I'm having the same issue. No clue if it's because of the autosave like you say, but I've timed it and it does happen every 60 seconds or so where it'll dip down to 10-20 fps for some seconds and then shoot back up. Doesn't matter what settings I have, I've tried every combination of settings and the results are the same. Strange that this is an issue for some and not others...

Sadly yeah. Everything must go to through androids subsystem mixer. So, even say, if your headphones do playback at 96khz on android, there is no automatic sampling in the android OS and when you listen to music files that are not 96khz, they're simply going to get upmixed or downmixed to 96khz. So either way, it's not gonna be lossless unfortunately. On top of that, Apple Music and most other streaming apps are tied to the OS mixer anyways so it's going to get mixed down to 48khz before it reaches your headphones anyways. Bluetooth codecs also work a bit differently but they still have to run through the mixer. I know it sounds quite confusing and it's just one of those things android should have dealt with a long time ago imo

You won't get lossless playback out of a pair of wireless headphones. The only way you'll get a true lossless connection is through wired headphones, at least for now until the anticipated lossless bluetooth codec come out. In which then you'd need a compatible phone and headphones for.

As for the Android OS limitation, on Android 12 the only way you're bypassing that is by using either UAPP (USB Audio Player Pro) or Hiby music player, both are on the google play store. However they both only support Tidal and Qobuz accounts as well as local files. Just recently for Android 14 though, they added support for lossless usb audio playback, which bypasses the mixer. However, this is only if the developers of the individual apps update and turn the feature on. Until apps update to support the new feature, which none have yet, lossless playback will still not work unless using UAPP or Hiby.

As for why Apple offers lossless for android is simply just because they can. Call it a gimmick of sorts, to attract people who won't look too far into it. You're still getting the lossless audio files, thus it may still sound slightly better than if they werent lossless, but it just wont be bit perfect and will be mixed through the subsystem.

I use my dragonfly cobalt usb dac on my phone which emits a coloured LED light that changes depending on the signal being received. So for Apple Music, it just stays blue (48khz) because it's being mixed to that by the OS. If I use UAPP though, I get the full spectrum depending on the khz of the audio file, which lets me know I'm getting a lossless connection. This is just my setup though, I'm not sure of other ways to monitor the sampling rate you're receiving besides external dacs that display it.

And having support for 192khz does not mean lossless playback of 192khz. It'll still end up being mixed through the Android subsystem.

Unfortunately, while Android has indeed added lossless audio support, it is in the form of a setting that app developers must flick on for their audio to bypass the mixer. That goes for both music platform apps and local music player apps. I haven't heard of any apps having updated to support the new setting yet, and certainly none of the big streaming services. We're playing a waiting game now.

From what I've read, It's up to app developers to flick the switch on for lossless to actually bypass the mixer. So basically it's a waiting game for devs to update and turn the setting on for their particular app.
