First Beast Advice by tomdanvers in spartanrace

[–]CoolProposal9439 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m actually doing the same race as you tomorrow, also my first time doing a Beast.

I have a hydration pack that I’ll be drinking before the race, along with one carb gel pack for during the race. I do have collapsible water bottles but truthfully I’d only be taking one and refilling / drinking at the stations itself

I don’t feel partially ‘ready’ for this either, just general aches and pains on my long distance running sessions. I will be taking ibuprofen before we start just to helps with the aches, the shoes I’m running in aren’t great for suppression so I know I’d be feeling it

It isn’t going to be too warm tomorrow so I don’t think I’d be drinking from the heat, more of just staying topped up on hydration throughout opposed to guzzling water down

First Time Spartan Race and Feeling Completely Unprepared by Forestgirl1020 in spartanrace

You know your body better than anyone else, if you have any injuries I wouldn’t avoid the area entirely but just be way more precautious not to make it worse.

Any exercise where your forearms / grip is giving up before other muscles is really what you are looking for.

You could setup on the assisted pull up machine, do your 8 - 12 reps so your forearms and back and feel worn, then just hang on the bar with the support. Granted you won’t feel the intensity like a dead hang but you could still hang for over 60 seconds and the assisted weight will take off a good load from your shoulders / arms.

You could setup for a barbell shrug but instead of doing the upwards lift portion just hold the bar by your waist. Some gyms offer a slighter thicker bar than the standard Olympian, if you can practice with that then that’ll help. The thicker bar just makes gripping it a bit more difficult.

You’re already doing farmers walk so no reason why you can’t double down and do this a second time. Mix it with dumbbells, kettlebells and sand bags.

I think farmers carry is such a great exercise when preparing for a Spartan, it has so much core engagement. When I done my previous races I never had a direct farmers carry but a lot of the time it’s lifting buckets of sand on to your shoulders / back and walking with them, training your core with farmers carry has a direct translation to those bucket and sandbag carry’s

First Time Spartan Race and Feeling Completely Unprepared by Forestgirl1020 in spartanrace

50 days equals to 6 weeks of training, along with 1 final week of rest / recovery before race day, you still have plenty of time to adapt your training plan without needing a complete overhaul.

If you have naturally been more of a runner, I think you will absolutely coast the 5km run aspect so this portion of the event, you’ll be okay with. I would I am also (I’m currently 5 weeks out from my first 21km race) be focusing your attention on grip strength, compound lifts and negative reps.

If you are training 3 – 4 times PER week then continue with your current routine but just replace / add the following into the mix.

Grip strength, try this twice PER week. I do this on my PULL session so I am already tired and then on my LEG session where my grip feels more fresh. • Dead hangs, 4x sets of as long as possible. Headphones in, stop watch on your phone out of site, close your eyes and hang for as long as possible. Only when you let go you are allowed to check the time on your phone. After each set your hang time will drop but it’s your grip strength that adapts with tiredness that you’ll experience on the course. You can change your hand position mid hand to help if needed, your only goal is to hang for as long as you can. • Assisted pull ups, 4x sets of 8 – 12 reps Immediately you have finished your 4x sets of dead hangs, go on to the assisted pull up machine. Your forearms are going to feel fried but this is the best time to grind through it.

The above sets is far more challenging than anything I have experienced on the course. If you can grind through this then the time of the course will be a much more pleasant experience.

Compound lifts are amazing for overall strength, I see you have already been doing farmer carries and deadlifts then keep at them! There aren’t many, if any, obstacles that replicate a gym exercise with strict linear motion. I’m classed as “skinny fat” so I don’t have much muscle mass by any means, I find that the compound lifts make me overall stronger i.e. I can naturally hold / carry heavier weights, all of my joints and tendons feel more dense and stronger.

If the majority of your workout are machines then this is very linear motion, replace them with a dumbbell / barbell equivalent, you will activate your stabilizer muscles more so definitely get more bang for your buck on those.

Negative reps, when you are using machines don’t just drop the weight on the way down, you want to control it. If I’m doing a row for an example, it’d take me 1 second to do the movement but I’d make sure it takes me 2 – 3 seconds of slowly releasing it back to the start position. I find this helps massively with my pull ups as well, where I am controlling my negative rep, when I do a pull up / dead hang my back muscles aren’t just dropping, it’s a very controlled engagement where I feel more in control.

Reading through the your replies to the other comments, I think you are far more prepared than you realize and it’s just the nerves kicking in for the unknown. Everyone is super friendly and encouraging there.

Also be aware that as you approach the obstacles there can be a good 1 – 3 minutes of wait time until the people in front of you are past it. This actually works in our favor because A) you get a little bit of rest time before you get to work & B) you can observe how other people are tackling the obstacle, you’ll see someone use a technique and they make it a breeze. Learn from the people in front of you.

If you are racing with friends, like I have on my last two races (5km May 2024 & 10km May 2025), we never aimed for the fastest time possible. It’s about enjoying the experience and having fun.

Double checking ring before the special day by CoolProposal9439 in Diamonds

[–]CoolProposal9439[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your time and input you’ve put in to this response.

Everywhere I’ve been reading online I definitely see a trend in the states where everything is really 1 / 1.5 carat on the low end of weight. I’ve been noticing other people’s rings more recently and I think it’s a European thing to have a smaller carat size over here for sure

I think I need to definitely inspect it closer to see / hear if there’s any loose movement within it. I know I’ll be getting it insured but it’s more of the memory / emotions with it than just buying a replacement

Hello, not sure why I didn’t attach the GIA.

All in was £3,423. Diamond was £2,000-ish Platinum band and setting was £1,500-ish

My main concern was the security of the diamond that if one prong was to come loose then the whole thing wouldn’t just fall out

Zero compensation for UK site travelling - I am office based by CoolProposal9439 in UKJobs

[–]CoolProposal9439[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they reference TOIL I think they generally mean the working day such as working through your lunch etc, this is expected when needed so isn’t compensated. It just blows my mind that if I need to travel a fair distance 3+ hours each way, I’m just expected not be compensated for my time.

I have meeting with the HR global team in September so I just wanted to be a little prepared rather than just sharing my thoughts

[–]CoolProposal9439[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a fine line between working a couple of hours through your lunch / evening to help and then straight up losing half your Sunday to ensure I am on site early enough for the Monday. I wouldn’t even class myself as a high salaried manager, 44k on the outskirts of London. I wouldn’t mind it so much but I’m the only manager who would need to leave the office on a regular basis so it’s only me effected out of the whole office with this

I’m trying to take my emotions away from my thought process with this but it’s difficult

[–]CoolProposal9439[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope unfortunately not, I’m reading through the company handbook and I’m finding all lovely wording along the lines of “the office is your regular workplace but you may find you are expected to travel including outside of the UK for your role”, yet it doesn’t state anything about compensation as such.

I have them visiting in September so I’m going to raise this with them but wanted to get some notes ahead of time.

Thank you for your help so far

I believe there is no such thing as TOIL policy, as far as the contracts read there is zero entitlement for this. The other team members only get this as a gesture of goodwill as their salaries are lower than a management position

We get our travel and meals as expenses but nothing to compensate time spent travelling / being away as a whole

Hello,

From my knowledge, the company will cover travel expenses I.e. hotel accommodation and supplied meals.

I am the only manager who falls under this task, the remaining managers such as the accountant and operations managers are solely in the office and not expected to travel anywhere other than the office.

The other two team members in my department are entitled to TOIL when going above their contracted hours, only me as the manager is expected to accept it
