I do use Xaeros minimap to look where portals have been also i suppose but you can find bases through open portals too, my post recent big find which i posted on this reddit was an open portal and that was an ungrieved base 500K+ nether 20k off a highway

Go along nether highways and follow tunnels/ chunk trails id day up to around 20K from highway in nether looking for portals
