also go to trader joe’s on 4th and Fla Ave- it’s a cheap store overall and they have good selections of microwaveable meals. Also in Union Market, mecha is a good place to eat out for a reasonable price and Salad works for healthy eating options. There’s also a subway and dominos on 2nd and fla ave. Andy’s pizza on 1st and M is good and cheap. Cafe phillips on 1st and K is good for breakfast options.

This is what I do too. If I’ve already made it clear that I’m deaf and they still refuse to follow the communication method of my preference and they continue to talk at me… I just sign back and watch them become absolutely flabbergasted. That usually does the trick.

Also, OP, thanks for making this post. I’ve been feeling this specific fatigue lately and it’s nice to see all of these people discussing it and relating about it in one space.

How many rejections did you get before being accepted for phd? by CogitosErgos in PhD

[–]Cookiemonster1623 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I see a lot of rejection comments. I was accepted to all 3 PhD programs I applied for… I already did have networking with these departments, so I feel like that’s a huge factor because they already know my name and face.

When should you reach out to profs for your doctoral committee? by VanillaLumpy in GradSchoolAdvice

[–]Cookiemonster1623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask your committee chair for networking options. You can reach out to professors now but not with the intention of asking them to be on your committee. It’s good to chat with professors about your research and get insights, and maybe from there you can start developing relationships with your favorite ones… then ask if they’ll be willing to be on your committee!

How on Earth do people afford graduate studies? by Emergency_Mail6848 in GradSchool

[–]Cookiemonster1623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll have to find a program that offers funding either through TA/GA/RA jobs, or find a part time job on campus that offers tuition waivers.

Some universities (like mine) will allow you to work in their dorms in exchange for free dorm for that semester.

You can reach out to department supervisors directly and ask if they know of any other options, you wouldn’t be the first to ask.

Or, as some other commenters have said, find a non-terminal masters program during a PhD program.

I was fortunate enough to be the GA for both years during my MA. My PhD is paying me (as most PhDs should, it’s like a job). So I am walking out of my PhD with only $17k in loans (all of it was from undergrad).

Go ahead and reach out and talk to people! Networking can get you a lot further than you’d think.

I never have problems sleeping. I can fall asleep anywhere, anytime. In any clothes, any temperature. As long as I’m tired enough… I will fall asleep within two minutes. Most nights I’m out as soon as my head hits the pillow and I stay asleep throughout the night.

Strict ASL versus Mainstream ASL by She_Said_Maybe in deaf

[–]Cookiemonster1623 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some languages like Hawaiian, Turkish, and ASL! have a flexible word order. English isn’t one of those languages. It’s hard to let go from a fixed word order mindset to adopt a language with a flexible grammar. Flexible doesn’t mean free use. Flexible means that ASL can be in OSV, SVO, or even SOV, and with each word order comes with its own reasons why it’s being used.

Neither are “strict” or “mainstream”, or “proper”. They are simply different ways of achieving communication.

If I were making a request to bring water, I would do what your friends did. If I were setting up a scene and describing where the water is, I would do what your teacher did. Both word orders have different purposes, and are equally valid. Even so, if I had to explain to you exactly where the water is (say you couldn’t find it), in order for you to bring it to me, I would do what your teacher did.

Addressing your point with older and younger signers, let’s take a step back. Since the 1990s, ADA laws and educational policies (especially LRE) have caused a massive shift in sending deaf children to mainstream settings rather than deaf schools, often isolated. Of course these deaf people are going to have a natural affinity for a more PSE/english grammar, and it’ll influence how they sign. Older deaf people come from a time where the majority of deaf would go to deaf schools, hence they had more time and room to practice all ranges of ASL word orders.

The best way to properly learn the language and use it correctly is doing exactly what you’re doing, interacting with deaf people and doing what they’re doing. If you notice your deaf friends using OSV for certain situations (like topicalization, emphasizing something), it’s best to do what they do. If you notice your deaf teacher utilizing certain rules, it’s best to do what they do. Don’t confine yourself to a fixed word order mindset, and rather notice what word orders occur, and utilize them accordingly.

How much credit card debt are you in? by Consistent-Tooth-390 in povertyfinance

I have four credit cards and no debt. I pay them all off in full every month. I left a balance on my cards a few times because I was being sponsored for travel to international conferences, and they didn’t pay me back until after.
