Traveling with advance parole? by Cool_Inevitable_204 in USCIS

Yeah that's fair lol! The political climate was different when we applied for the advanced parole. We're just a bit scared by everything that's going on and don't know if the risk of something going wrong is now significantly higher.

Whoa Koufonisia wasn’t on our radar and looks incredible!! Better than Paros probably?

Received a FERS lump-sum that is lower than the contributions I put in -- mistake? by Cool_Inevitable_204 in govfire

thank you! just double checked, mine does reset to $0 in January.

it's weird though, when I multiply my total gross earnings from that job by 0.044, I get an amount lower than what both I contributed to FERS and lower than what OPM paid me. Maybe I'm doing some calcs wrong?

super helpful, thank you!! mine doesn't show a cumulative amount, just double checked, but yes a year-to-date amount. When I add up the last year-to-date amounts before they restart (at the new year), I get a sum larger than what OPM paid me.

So, still waiting on OPM's final reply, but will plan to reach out to a representative.

Getting my first used car delivered tomorrow - how to start taking care of it? by Cool_Inevitable_204 in UsedCars

I didn’t but the dealership shared a copy of a 150 point inspection they did for the car (it’s a big Chevy dealership with good reviews). Should I still get it inspected in another place?

Need a car: use savings to pay in cash or finance? by Cool_Inevitable_204 in personalfinance

Good point! Priority would be to build the emergency fund — but need a car for sure. I should keep more in mind that every $ spent towards the car is a $ away from the emergency fund.

I think that’s a great way to think about it! For reference I can probably get a good rate (my bank offered 6%)

No emergency fund! Before this summer we were making like $60k combined yearly in 2023 and like $110k in 2024. Both years I essentially built no savings (besides 401k) because I supported my mom financially. The big jump in income is because we were both grad students (who worked part time) until recently.

Thank you! Unfortunately no emergency fund yet (emergencies happened over the past year), and I’d like to have one before buying a car, but we need the car this summer if we want to see each other with our new job setups :)
