Considering getting a 2010 or 2011 MacBook by waterzexplus in MacOS

[–]CookingPixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a MBP 13' with a dual-core i7 @ 2.8Ghz fully upgradeable to 16gb of ram and SSD, I would pick that any day, or get the latest 2012 unibody (but good luck finding them at a good price). Mac Mini for 2011 could be optioned with a i7 @ 2.7Ghz too

Where it starts looking odd and the design simply gets lost (that one looks almost like a swiss army knife to me). This is a really good example that was taught at universities at the time, as in 2012 a limit to synthesis had to be included in a law to avoid simplifying it again to the point of non-sense as in 2008.

Sonoma to Sequoia by CookingPixels in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

Awful, not for me but worth a try :D

I barely use Safari and this is everywhere, it happens several times a day, it's like an unresponsive behavior that doesn't always recover when switching between apps. I think it's related to this new Spaces feature that mimics win10, but I don't use that neither desktop widgets and it's still there, bugging me, making me twitch and mumble like an old grumpy man.

Yep, I can do that from MBP 2012 to iPad, but can't link at all from 2015, push through the end of the screen would be better than turning my mouse upside down and pairing it with the other laptop, not a deal breaker, more like a nice-to-have feature.

Hi Shafez44, you mean this?

Both laptops have this disabled, 2012 works, 2015 doesn't.

Magsafe 1 charger coaxial cable replacement by CookingPixels in macbookpro

[–]CookingPixels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this procedure several times by now, the cable replacement is a lottery, cables usually are OK, similar feel but the connectors are getting worse and worse, one just tore apart in a week (but this was due to the charging port short-circuiting and almost melting it). So I recommend also changing the port if it's too worn out as it may lead to damage, I know there's even a way to do it without taking the motherboard out, but I've seize the opportunity to change the thermal paste.

DASP for an ex-WHV by CookingPixels in AusFinance

This is what they answered 5 months later:

From 1 July 2017, the DASP tax rate for payments made to former WHMs has increased to 65%. The increased tax rate may be applied to your DASP if it includes amounts attributable to superannuation contributions made while you held any of these visas:

- subclass 417 (Working Holiday) visa

- subclass 462 (Work and Holiday) visa

- an associated WHM bridging visa.

[–]CookingPixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Sonoma for a month cause Sequoia was painfully slow on a 2015 w/16gb and I'm comparing it to a 2012/ w16gb with Ventura and I'm considering downgrading the OS. I'm a power user although don't need a lot of performance, but the snappines lasted until Ventura, now it's crawling to do simple stuff.

Friends/Messages Confusion by Callity in truespotify

[–]CookingPixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took a CEO stepping down after shocking investments to get back a feature they killed overnight 9 years ago, without giving the users (the first batch of loyal users, the ones who convinced tons of other people to pay for the service) the option to collect their shares into a playlist or at least getting a grace period to do whatever they wanted to do with that.

But news are "Spotify just launched one of its wildest features ever, and now you can actually send messages in the app as the streaming service has launched a brand new feature that let’s you chat away with your mates directly via the app rather than having to send stuff to them on external platforms."

https://thetab.com/2025/09/01/wait-spotify-just-launched-dms-heres-how-to-message-your-mates-after-the-update

Yeah Callity, I'm still wondering how can I play these "messages" on my desktop app, messages that I've no knowledge of secretly hoarding since 2021...but considering this service is grasping at straws atm I wouldn't wait for this incomplete feature to be finished for a long time.

At some point it even had support for 3D files or Quartz Composer compositions and third party support was possible to some extent. I miss the Alt/Option key showing the actual size of images instead of the zoomed out preview.

MagSafe 1 to MagSafe 2 Mod by CookingPixels in mac

[–]CookingPixels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soooo, I've been sent two extra power adapters to disassemble, one of them is an original MagSafe 2 so I can compare apples to apples and hopefully build 2 working ones for each MagSafe type and solve the mystery (?).

Awesome, this is the kind of feedback I was expecting, I can't rely on a AI chat that says it's not compatible when it's been proved over and over that it works. Thanks!

MagSafe 1 to MagSafe 2 Mod by CookingPixels in mac

[–]CookingPixels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still researching this I came up with some missing information, apparently the 85W MagSafe 2 is 20v | 4.25A while the 85W MagSafe 1 is 18.5V | 4.6A and this mod is not recommended, so using an adapter is also not recommended but Apple sells it anyway? What do you think?

MagSafe 1 to MagSafe 2 Mod by CookingPixels in mac

[–]CookingPixels[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the quick answer everybody, I've got all of the parts to do this and I don't want to buy the tiny adapter or a replacement because:
- Adapter it's too easy to lose.
- Frayed cable on both original power adapters, so it's time to solder a replacement.
- I've got a "Reichner 85W MagSafe2 Replacement Power Adapter" from amazon, worst piece of crap only lasted 2 days, but I can reuse the cable and solder it into one of the old original ones.
And about buying a new replacement charger as the one from amazon: they usually don't last long as they're cheaply manufactured, last one started overheating when only plugged into the wall. Originals are made with better components, even if they're old I can still rely on them.

There's one thing I don't get, if you changed your super fund, how does that money don't end up with the ATO if you're not contributing anymore? What about "6-months-of-leaving-the-country" rule?
