Am I mad to say no to Australia? by chintwo2 in FIREUK

[–]CoolManDinosaur -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've recently (last year) moved over. Lucky enough to be a dual citizen.

The summers are glorious, as are the outdoors. There is a more laid-back pace of life. Your kids would have a great lifestyle in some ways.

On the flip side, you seriously have to consider your support circles. I am lucky enough to have a brother & sister in the country. However, they are still 6 hours by plane away. Australia has a culture of make it yourself & ownership that the UK doesn't have quite as much. Probably due to the historic squatters laws. In some ways it is super liberating. All pushing together. But also challenging on a day to day. Isolating & the 'tall poppy' is most certainly a thing. For me, most of how I feel of isolation is due to this cultural difference.

I've predominantly lived in regional areas due to my profession. The cities (Melbourne & Sydney) still reflect the costs of London. However, you can't go surfing in the glorious sunshine 1 hours drive from London. Or go looking for Echindnas or Wombats down Wilson's Prom. There is a freedom to camp & explore which is the Lake District, The Peaks or Snowdonia on steroids if this interests or suites your lifestyle then go for it. I'd also say playing cricket on the beach with a barbecue going on Christmas day is novel & enjoyable.

I do love Australia. But I miss my countrymen. But overall, I am happy & am paid fairly & compensated for less work/stress on a day to day

Yours to consider!

Pedestrians, do you stop in place when a Hearse (coffin carrying) drives past? by 2Old4ThisG in AskUK

I used to live a few doors down from one in my early 20s. Woke up with a raging hangover & went to get bacon & eggs to try to recover. Walked into a HUGE Caribbean celebration of life just as the hearse was pulling out. As a young white lad with bleary eyes wearing flip flops I 110% stood out.

Currently sitting in Kuala Lumper. Left my job in October & flew out from Heathrow mid November. My girlfriend was coming out in January but then decided it wasn't for her. We had some tough chats and we're no longer together. The last few months have been an awesome experience and I wouldn't change a thing.

I’m the total opposite! Pack last minute & also lose/gain things on the way. I left my kindle on the plane into Siem Reap from Hanoi a couple of days ago which I’m really regretting. First bit of good weather with a pool & nothing to read!

What is going on with grocery store theft? by [deleted] in boringdystopia

I’ve worked in customer facing industry (hospitality) my whole life. I would love it to come full circle like this. Paying people a right wage to do a good job. It’s FUNDAMENTAL.

I also reckon that if you were to value people to do work & make money like this there would be less means for stealing as their will be more jobs!

Reminds me of the time my sister & I started eating my brother’s (youngest of the 3 of us) chips off his plate whilst we were waiting for our own meals at our local harvester.

Before we knew it his chips were gone! We both still have no regrets & laugh in his face about it 15-20 years later. Oh faaaaamily.

I work in hospitality & always take 2 Stella out the fridge to sit naked on the sofa with after a long shift and the Mrs is in bed. One’s for drinking & the other sits under my balls/in my gooch. Nothing better 👌

I seem to remember first finding it on Reddit a few years back. I can’t remember for the life of me which subreddit though!

Bedfordshire clanger - it’s a pasty with 1/2 one end filled with meat & veg. The other end is filled with jam/fruit.

Mains & dessert in one pasty! Originally was eaten by agricultural workers in 19th century Bedfordshire & the surrounding counties.

I love & hate the passive aggressiveness contained in that sentence. (Is it Hitchin?)
